A nifty project I've been doing on the side for a few months.
Hopefully this will help some people out. A lot of the problems I talk about in this video are really easy to fix, but they took me days to solve just because I had very little information on the topic.
Links to stuff I used in this video:

FYI: There are three cable types for the Beast: mPCIe, NGFF, and ExpressCard. Make sure you choose the right one for your laptop.

The HDMI cable I used: www.amazon.com/4K-HDMI-Cable-...
Even though I couldn't get the extra cable setup to work, this cable performed slightly better than the generic AmazonBasics cable. If you're trying something similar, I would recommend this CZoom one or some other fancy schmancy cable.

UPDATE: The WiFi Dongle broke today (Like a month after I started using it). I'm currently sitting in a crowded room with a long network cable running under everyone's chairs and feet. 0/10 would not recommend. Do your homework and get a WiFi dongle that isn't hot garbage, unlike me.

i know that iam late but i am planning to make an egpu build with 1050ti 4gb will it perform well with forza horiozn 4 ultra settings
@jousboxx9532

Unfortunately, no. The 1050ti will generally only get you >60fps on medium to low settings or on older games. This site will probably be helpful to you: www.gpucheck.com/game-gpu/forza-horizon-4/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1050-ti/intel-core-i5-680-3-60ghz/

To fix the problem of having black internal screen, you need to get a modded bios for your laptop and set the internal display to igfx. It was sg by default for me. It fixed this problem for me.

did u experience any performance drop using da mini pcie what was ur bandwidth i want to buy some n ma laptop has both da express slot n da pcie which one should i get
@jousboxx9532
@jousboxx9532 5 лет назад
IIRC the theoretical max of my setup is 500mb/s (don't quote me on that), but I was getting values in the 350-400 range. I'd suggest you go with the ExpressCard slot because you wouldn't need to destroy the inside of your computer and remove the WiFi to make it work. Also, it would be removable. From my experience, the bandwidth tends to be limited by the quality of the cable and GPU interface rather than by the type of port you plug it into.

could something like this work with like a 4k monitor or a high refresh rate monitor or is it down to what gpu you put in it
@jousboxx9532
@jousboxx9532 5 лет назад
It's all down to the GPU. I'm getting about a 15% performance hit because of the slow mPCI link, but I had it working perfectly fine with a 4K TV. However, I tried it with my 1080Ti and it didn't work. That is probably due to limitations of my motherboard, but keep it in mind.

I cant run windows without my wifi card, it crash with a blue screen and increase in a insane way my fan also without conected the exgpu, and also disabling the UEFI is nothing there :T
@jousboxx9532
@jousboxx9532 4 года назад
woahwoahwoah slow down there buddy! I will be happy to help you but I'm not entirely sure what your problem is. If I understand correctly, you cannot run Windows unless your WiFi card is connected, and you tried unsuccessfully to use the eGPU with UEFI off. What make/model computer and GPU are you using? What version of Windows? What other procedures have you tried?
@BrianVG
@BrianVG 4 года назад
@@jousboxx9532 ok, I'm trying to start the egpu in UEFI, it doesn't crash for not having the wifi card, it crashes just for connecting the minipci-e (ngff) cable in the port without connecting the EXP GDC8.5 (with gtx760), the graphic card and the power supply energize at the same time as the laptop (acer E5-553 AMD A12 9700p) but it gives me a blue screen with the error "A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed". If I put the UEFI off and activate the leagacy mode, it only tells me "no bootable device" in black screen. and in the same way from the boot menu. My windows 10 is original from the factory, maybe I have to install a new windows version since the one I have is very protected?

@jousboxx9532
@jousboxx9532 4 года назад
@@BrianVG Very sorry about the slow reply, I must have missed the notification. You're correct that you will have to reinstall Windows. The Windows bootloader is stored in some UEFI partition, so when you switch to legacy mode it doesn't detect that and it will fail to boot. I would recommend making a LiveUSB of Ubuntu and trying to boot that in legacy mode with the eGPU installed. That will ensure that you don't have any other problems preventing you from booting, so you don't waste your time reinstalling Windows only to find that it doesn't fix your problem.

I don't have one of those, so I don't know. Look it up on eGPU.io and see if anyone posted a build guide. Or, just give it a try. Even if it doesn't work, it's unlikely that you will damage the computer, and if you have any questions I'm happy to help!

Hello, I'll be happy to help you with your problem, but you need to explain it more thoroughly first. What version of the EXP GDC beast do you have, what connector? Where on your computer did you plug it in? What power supply are you using and how is that connected? What Graphics card and monitor are you using? Also, please include any other relevant info. eGPU setups are very finnicky and particular, so please explain your setup and problem with as much detail as possible.

@@yusufaljuboori9851 Hey, sorry for the slow response, just saw your replies. It looks like your external monitor is severely damaged. I don't see anything wrong with your hardware setup, so my guess would be that it's just the monitor. With that big of a dent on the screen, it's likely that some circuitry inside is broken too. Also, make sure your laptop is in BIOS or Legacy mode, *not* UEFI mode. Also, make sure the ATX PWR switch on the EXP GDC is set to ON.

I’m running on an i5 chip with 8gb of RAM, what gpu is optimal? I wanna play Fortnite 1080p competitive settings at at least 60 FPS 🙃 Edit: also link for 3d print model
@jousboxx9532
@jousboxx9532 4 года назад
Any card equal to or better than a 1050Ti or 1650 should comfortably handle Fortnite at 1080p on medium to low settings (I'm assuming that's what you mean by "competitive"). Depending on what i5 you have, you may experience CPU bottlenecking, tho. As shown at 7:40 in the video, a lot of builds cause my dual-core 4th gen i7-u to chug. Luckily, you can often get huge performance gains just by cleaning out your fans/heatsinks and applying aftermarket thermal paste to the processor, so if that is a problem all hope is not lost. As for the 3D model, I will dig that up and get you a link this weekend :)
@dagingerbreadman70
@dagingerbreadman70 4 года назад
Jousboxx what do you mean by “chug”? I’m kind of new to all this... And I’m concerned that my small ram makes it slower, do I need to upgrade it? It’s an i5-3320M @ 2.60 GHz 2.60GHZ with 7.7 usable ram out of the potential 8. Lenovo thinkpad x230. What exactly is bottlenecking anyway, is it that the system runs SLOWER with a better gpu or that it still runs better the better the gpu but that the gpu is used inefficiently? I may just take the laptop to my local hardware guy to get the fan cleaned and thermal paste changed. I used to run a little iphone fixing business so I’m familiar with how delicate some components can be, I don’t want to tear a flex cable.
@jousboxx9532
@jousboxx9532 4 года назад
@@dagingerbreadman70 "Chug" isn't really an official technical term, I'm just saying that it was kind of laggy in that situation. In most cases, RAM won't really make the game run slower or faster. It's just that you need a specific amount of RAM to run a game. If you don't have enough available, the game won't run at all or it will suddenly get super laggy. To see if you have enough RAM, you can load up Fortnite on your laptop and set all the graphics settings to high. Don't worry about the terrible framerate, just open up task manager and check how much RAM you're using. If you have less than a gigabyte free, you probably need to upgrade. I can't tell you for sure if your hardware will run Fortnite *well*, but I can say that it will run. Thinkpads are generally well built and utilize the hardware to its fullest capacity. Bottlenecking is basically when one component is not being fully utilized because it's waiting on something else. In this case, it would most likely be the GPU waiting on the CPU and the PCI-E link. And yeah, cleaning the fan and putting on new thermal paste can never hurt. I would recommend Arctic Silver 5, I've been using it for years with great results. Also, probably avoid liquid metal. It provides great thermal gains, but it is difficult to properly apply, can damage your hardware, and will "wear out" after a few months (at least that was my experience). P.S. I added the links to the Blender files in the description :). The exported models were very disorganized and incomplete, but I know that the blender files have everything.
