I moved to Russia 21 years ago. I had a distinct advantage over most Americans who moved to Russia. I learned Russian during my military/government career. I spent 62 weeks at the Defense Language Institute and learned Russian. I had to move back to the USA after 21 years because of a family crisis. However, I'm now back in Russia and love it. When I retired I did many road-trips in Europe just to visit as many countries as possible and tick them off my list. Russia was going to be yet another country in 2019. How wrong I was. It changed my life. It was like coming home. I would move there like a shot if it were possible. I'm hoping to visit again this autumn (2024).

My friend from the USA moved to Russia a few years ago and got married a year after moving) now he has a child, we often travel to Altai with our families. The funny thing is that his relatives are afraid to come to visit Russia, believing that it is very dangerous in Russia, crime, lack of food in stores...and they don't even want to listen to any arguments.

Decades ago, I served in U.S. Military; did so to honor my grandfather and his serving in Great Patriotic War (WW 2); I worked on aircraft electronic systems during first Gulf War. I once believed in what America use to be/stand for. America of my youth is dead and gone; exists only in memory, and what America has become now is embarrassment. If America called for me to rejoin military, I would deny; I do not serve tyrants! Am considered "radical" because I have point of view that goes against popular image government attempts to promote: America has become what Russia once was, and Russia has become what America once was. Russia is now land of free, if all the information that I have quietly acquired is true. Am tired of racism, of ANY kind, but most especially that directed toward white people; I am white, but I practice policy of "live and let live". I will treat people as they treat me; treat me with respect and I will gladly and happily do so with you. Lost all of my family here in the states; I am last living member. Only reason I stayed in U.S. after time in service was because I made promise to myself the day father died that when mother's time came, I would be there to say goodbye. Now am looking to leave America. Am well educated; just finished up Bachelors' Degree in Business Management with Major in Entrepreneurship. Am artist. Have won contests as youth and have even sold/created few works for private citizens; I draw (in various different mediums), paint, sculpt, play music and sing. Am quiet person that only wishes to live in peace. Of course, would be nice to meet Russian woman that could see the me inside; the shallow, self-centered and superficial people that western women have become do NOT appeal to me. I believe in traditional family values. The corruption of these values in order to promote Corporate America is one of reasons why America has failed. Family was, is and will always be center of my universe. With this, to my mind, would be able to settle in new place and have TRUE home! Am in bad health here. They do not seek to promote wellness here (unless they can make money from you, like with doctors constantly giving you new pills to take so that pharmacological companies can expand profit margins). Know most food here in America is not good for you. I am not young(er) man; I am 54. But I am intelligent, well-spoken, hard-working, creative and good-natured. I do not seek confrontation, but will stand up for self and what I believe in. I appreciate natural beauty, especially in music and people. I also have nature of curiosity with strong desire to learn. Exploring places and learning of cultures is like food and drink to me! I learn languages easily (began learning Russian through books, and by listening to Russian people; I read and write Russian now more easily than speak it, as I do not have people around now to help me train ears to understand it as spoken). Can I say that I love Russia? Quite possible. Would it be definite YES? Treat me with dignity, respect and kindness and answer would be definite YES! Show me these basic human needs and I would gladly fight to defend friends, family and loved ones!

I was in San Jose for 6 months for work in 2017. And it was terrible. My car was robbed in a store parking lot, I met drug addicts, I heard shootings, I saw LGBT people. And much more. It was HELL. All buildings are very old. There are no new buildings at all. The service sector is not developed. The food is disgusting. There are no banking applications. I managed to save only 15% of my salary. I love Americans, most of them are decent people. My employer offered me to move to America, but I refused. Traditional values ​​are very important to me. I have a daughter growing up, whom I will give the best education in the Russian Federation. I can't do this in America.

What you say about crime (petty crime) in Russia is 100% true. It shocked me that people can leave handbags in cars, laptops on tables, and bikes unlocked and have absolute confidence that they are still there when they come back. I think it took me a few months to finally relax when it came to personal belongings as I was used to having to guard these with my life back in my home country.

Welcome to Russia. I am Russian from Moscow who has been living in Norway for the last 8 years. I took for granted all the advantages of Russia you mentioned before I moved to Norway. I’d like to add one more advantage to what you said. This is that people walk by foot a lot which let them stay in shape. I always loose weight when I am in home country, partly because of great fresh food, partly because of at least 10 thousands steps I walk a day.

People were queuing up even before the stores opened in order to have time to buy groceries, which often ran out. Today it is hard for young Russians to believe how difficult times my generation has gone through, high unemployment and crime, the war in the North Caucasus, mass closures of enterprises across the country under the rule of the incompetent and sick President Yeltsin. I visited Moscow 10 years ago and hated it. I was booked for 5 nights, but left after 1. Everyone else who's been there that I know loved it and told me I was just in the wrong place. A year later I went to St. Petersburg and LOVED it. It was gorgeous, clean, friendly, safe, and an absolute joy to walk around in. I'd love to go back to Moscow to give it a second chance.

Very good overall description. With a few minor corrections ought to be added. There are only two genders but whichever you are, it is perfectly fine to pursue the gender you are attracted to. For example a man who is attracted to men can have a full life with a male partner but they are still males who are attracted to other males. It is not illegal and it common with tv variety show stars and athletes, no one shuns them but they can't promote an agenda and marriage is not permitted. They are gay, and have a personal relationship no one going to judge or ban it unless promoting to kids. So the gays get along with straights and some of the gay clubs are popular with straights. There are also Swinger Clubs, which have no problem unless that promote the life style to kids. Overall everyone gets a long, gays are not in danger. The result is everyone gets along. There is actually a lot more personal freedom in Russia than in the US, just don't impinge on others rights to pursue their goals. In the gay clubs, it is common for straight to enjoy the same atmosphere. Just to not promote it to kids. There are many social spheres and there is no conflict, everyone gets along.. I have been going to clubs and social events for 24 years and never seen a fight. I stopped going to dance clubs in my native USA 35 years ago because they were dangerous. I never got a car here but in my native California you could not live without every adult in the family having a car because nothing is accessible. It is so easy to make friends here, and everyone on the street or theater or grocery store could be a friend it you started conversation. Even of they so not agree with something, they are no hostile or want you to change your mind. They might say, "that's interesting, but I believe xyz". No cancel culture Access to culture is unmatched in any of the 92 countries I have spent time in. The US is almost devoid of culture. In my adopted city St Petersburg there are 473 museums and 54classical music halls and 232 drama theaters, all within walking distance from my city center apartment. It is to head off in any direction with no plan but surely something of great interest will be found. Welcome to Russia

You also forgot to mention the medical system in Russia, and it is very different from the American one. But I think that the tables have turned...now the US is becoming like the Soviet Union, and Russia has become (the good things) that the US used to be. I want to move to Russia. I am 73 and in good health -and a long time Spanish teacher. I will have to look into this. As a US Marine (once a Marine, always a Marine) I hate to see the disintegration of the country that I once loved. I also loved the US National Anthem, but when you hear Shaman sing the Russian National Anthem, there is no comparison...the Russian is so complex and beautiful, musically and lyrically.

I've been to the USA five times in 2006-2007, three of them included Hawai'i, the food is absolutely delicious there. The most challenging was counting how much is dollar per ounce / pound. I even saw Russian food in Ala Moana mall in Waikiki, Oahu. Wonderful place. For those who love their home it is easy to love and respect another's home
