DOOM has a long and storied history. Despite having only a handful of games, the series has come a long way. We're here to tell you all about it. Subscribe for more: / gameranxtv
@VinnyRulesGaming If you already knew that, then why did you read that comment? Oh, you didn't know it would say that? Yeah, that's why we tell each other things. It may not be original to you, but it could be a first for someone else.
Michael Breland I used to play the old doom when I was a kid. Now that I’ve played almost every game (and now waiting for doom eternal), it almost becomes familiar to me, because of how used to it I am. Like I could just say hi to the Doomguy like a close friend 🤣🤣
The original Doom (pre windows 95) only required 4 MB of RAM. It was Doom 2 that required 8MB. Been playing Doom since 1994. I still have the original shareware on a 3.5 inch floppy disk.
E1M1 will always be my favorite doom level. It's cliche, I know. But just being dropped in with no context, gun visible on screen, doomguy looking back at ya like "come on, we don't have time to waste." and then the fast tempo heavy metal music and the gloomy atmosphere, you didn't need a tutorial. You didn't need anyone to tell you what to do. Combine that with opening the door at the other side of the room and hearing the guttural yell of the pistol dudes opposite you... you know what to do there, and you know you're gonna absolutely obliterate them. It's perfect. The best intro to a game. Simple. Pure. Action.
@@colorron8 unlike most modern shooters, at the very least. That's just how old shooters were. Wolf3D, Quake, Heretic, Hexen, Blood, etc. all just dropped you in there and had you run rampant.
The new Doom is an absolute masterpiece.. While the Snap isn't exactly at the same level as halo 5's forge and the multiplayer is quite misguided and poorly designed, the single player is MORE that worth the price.. It has been so damn long since I enjoyed a single player campaign quite as much as I enjoyed DooM's
It's kind of shocking how similar Halo 5's multiplayer plays to the original Doom's multiplayer compared to Doom 4. :/ Oh, well. Campaign and SnapMap are awesome.
Checkmarks and arrows hike your analytics score. The more edgy it is the more often its seen. Facts. This was actually in one of RU-vid's most recent webnairs for creators.
Can we all agree that Doom is the best pure First Person Shooter (no sniping/no survival-far crying) to date?!? It's so much fun and instead of enemies that hit you anyway even if only one pixel of you is shown, as in call of duty's veteran mode, it's challenging, but not boringly unfair. I hated all that camping your way through any lever. you were always like: where did that came from and you died as soon as you walked around a new corner. Sure finally I finished Call of Duty's (several games) hardest mode, but it wasn't fun. There need to be more games like doom, maybe other story, less demons, more beautiful landscapes than mars, but just as gory:D
Yeah... unfortunately fast paced first person shooters are a dying breed now. Aside from certain indie games like Dusk or Devil Daggers, I can't think of any more games like Doom. Only if Epic made Painkiller 2 instead of Bulletstorm.
I think DOOM 2016 has the best FPS mechanics of any game to date, but I still prefer games like Half Life 2 and the first two Halos as an overall package.
Well, I think you can get away with murdering demons in the worst way possible but I'm not sure including a heaven in that wouldn't fly. Problem is that you cant really have a specific heaven be the good guys because that would piss a lot of people off but if you made heaven the bad guys too that would piss people off too. Its hard to think about Doom and political correctness but they do have to follow the "rules" to an extent if they want to make money.
they could do that hell is just the place for really weak fallen angels and the real badasses are in heaven like the angels in that one movie where the angels possess people and are really fucking scary.
+Potasty Who said anything about them being the good guys? They could be crazy or something? Or just a bunch of dicks and try to wipe out humanity for interfering with demons
Flickalys ikr. It's so bloody hard! All those damn jumps....platforming is not my strong suit but it's fun...and even on the I'm Too Young To Die mode, the enemies still kick your ass
thats how it goes for every single video. they want you to comment on their vids and hopefully start a discussion with people. the more comments the more the youtube algorithm sees this video as being worthy enough to be shown to people in their recommended feed. it's annoying that they say that and never talk, but they're a company now. they don't really have time to reply to every comment.
Gameranx you guys have come a really long way, been with you since 90k and im really happy to see you guys at 2.6 *MILLION* subscribers, you know how many humans that is?
Very insightful and interesting to see how DOOM evolved over the years. For me, Nothing beats Doom 1, Doom 2, and Final Doom on the PC. I still play those to this day.
Yes it's 'true' so I had to clik t-up on the OP. :) Dammit after watching the vid I almost consider getting an emu (the kind without feathers) and try it again.
My favorite level is probably level 30 (the icon of sin) from Doom 2, it's kinda simple, but it spooked me as a kid, and for the engine this was a pretty creative way to create a boss fight that's kind of engaging, instead of another big ass bullet sponge with aimbot.
My favourite level is/was E1M3. I remember being a kid and trying to make 100% secrets in it. This was way before internet and walk-throughs. You had to discover stuff by yourself. I was so determined to find them that I pressed the space bar on every damn piece of wall. When I finally discovered the last secret and it led to a secret exit level, for a totally new and secret level I was completely overwhelmed. I didn't even know the game had secret levels! It felt better than finishing the game.
I love the beginning of the new doom. Where you find out about the corporate greed of the humans. And you always feel so badass when you punch the lights out of that computer screen
Watch Digital Foundry's channel on their Retro series. They even talk about the lesser known arcade cabinet of Half-Life 2 tht was released in the East.
Picked up Doom 2016 during a sale on steam earlier this year and am just now getting into it. It is such a good game. I haven't had this much fun with a single player campaign in a LONG time.
While it seems to be listed as such on several sites online, the minimum RAM requirement for the original Doom was not 8MB. It looks like it was 4MB. Systems with 8MB were pretty rare in 1993, 4MB was probably the most common amount of RAM being shipped with new PCs at the time. I am certain I was playing Doom on 386 and 486 systems that had 4MB of RAM at the time. It looks like id software started recommending 8MB of RAM at some point but that was not the minimum.
It would be more like a de-evolution, considering how the graphics have gotten better, but the actual game mechanics have gotten more palatable to dribbling cas-- I mean er... "streamlined."
no you cant, because new game contains every single aspect of the old and then some. what Poet is talking about is slow degradation of the depth of the system in ES games that made every game after Morrowind total snoozefest - for example becoming imperial champion in the arena at the level of whopping 4 was the first time i ever facepalmed because of ES game ...
My favorite level was in doom 2, I don't remember what it was called but it basically involves you pressing a button in a tiny room, the walls lower, revealing an arena with a crap ton of mancubuses, you kill them, then the walls around that arena lower and there are a ton of arachnatrons... and yes, I know I spelled both of those horribly.
Love the vid, but nothing beats Ahoy's version, cuz its far more comprehensive as its almost an hour long. Tbh nothing beats Ahoy when it comes to gaming history and production quality
you cant compare this with ahoy , ahoy video is for people want to know deep about the game , this vid is for people that just want a brief history of doom , but yeah ahoy video is awesome.
I'm new to the series and I'm 19. Just started playing Doom 2016 2 days ago and I'm having a major blast and I haven't felt this kind of excitement while playing a campaign of a fps game since Modern Warfare 2.
My favorite part of ALL the Doom games was the bosses they brought out in the newest game. IDK WHAT IT WAS but the strafing/quake style/platforming against demon bosses just felt SO DAMN RIGHT! Just wished they made them a little harder. Even on Nightmare, Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind are still pretty damn easy.
You say 8 MB is little, but in fact was a lot in those times. 8 MB was not usual, at least for home PCs. Even servers ran with 4 or maybe 8 MB, only very powerfull ones had 16 MB. In fact people bought memory just to play Doom. (Btw, it runs fine with 4 MB already.)
hands down e1m2 is my favorite map in the game, it has multiple large secrets, some of the most interesting architecture, and a unique mix of dark labyrinths and bright well-lit areas. Everything I love about levels in the first doom is right there in that one level.
I tried this game in 2018, because I have a MAC. I grew up playing the original doom on my moms old IBM machine, and even without a soundcard and only the shareware version, it was fun enough that tears of unfathomable joy streamed down my 10 year old face. I was´nt thrilled with the Doom 3, and so I suspected this would be more of the same. I was wrong. I could not believe how faithful this game was to the original gameplay. I thought it was´nt possible, I thought that old feeling could never be recreated, I thought it was my own stupid nostalgia. YOUR GAME IS AMAZING, I LOVE IT. THANK YOU ID SOFTWARE. I LOVE YOU
Plutonia Experiment's Map 11: Hunted. From the deceivingly cheerful and asinine music to sixty of the most terrifying monsters in the game jumping out from behind a corner and laughing creepily, hunting you down in a confusing maze; it's one of the best maps in all of Doom.
The titan realm is my favorite cause of the backstory, not to mention the ending being so satisfying, but I'm excited for doom eternal rn it looks even more robobust
+theblindkittysheriff 637 It comes with an expansion on XBox, that's not an episode. It's formatted similarly to how the episodes were formatted in the original Doom, but they're not episodes. One is the regular game, the other is the expansion.
I just rediscovered my love for DOOM with the reboot and I love it just as much now as I did the original game. Though I haven't finished the campaign yet, I think my favorite level or mission has to be the third one, The Foundry, followed by the 5th level, Argent Tower, which I don't know if I'll be able to clear....seems I have trouble with double-jumping. Anyway....this is an amazing game and I don't think anything other games coming after it by others companies will be able to match it.
"Halls of the Damned" is my favorite level, for both the music and level aesthetic... Fantastic video, but I'm a liiiiiitle disappointed that Chex Quest wasn't mentioned at all... I also really hope "Doomguy" makes it into Super Smash Bros Ultimate as a DLC.
I don’t know if it’s my favorite level... but rather the level that elicited the biggest emotional response from me. Doom 2. Map 27 (I think). “Monster Condo”. I will never forget that first time walking into the room with all of the bodies hanging from the ceiling. As a kid, it absolutely terrified me. To this day, I still get uneasy when I play it and I’m 35.
War will never stop as long as there is sentient life, due to a universe of infinite possiblilty people will have different opinions resulting in conflict. And yes you just heard that from fucking shrek.
This was the most 'complete' videogame of that year. And a perfect video game.... No challenge. It earned the perfection medal from the halo series' multiplayer with its "story". How the f$&k do you do that?!
Can you talk about the rally points in games, Rally point is a dynamic spawn point placed by a squad leader and a great mechanic of keeping teamwork among squads. The best example of rally points is a game mod called Darkest Hour 44-45, you can place 2 rally points every 100m. Other games are Squad or Project Reality that also have it.
