Because it is good. Most people know good is objective but refuse to say comes from a higher plane. I dislike people who believe in something that can't be effectively proven. It's sexist, extremely violent, supporting of slavery, supporting of unwanted abortions, and makes no sense on top of that. All of these scriptures are lauded as God's teachings. (2 Timothy 3:16-17 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.) Good work my ass. Killing helpless babies, elders, and everything in between is good work? Telling women not to speak in church is good work? Richard Dawkins said that there may not be a thing called evil. But he did say deny people's right for free speech. Because a true atheist has to acknowledge there is no standard morality or ethics based solely on one person's or one society's ideology. Therefore no true wrong means no true right either. An atheist can not say rape, murder, robbing, and ect is wrong. Western society is based on the Judea-christian value system. Nice argument by Friel. We can know a lot about where we came from by looking at ourselves... namely that we are conscious, creative, and that love is the most important thing. Love is the most important thing to the origin of our existence. The story of Christ is one of the ultimate love... one of self sacrifice... "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:13) "We love him, because he first loved us." (1 John 4:19)

Very good, One thing I remember as being a clear aspect that shows our evolution to our current form is Broca's Area. We can't know much about the structure of pre-hominid brains as there are of course no examples. But Broca's area can be seen as it is on the outside of the brain against the skull. A cast made of the space inside a fossil skull shows the outer structure of the brain and how Broca's area is more developed the further you go on the evolutionary line. Science is cool.
Interesting, he's absolutely right. Without god(s) that set the standards it's basically about preference, no matter how you flip it it's about preference since nothing else really matters. That's why morals derive from religions, because they set a line no matter what.

I can confirm Joestfrancois' statement. I took some classes on evolutionary anthropology in college. I'm not claiming to be an expert in the field, but his sentiment is mainstream among educated professionals. We are, indeed, apes and evolved within complex social groups. Much of this is known through the excavation of hominid remains and artifacts as well as studies of our current species.

As the philosopher David Hume once pointed out, you cannot get an "ought" from an "is". There is no way to generate morality from biology. Gene Roddenberry wrote once that "Those who would subject themselves to the rule of logic will learn a hard lesson: logic doesn't care." There is no way to generate kindness from fairness. There is no way to get compassion from mere consciousness. It is not possible to explain morality without transcendence or using some kind of logical fallacy.

Modern humans seem to have appeared about 50,000 years ago. So we can study changes within our own species to see how we are evolving.

Bad/immoral: Diminishes well-being, happiness, or health or causing unnecessary harm/suffering. While the definitions are not factual (because they're simply definitions) all happiness, suffering, sadness, and health are all REAL even measurable things. They're subjective experiences, but they're OBJECTIVELY happening. Why is this such a complicated thing to so many?
No. facts are not assumptions. The labeling of "fact" often relies of assumption however that the person presenting the fact is not lying to me or what-not. "Fact" is a label for a type of information.
