i really think it would shock most english speaking people to know that saint basil's is 462 years old. i remember reading about it not that long ago and knowing that it's very old and still being kind of dumbfounded when i just looked up again exactly how old it is. it's immaculate.

0:40 The word “red” can mean not only color and not only “beautiful”. In texts, the first line of a paragraph is called red (“start with the red line”). Also in texts, when some thought or idea is expressed many times, they say about it that it runs through the text like a red thread. “Red Porch” is the main, front, royal entrance to the building. In homes, the "red corner" is the corner of the room opposite the front door, in which icons were placed. Honored guests were seated there, under the icons, during feasts. That is, in this context, “red” is “honorable.” This point, I believe, is especially important on this channel.

St. Basil's Cathedral, officially the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, on the Moat (also Pokrovsky Cathedral, Cathedral of the Intercession on the Moat) is an Orthodox church on Red Square in Moscow, a monument of Russian architecture. Built in 1555-1561
@alsm974

Saint Basil Cathedral named after local fool for Christ, homeless beggar, who used to walk naked, only in chains around Moscow. St Basil Cathedral was built by Ivan the Dread, who were acquainted with old Basil and used to talk to him. Ivan ordered to bury him inside the Cathedral after his death in 1552. In 1588 Basil became saint of Russian Orthodox church.

@RussiaAmericanDream 6 месяцев назад
Absolutely. Most history in America is fake history because our history only goes back a little over 200 years, so we have to borrow from other cultures and throw up controlled-perspective structures to simulate history. This is real history.

St. Basil's is actually free to film in because it's a museum. I did grab some footage inside, but it felt wrong to post it. The two monasteries we have visited so far have no camera/no phone signs up. The churches don't seem to have those signs, but I'll be asking permission once we get set up well enough that we can start filming more.

Actual architectural idea of the St. Basil were to build a Heaven City of Jerusalem, mimicing various houses and towers around King Solomon's Temple (in the medieval times they think ots vere like a tent (Шкина или Скиния), not rectangle like archeological evidence showed now). So even at Rafael painting it will be round. So, St. Basil would used as 'decoration' during very popular back in 16 and 17th centuries celebration - a week before Easter - Entering of Christ to Jerusalem in the age of seven. So, Russian Tsar would show Josef and Patriarch a young christ sitting on the horse (a donkey in the Bible). We don't have palm trees there (except for Botanical Garden), so instead of palm tree leaf people carry the first spring blossoming tree верба. Most of cathedral decoration (actually it were 9 churches, and St. Basil part and one another added later) designed to show eternal beauty of Jerusalem. P.S. In XVII century too patriarch Nikon founded another beautiful place - The New Jerusalem, notth-west of Moscow, mimicking a Holy Sepulchre temple and its worrth visiting too.

5:20 when i see this i remember the fate of the architect. The king asked, "Can you build a curch even more beautiful than this one?" The architect replied that if His Majesty orders, then perhaps he can try. Then the king ordered the architect to be blinded so that no one else would have such beauty. 6:29 it said something i couldnt read(i'm russian, but icons uses old slavic language, or curch slavic as it called ) it said "св б говер"(i have no clue..doesn't sound like anything ) КНАЗЬ (Князь- prince or king) Алезандръ(Александр, Alexander) Невск(Nevsk) i thing the lettering was differert in old slavic language but it deffenetly said the prince Alexander Nevsky(maybe the saint prince alexander nevsky... i'm not that good with old slavic... just as far as it similar to russian)

@Scorp_2 7 месяцев назад
@irinaKorovina
@irinaKorovina 7 месяцев назад

Ask question. If Bolsheviks were so bad why all of that things are exists today? Don't you know that Stalin almost finished church seminary. He was on the last 5th year when he was sent first time to Siberia. You can compare Stalin, Lenin, Dzerzhinsky with Luther in Europe. Devout people who have become disillusioned with their faith.

Majority of churches and cathedrals were destroyed by communists, and their riches looted. Very few historically and architecturally significant cathedrals were left and preserved, but not used as churches, only as museums. After perestroika, when communists were gone, there was an amazing and very unexpected (to me) resurrection of religious faith, money were collected by regular people and old churches restored, and new were built.

You are in denial or you are lying if you are rejecting the fact that the Bolsheviks were against the church, many of the churches were destroyed, most turned into anti-religious museums. Priests were slaughtered until Stalin put a stop to it during the 1940s. And even by 1990 the amount of Christians was below 30%. It was never illegal, people were allowed to be baptized like you said or attend church if they really wanted to. Comparison to Luther is ridiculous as well. Luther was never anti-Christian as the three you mentioned were. I am glad in retrospect that the church was not banned entirely, but don’t play as like they were friends.
