I braved ovarit (for the first time in my life) to see what the TERFs were saying about Cade. Apparently it's "powerful writing". A couple even described it as "refreshing" and "soothing". The ones who do criticise it take issue with her language, or *sometimes* the call to violence. Except one, whose big problem was ... that it was posted to her porn site, and linking *porn* to ovarit is a no-no. Quite a few pretend that we're misreading it. They say it's metaphorical and they don't *really* want us dead, nudge nudge wink wink. To which I can only ask whether the second amendment that she mentions is a metaphorical right to bear arms, or a right to bear metaphorical arms.
@pandora8610

Oh, and some brush it off as nothing to do with them because she's "not a feminist". They don't disagree with anything she says, but she made porn, so they can dispose of her once she's served her purpose as a weapon against trans people. Because I guess that's how these "feminists" think women should be treated.

Please, please talk to someone you trust. Even an online therapist, if you're able. A family member you respect, a friend who's shown empathy, in the past, anyone. It can be really hard to "get over" these kind of anxious moments, but it helps to have anyone who you can relate to, to bring you back to "normalcy." When you're isolated, you're able to kind of worry yourself into a frenzy, and tend to forget the good things in your life, the things for which you feel grateful. Please talk to someone. 🙏🏻

I almost fell down the TERF rabbit hole. They are very good at couching their message and sounding reasonable. That's how these types of groups get people - start with the small, sensible ideas most everyone can agree on and then slowly reveal their true, terrible ideology. And honestly, one of the biggest warning bells for me was their name, specifically the "exclusion" part; I don't think I've ever met people who were proud of excluding others, and were "the good sort". So yeah, I don't think it's a good idea to let them rebrand themselves as merely "gender critical" when only a few years ago they were so proud of being "trans exclusionary". They've just realized how the latter sounds and how it hurts their recruitment potential. If we stop calling them what they are, it'll only help them. And at they're core, they hate trans people far more than they care about women's rights.
@BlueCyann
@BlueCyann 2 года назад
That's why they've been trying to shed the original label for the general type of thought in favor of gender critical, going so far as to claim that "terf" is a slur.

Yeah, as someone who unknowingly dabbled into the alt-right pipeline years ago, you hit the nail on the head. In addition to sounding sensible, they try to portray anybody in their opposition as an irrational idiot too. What saved me was realizing that my friends and family IRL with social justice values were nothing like the strawmen that they were portraying. Ironically, Trump's nomination also snapped me out of it and pushed me left too. And yeah, I have yet to see this video at the moment probably because it hits a little close to home for me. Not as a trans person (cis asian male here), but as someone who feels shame for getting suckered into that pipeline awhile back.

I find it interesting that Dave understands the problem with white feminists trying to leave out Sojourner Truth and other black feminists because of the “conflating” but he doesn’t seem to apply that logic to how he’s doing the same thing to black LGBTQ people. I personally think it doesn’t matter whether he knows he’s doing it or not because he’s doing it and it has consequences.
@kite-flying_potato

I have a hard time believing he doesn't know what he's doing because, for his whole career, he's been making white people laugh at their own cognitive dissonance regarding race, showing deep, nuanced insight into identity and prejudice. Now, after supposedly reflecting on what trans people have explained to him is harmful about his words, he doubles down? It feels like a personal aversion to something he finds distasteful, like the hierarchy of marginalization has been unfairly upset by a a bunch of uppity trans folks who won't wait their turn. Sorry for the long reply. I was a big fan of his, and everything about all of this is disappointing and scary.
@LembeckIsStaying
@LembeckIsStaying 2 года назад
Not trying to be mean, just trying to shed light on something that may seem remedial to you but difficult to us "normies". As a black man, race has no choice. No coming out. No pronouns. You're just, say, black and that's that. The thing I struggle with is the CHOICE. I think Dave sees the CHOICE to take on the burden of LGBTQ juxtaposed to race. Race, especially in America, you either figure it out from birth or perish. Dave used humor of white cognitive dissonance as a defense mechanism. Remember, Dave started out at like 14 as a comedian with his race jokes. He was still a child. Dave didn't get to "come out" at 30 and decide to be a comedian. It was thrust on him since birth. So yeah, in some ways he sees a certain form of privilege. Again just trying to provide a context.

@@kite-flying_potato I agree, an old friend of mine though tried explaining to me (from a black queer Muslim perspective) that some black Muslims (Dave is one) can be a little more overkill in the toxic masculinity/socially conservative sphere and his interpretation of Islam makes Dave feel like he’s right and that he’s being “martyred”. I’m a Mexican Catholic that’s queer so I get what he was trying to explain to an extent since machismo is a problem with Mexican men and they can be pretty queer-phobic as well. I’m nonbinary, and while I’d argue that the transphobia I deal with is much more rooted in the idea that I’m a special little snowflake inventing new genders just so that I can yell at people for not acknowledging them, and I don’t necessarily feel like I would be physically threatened the way that trans women in particular are, the rising amount of transphobia is fucking terrifying to me. So terrifying that I’ve developed insomnia and keep a bag of non perishable essentials and cash in a cabinet in my basement so that if I’m outed to my parents, people I know to be extremely transphobic, I can leave my house as quickly as possible. Every once in a while, I have a moment of clarity in the middle of the night or something where I realize how truly fucked up it is to be experiencing this amount of fear, and I just cry for a long time. It’s probably awful to be thinking this, but one of the small pieces of satisfaction I get out of this nightmare is that if I weren’t actually nonbinary and if I really was just a cis girl trying to feel special, I’d just go back. I would lock all my gender feelings in a box and put that box somewhere that I’d never ever be able to find it ever again. Just grow out my hair, put on a dress and pretend that nothing ever happened. But since my egg’s cracked and I’ve started experimenting with my presentation in the privacy of my room where no one can see me, I’ve been happier than I’ve ever been in my life. Even when I leave my room and mumble some excuse about just being a butch lesbian, people have commented on how I’ve seemed much more cheerful and energetic, and more strangers have approached me to try and compliment me, make friends, or even flirt, that last one being especially wild to me. I love the person I’ve become who doesn’t give a fuck about the gender binary, and even as I’m being faced with the possibility of homelessness and I still don’t wanna go back. Ever. I can’t go back to who I was before this. And I know that once the inevitable nightmare that will be my official coming out blows over, I’ll be even happier.

I am a non-binary person who shoved down my feelings for decades and tried to present as the stereotypical picture of my birth assigned gender. It wasn’t easy (or frankly successful), because I *don’t* identify with my birth assigned gender. Just because I didn’t kill myself and found good things to keep me going doesn’t mean it was “better” for me. It took a great deal of disassociation to survive. If I had the language in childhood to understand who I was and greater acceptance of queerness in general, I might have come to terms a lot sooner.

I live in the UK & shits getting bad here. I came out 11yrs ago & over the last few years the amount of abuse & even violence I've endured has risen sharply. I cannot overstate how unsafe I feel living here in England. Years of hate crimes have left me with agoraphobia & PTSD, those have led to depression & insomnia Over the last year I've had to have a couple of teeth repaired after one attack (It's not the first time I've had to have dental work from a transphobic attack). A few months before last Xmas I was assaulted & my right arm & shoulder got badly injured, then just as it was starting to heal another attack by a group of men made the injury not just come back but it made it much worse. As a result I was unable to even play guitar for about 6 months (guitar is my main way of coping with depression). Then I was assaulted by two men early this week & am currently limping from my knee being injured. I have many online trans friends from some of the safer states in America who have not experienced transphobia in public for multiple years where they live. This may surprise some but I know of a fair few trans people who are also considering moving to America, a growing number of us feel we'll be safer there than here (that does vary wildly depending on what state we look at though as Texas & England seem to be in competition to be the most transphobic). One thing I'm noticing is that the vast majority who speak about considering leaving this country are trans women or femme presenting non binary people as we're the ones our media targets daily. Yes I did say daily, not one day passes without at least one anti trans article being published in our papers (In the first 144 days of 2021 the Times paper printed 233 trans news pieces & the Times is no trans ally) I'm now seriously considering leaving the country of my birth in the hope of finding somewhere on this planet where I can live the last few decades of my life in peace, barely a day goes by without me thinking about leaving this country & not a day goes by without that though making me cry, I feel I have no home here in England anymore

I want to ensure that any advice taken by the police is inclusive and considerate to all those from communities with protected characteristics but also considers the public safety of women and girls.”" Note how he says that they need to " better reflect the public’s concern regarding the safety of women and girls". Why do we have this public concern you may ask, we have it because it's been whipped up by single issue hate groups such as the LGB Alliance who are given very regular space on our TV & in our newspaper to whip up "concern". Now that the concern has been created here the police for my area are allowing this artificially generated concern to guide policing policy. Here in Avon & Somerset there has already been a few cases of trans woman being sent to men's prisons & assaulted. There was a high profile case a few years ago of a trans woman being arrested as she damaged hospital property with a failed suicide attempt. She was misgendered, stripped of her bra & searched by a male officer, every few minutes officers would peer into her cell depriving her of privacy in her almost completely naked state. She was also pepper sprayed & had to wash it out with the water from the toilet as officers refused to give her water. I am honestly as afraid of the police as I am of groups of 4 or more men (most physical attacks have been from groups of 4 men or more) As you may have guessed from the length of my reply I am one of those scary trans activists the TERF's shout about but my activism is education. If you're on FB check out You might wanna learn more about trans people, I'm an admin there. Our aim is for trans people to lead conversations, we actually have a ban on cis people commenting for the first 2hrs of a post going up so trans & meta people get to be heard first. If I use the womens room (which i no longer do) I am harassed. There is no way for me to use the restrooms without fear. Growing up, my father called Trans women perverts and said he'd rather die than let them use the same bathroom as me. It disgusted me. @olaitanmos1916 2 года назад
@Alice Um how does that work? As a cis woman how on earth does acknowledging that the being a woman is more than just my vigina make it seem that I chose to be a woman???? Being Trans isn't a choice so why would Being cis be??? Also you claim that it's ableist because some disabled people can't figure out what theirs is??? As somebody who isn't neotyplical doesn't that mean any identity are ablelist because we have a harder time figure it out??? If they can't figure out their sexuallity does that mean being gay is ablelist????
@olaitanmos1916
@olaitanmos1916 2 года назад
But it's still at the end of the day reducing being a woman to nothing but your body parts. What your definition of "biological female"? Somebody with xx chromosomes? Somebody who has a V? Somebody who has periods? Because there are many women who don't fit into these categories trans or cis. Being a woman is more complicated than just that.

And at the end of the day it's just disrespectful , exclusionary and invaliding. Trans women (whether you like it or not) aren't harming you. And it's a lot more harmful to them for you to claim they aren't women then it is for them to claim to be women. Just look at the trans suicide rate or the amount of hate crimes. As clearly shown in the video the ideology of another minority group/ set of women being harmful to a real/superior group of (most of the time) women has been used throughout history and is not just harmful to those groups but also dragged back women's rights and only benefited cishet men.

We should work together to fight and takedown the systems that are oppressing all of us! Thanks for reading my explanation.

Haven’t finished the video yet and will edit this if you discuss it but one other fascinating aspect of Sojourner Truth’s life was this: she was a slave in the Hudson Valley in upstate New York, raised speaking Dutch. She was a fluent speaker of multiple languages, including standard American English, and her speech at the Seneca Falls convention was in standard American English. The form we are familiar with today, the form where the phrase “ain’t I a woman” originates, wasn’t published until 1863, when Frances Dana Gage rewrote it to be in what she considered a southern black dialect, but which was in actuality a minstrel show knock-off designed to make Northerners feel innocent of the original sin of slavery. Sojourner Truth was a slave in the North, and this bears repeating. According to the 1851 transcription, her first sentence was “May I say a few words? I want to say a few words about this matter.” According to Gage’s, though, it was “Well, chillen, whar dar’s so much racket dar must be som’ting out o’kilter.” You might notice some differences!

I feel the same but also understand where she is coming from. A lot of transphobes like to paint us (us meaning trans people) as irrational beings that act solely on emotion and not "facts and logic", as highlighted by the attack helicopter "jokes" and the stereotype of the screeching SJW. I can't speak for or over Jessie on this but I can definitely confirm for myself and trans people I've been connecting with online that our (justified) anger at oppression and discrimination is constantly invalidated and used against us. So apologising for our emotions and overly explaining our reasons for why we are allowed to exist becomes second nature to some of us, and oftentimes is the only means of reaching those who are still somewhat willing to listen but who have already taken in some of those hateful stereotypes. In arguments with my family, for instance, written discussions about me being a trans man have an approximate ratio of 90% content that's me explaining myself and citing the WHO, Harvard and other reputable sources, and 10% being invalidated or sent links leading to articles about "the eco dictatorship aided by gender hubris". I stopped talking to certain family members after I realized this, but it's very easy to slip back into the habit.

I appreciate the over-apologizing. Why I love Jessie Gender is she seems to hate the culture war as much as I do. BTW, I consider myself a TERF sympathizer (for reasons). I personally despise both the right and the left in this polarized era. The most Bad Faith arguments are constantly platformed and promoted and the average person engages with it as if their own thoughtfulness cannot flesh out the issues- they become passionate parrots. The apology-preamble is a device used by intelligent people. It sets a tone for both the speaker and the listener(s). It says, "I've seriously considered the counter-arguments, in good faith, and with all due respect here is what I think." The problem with the culture warriors (both sides) is they all treat their own arguments as self-evident and all their opponents' arguments as easily dismiss-able...And if that were the case then why do their opponents' position continue to persist? Oh because ignorance and evil and power and money (...once again: both sides)

@@Peepeepoopoo386 but this seems like another trap we can fall into - in which because of our distaste for strident struggle in the public sphere- those who claim don't have a direct stake in the matter can declare 'both sides' to be crazy, when there might very well be established facts, an actual right/wrong (i.e. bigotry), as well as an huge imbalance in power and harmful effects. And where there is an institutional power clearly choosing sides as the BBC has done, in opposition to entire group of people who have very little power, this is where the 'both sides' centrism falls short. For example, those who were courageous enough to decry racism in my country and never minced words to appease the tender sensibilities of centrists...they weren't at fault. Oppression is not a competition and it's wrong across the board equally to discriminate against someone for their race, colour, religion, gender identity, sexuality, ability or anything. He's belittling our struggles because in his opinion they're not as bad as what historically black people had to go through. Though I would argue that anti-LGBT stigma actually seems to override racial things, given how badly LGBT people can be treated in their own families and communities, regardless. (A lot of the violence and hostility against queer folks of color is actully from other people of color, notably. ) And too often anti-trans stigma crops up even in the LGBT community. I think where the intersectionality can come in is that white privilege can dissuade a good chunk of the overt violence and hostility that queer people of color don't have that particular shield about. Of course, in the UK, the Right and the churches and other religious groups are fomenting the idea that LGBT people are a legitimate target even *for* people of color or immigrants, which feeds their xenophobic narrative just fine.

One thing I hadn't thought about so much before was where you noted the odd confusion of some left wing issues being intermingled with right wing ones in both the alt-right and terf groups. Having read several books on the rise of fascism in1930s(Specifically Mazower's books and Paxton's Anatomy of Fascism), I was reminded very much of both the analysis of historians, and the direct statements of Mussolini and Hitler about how Fascism deliberately absorbed certain elements of the left in order to fulfull its far right goals.

It also gives them cover, and by them, I mean both the people espousing these ideologies, and the ones who superficially criticize them while still agreeing with the aims and policies of the far right. A good example is how conservatives will blame Nazism on the left by pointing to the "socialist" in the party's name, ignoring the fact that the first people to be forcibly removed from the party were those with any socialist leanings, in the Night of Long Knives. It also ignores that authoritarian regimes and political ideologies will appropriate populist rhetoric (see the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) while doing the exact opposite in practice. Trump himself did this in his 2016 run, pretending to care about the working class and blue collar jobs. He even went so far as to hug a rainbow flag and promise to protect the LGBT community in his convention speech, just days after selecting Mike Pence as his running mate.

It's also a reality that there are plenty of bigots out there who have no issue with left-wing economic ideas, so long as they don't benefit black people, or gay people, or anyone they don't like. People who oppose free healthcare because the thought of a black person being helped by their money is horrifying to them, but would be cool with socialism for white folks. And regrettably there are parts of the left who look at those people and think "we should ally with them to get what we want economically, and worry about converting them on social issues later." When the reality is, you'll never, ever convert somebody who has gotten to that place. I remember when Richard Spencer said he was cool with free healthcare for "his people" and leftist spaces I hung out in were suddenly filled with brocialists insisting the rest of us were closeminded for not wanting to team up with him.

That BBC article about trans women coercing lesbians into sleeping with them made me beyond angry. I don't usually put in complaints about that kind of stuff, just because (call me cynical) I don't think it'll make much of a difference. But I made an exception for this one. All I got back from them was some lukewarm PR response about their "commitment to impartially" (which is laughable at this point) and they even kind of acknowledged that the survey they used as the basis for the article was heavily biased, but clearly that didn't stop them from publishing the article. The British media is honestly so exhausting at this point. What's worse is that there are so many people in this country, many of them cis lesbians and feminists, who unequivocally support trans rights, but because of how our media works, they never get a voice. Most of our journalists and editors are middle- to upper-middle class white cishet people who all come from the same private schools and all know each other, so not only are dissenting viewpoints from the mainstream rare, but they are heavily discouraged by peer pressure basically. Jessie, I don't know if you've read the book "The Transgender Issue" by Shon Faye, but I would highly recommend it. Faye is a trans woman and activist/journalist and the book is a pretty in-depth look at the representation of trans people in the British media and generally the state of trans rights in this country, both historically and now (it touches a little on US politics, but it's predominantly British-centric). It's also unapologetically leftist lol. I just finished reading it and even as a trans Brit, I learned a lot. I have a feeling it would be right up your alley :).

The LGB Alliance is severely pathetic. Their 'survey' 'proving that trans people are predatory' didnt even have a 100 people. Only 80, and the people in that survey likely came from their facebook page. It was so utterly pathetic. You would think the LGB Alliance with their large influence could come up with larger sample size to represent millions of people. @@mkra7769 for me it's mostly german Songs, I tend to blend out the meaning of English vocals so I opt for my mother tongue. I recommend looking into punk rock and sub categories of hiphop/rap. If you'd like german specifics: "Schrei Nach Liebe" by Die Ärzte is a loud angry and fantastic song and cult classic about nazis/fascists putting up walls of bias and racism to hide their vulnerabilities. Also the refrain calls the nazis "asshole" so if you'd like something that feels like you're punching a nazi this is your go to. I also recommend "Schunder-Song" by the same band which is very much about the vocalist describing a scenario of confronting his long-term bully and his act of physical revenge (punch the dude into the face over and over again). Obviously not a civil solution in reality but weirdly therapeutic to scream along with ;) The third I've been obsessed with recently is by Danger Dan "das ist alles von der Kunstfreiheit gedeckt". It's more a casual piano piece, but it talks about how the artist can easily call major fascist publishers or politicians "anti semitic", "nationalsocialist" etc without any repercussions because of his right and freedom to artistic expression. So if they decide to sue them for slander he's just gonna pop open a bottle of sect and know that all his lyrics are covered by law. Its a celebration of democracy and victory over right wing actors who pretend they are nor the fascists that they are. Last verse goes into neither trusting the police nor the secret service, due to their involvement with fascist terrorism/racism. Also contains "fascists don't stop being fascists, one does not humor them by debating them, as history has shown them." You might have to search a little for artists or specific songs you enjoy but the hunt is rewarding. I'm still building my own playlist with these songs. ☆

Well, a lot of them *aren't* who they claim to be, for one thing. For some, what it is is their own pain and fear and sometimes trauma have been turned by ideology to scapegoating. It's how they get so attached to the idea that transwomen are or will make them vulnerable to 'rapist men' and that seems to lead to the idea that transness must be destroyed, among other boundary issues. That sort of 'feminist' has a track record of attacking easier targets that don't quite fit their ideals rather than ever dare go after the real problems. I don't know how old you are, but this type seemed to spend more time trying to get riotgrrrls to fit in with their dour and sometimes insane plans, (like wanting us to go after shoe stores for selling high heels no one was even wearing, ) ..or wanting us to join in attacking independent record stores over one album or another, even if it was the only place selling *our* music. BAck in the 80's and 90s, that wave of 'feminist' seemed most obsessed with trying to keep refighting the 'last 'war' even if we'd kinda won on those fronts. They wouldn't dare go for the wall to wall sexism of major chains, with *nothing* but corporate music..... Basically they seem to feel like they become powerful by allying with the Christian Right if it allows them to hurt someone even more vulnerable. Even at their own expense. Christianists and other Righties treat trans and intersex people as if they just up and decide to 'identify like something' today and that is also a fallacy meant to somehow justify denial of civil rights and human dignity to people who don't happen to fit your patriarchal notions of 'anatomy at birth is destiny, ...unless of course someone's inconveniently ambiguous that way, too.'

That's actually what stopped me from becoming a TERF. Years ago, I truly believed trans people were trying to make everyone trans and if you didn't have sex with a trans person, you were labelled a bigot. When I complained about this, I noticed the people who agreed with me also hated on feminists, people of colour, gay people...so I started questioning whether my fears around trans people were even true. Then RU-vid recommend some Contrapoints and Kat Blaque videos and they addressed every concern I had (most of my assumptions were based on pure lies!) I'm still learning and trying to be a better ally. The TERF shit I'm seeing now though, is so far removed from what I used to think....it's actually scary that could have been me had I not listened to actual trans people. They have already thought about it, though, and sided with right-wing viewpoints and general bigotry. Their thoughts are that if there is a group that allows them to keep their viewpoints, then they will agree with what that group says. It also helps that many transphobic talking points are memes from lesbophobic talking points which are themselves memes from misogynistic talking points, so it’s not like the need to dig so far, but if they feel like it they will. An example is not accepting a trans woman as a woman because they think trans woman means female->male. It dovetails quite nicely into how men themselves can’t pursue womanly hobbies which itself is the counterpart to “women should stay in the kitchen” rhetoric. It’s contradictory, but the point is that there is only one correct way which contracts and expands depending on if they want to be particularly nasty to trans people or create more transphobes. While there are plenty of people falling into that hole that could be saved, and even people who are deep in that hole who can be convinced to change their views, in general they know their views and will be unwilling to change them and ally with other bigots because they too allow them to express their spiteful bigoted beliefs which naturally connect with other spiteful bigoted beliefs. It’s like conspiracy theories believing all the conspiracy theories but with bigotry.

If Jessie feels like she needs to do something similar again maybe asking a cis person to read the _really_ tansphobic quotes would make sense. Obviously no decent person is going to feel comfortable reading that but I'm pretty sure it easier to do it and put it out of your mind if you'd don't have the same skin in the game. Obviously asking someone else to do that is something it's hard to do but there's definately a utilitarian - it'll cause less harm overall - argument to be made in favour of asking a cis person to do it.

@@GODOFHELLFIRE3 That's always a conundrum in these types of identity issues, isn't it? Looking back at the 50's-60's civil rights movement of America, we must acknowledge both Martin Luther King Jr's nonviolent resistance, AND Malcolm X's more extreme calls for violence for bringing the country closer to racial justice and equality (though obviously there's still much more ground to cover). I think we're also going through similar movements in the gender identity sphere now, so while I do think we disagree strongly on the how, only history will be able to say if either one of us was more "right" than the other. In the meantime, I still appreciate a softer, more nuanced voice as I seek more understanding, and I certainly will continue to seek other sources on this journey as well.
