Executive function skills refer to the mental skills we use to pay attention, to organize and plan tasks and materials, to start tasks and stay focused on them, to manage emotions and be flexible, and to keep track of what we are doing. Young children rely on these skills to follow a sequence of instructions for daily tasks while older children need these skills to “break a task down” into a sequence of steps and organize a timeline as the demands for independent learning increases. These skills can impact students at home, school and in social situations.
Parents and professionals will gain a thorough understanding of executive function skills in this practical strategies seminar. More importantly, though, they will leave with practical techniques that are simple to use yet highly effective in enhancing executive function.
Prospective Memory (PM), or the ability to remember to complete tasks in the future, is often a struggle for students who have had stroke or brain injury. It's a really important skill that plays a significant role in success across various aspects of life, including social, academic, and personal settings. Unfortunately, PM deficits are quite common after stroke or brain injury, regardless of the severity of the injury.
Sarah Ward, M.S., CCC/SLP has over 25 years of experience in the treatment of executive dysfunction. She is a former past president of the Massachusetts Brain Injury Association and the wife of a survivor of TBI. She has presented to over 1800 public and private schools and organizations worldwide. In recognition of their global influence in the field of executive function Sarah and Kristen Jacobsen were named one of the Top 10 Professional Development Providers for 2023 by Education Technology Insights Magazine.
