I have tried many creams for the bags under my eyes that bother me very much. Some work temporarily for parties, some not at all. When I listen about surgery, it is about removal of the fat from under eyes, however I am not convinced that is the fat since some creams take them away temporarily. I am a bit confused about the treatment. I just know I hate having these ugly bags under my beautiful eyes.
It is because you are pumping the fluid out from under your eyes with cardio. It is the heat of the exercise plus the draining that does the trick. The lazy way, very hot showers on the face for a minute or two. It expands the vessels and lets them drain. All this Apply Cold is nonsensical.

Then they said to me that aren't you happy that you're going to heaven too? I looked at both of them and said, "why would I like to go to somewhere where they allow you two?" My point exactly.
If you want to get rid of those bags beneath your eyes, all you have to do is sleep with your head elevated. When you're lying down, fluid builds up underneath your eyes, so keep your head up with two pillows - but don't sleep with your face in the pillow. Also put a cold wet washcloth on your eyes every morning for at least 30 seconds. I know it sounds ridiculous, but it does work. I've been doing this for years!
@@nad7742 When you're lying down, fluid builds up underneath your eyes. Try sleeping on your back with your head slightly elevated about 20 to 30 degrees by using two pillows. This will help lessen and eliminate those bags.
Thanks for adding this! The only concern I have with pillows specifically is that it may put stress on the spine and could result in some other issues (I lose feeling in my arms when I sleep with my head jacked up like that) but sleeping with your whole body at a slight incline may help.
I was going through the 5 stages of denial watching this but at the end I reached acceptance. Less salt and a cold compress is all you can do. Also, I think moving to a colder climate might help in general.
BLAST ! ! ! You know that saying - "You didn't tell me what I wanted to hear, you told me what I needed to hear."? Pains me to say that this saying fits in this situation. I WANTED AN EASY FIX ! ! ! But thank you for your honesty and integrity. You're a good man and a great doctor.....
I had a lower lid blepharoplasty done at age 66 and never regretted it. I had extreme puffy eyes and now I look like the rest of the population. I feel like a normal person. No great beauty but I do not have those depressing bags anymore. Sometimes diet changes and allergy meds just don't cut it.
Exactly! I've been stopped while walking through the mall by several sales people with different products 😢 I'm definitely going to have my bags removed 🎉
@@ardymoore694 I don't know you, but I want you to be happy. If happy is NOT having it done, that's o.k.! If getting a blepharoplasty done that's o.k. too. It's all about YOU. All I can tell you is I didn't know what was worse, the lower bulges or the upper over hang puffiness. I needed both. Ardymoore, I can't TELL you how relieved I STILL am that I no longer have undereye pouches. My surgeon told me I might want the upper lids done again, but the lower space under the eye never returns. I suppose had I to choose one I would have chosen the under eye pouches. Mine were rather 'sad'. They were gone the minute I was sent out of the O.R. (you will have to pay for an O.R., otherwise upper lids are done in the surgeon's office). My friend picked me up to go home, and I looked into her rear view mirror,... and I was shocked that my bulges were GONE. You can decide which procedure you will want, but there are two. One is to excise fat from the outside of the lid. The other is to do it from the inside thus no cutting of the lower eye muscle - which is what I did. Study up on it to make your VERY VEST decision, .. and I wish you MUCH HAPPINESS!!!! 😍
I'm 43 and got Ulcerative Colitis last year. I lost around 100lbs in 4 months and I now have very noticeable bags under my eyes. I will try these techniques. Thanks!
I've noticed that if I sleep on my back, I don't get the puffiness under my eyes. If I sleep on my side, then that side gets puffy. I figured it's like lividity, where your fluids pool when you die depending on position of your body at death. It's hard for me to sleep on my back, I even try to slant my upper body up for sinus reasons & find that's even better. As a senior woman on low sodium diet, this is only my observation, no scientific study, but it's free to try at home, no risks. Glad to see a Dr. Not selling his own products.
Yes that works great ! Your lucky I find it sooooo hard to sleep on my back but I do for a week before an important function so my under eyes look great.
If I don't sleep on my back my eyes are terribly swollen in morning. I now sleep on sofa with pillows propping up my head to be elevated. The added support for my hips to lean into the back of sofa, helps keep me comfortable. And the arm of the sofa keeps my head elevated.

I have severe dry eyes. I didn't know about the retinol exacerbating dry eye. I use retinol cream every night, and I always put it around my eyes. No more!!! Thank you! ❤️
Thanks for mentioned retinol creams, in fact I noticed that after using retinol under my eyes I got a blurry vision and very eye dry, I visited the eye doctor but couldn't tell me what the issue was. I did not have this problem with any other creams, I will stop using retinol under my eyes. Thanks again.
Bless you, doc, for suggesting an ice pack for itchy eyes. I've had lifelong allergies and my mother was always telling me "don't rub your eyes!" that but the relentless itching without relief was maddening. 🤩 And I've finally learned what the tiny blisters are on the rim of my eyelids: blocked Meibomian glands. Interesting. I get them from wearing waterproof mascara.

Thanks so much for the info. My under eye bags are huge and embarrassing. People usually think there's something wrong with me. They're a heredity trait unfortunately, that runs in my family on my father's side.
It's okay i have them too, people often ask me if i'm tired, but i get them from my mums side and i see my mum in the mirror and she won't be around forever ❤
Cucumbers reduce swelling. Effective on swollen ankle sprains for one. I had 4 wasp bites on the back of my hand. 3 days of swelling and itch. I finally used a few slices placed on the swelling wrapped with cellophane. The swelling was vastly reduced and I could see my knuckles again after 45 minutes. My thought was no wonder they used this for the eyes years ago. Try it yourselves
Under eye bags can be hereditary. It ran in our family. Noticing the fat pockets starting to protrude in my mid twenties, I had my under eye fat removed by a plastic surgeon. Best decision. As my sister aged, I was so glad I didn’t have the bags she had. Once the fat was removed, it never came back. That was 35 years ago.
You are much smarter and aware than all the other physicians who have posted videos on this subject on RU-vid. Your point about the skin under the eye helps a lot. Using an ice pack under my left eye less than 3 minutes has already lowered my eye puffiness by 100%. Thanks a Million!!👍👍
You are so full of wisdom concerning eye health. I trust you in every way as you have dry eyes and so do I. Thank so much for your personality and funny actions as you explain things. Many blessings to you and keep up the good work!
Very impressed with your video. As an Ophthalmic Technician for over 20 years, who works with an Ophthalmologist who specializes in Levator Advancement surgery and an expert on dry eye, I agree almost 100% with the information you provided. However, I do need to make mention of a more minimally invasive procedure call laser lower lid resurfacing that works absolutely incredible! I do suggest your patients and follower only see a board certified Ophthalmologist for consultation. In my experience, general plastic surgeons are slightly less experienced with lid skin and tend to be a bit more radical with their fat removal. Thank you for your time. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for an honest and realistic answer to what is a problem for me. I'm 80, and I've been lucky genetically that my face and skin have stayed quite firm. I had cataract surgery and after the surgery suddenly I ended up with these bags under my eyes. I've been going crazy buying all kinds of things that do not work. Cucumbers actually reduce inflammation. I eat them to reduce inflammation in my body. I have a severe case of inflammation so ive done this. My body moves with less pain because the inflammation is down. If i can feel it inside my body it makes sense it would work on the outside of my body too. I would suggest mashing a cucumber to get the juices out of them then soak the eyes in the mash instead of using slices because with the contours of the eyes slices may not get into every spot.
Thanks. I have known for some time, I need an upper eye lift, because my hooded eye lids are weighing down my eyelashes into my line of vision. Plus, I learned years ago, the only real solution to my under eye puffiness is surgery. Add allergies, and I am a mess during peak allergy seasons. I appreciate your precise and concise delivery, your integrity, and your nice manner. Blessings 🕊💕🕯😇🙏🏻💚
Hopefully you did not get surgery yet. I saw on a RU-vid commercial where a lady developed a sticky patch to put in the eyelid crease and voila no drooping eyelids!
My allergies were also worsening my melasma. Getting a robot vacuum REALLY helped. It runs everyday on a schedule. I also launder my bedding more often because of pets.
Thank you so much for your advice on this issue. I just recently noticed that I had a more pronounced eye bag under one of my eyes than the other. I have decided to cut back my salt intake and get into a better sleeping routine. It’s funny because the day I found your video I had taken out a cooling mask I had in my refrigerator and promised myself I was going to try it that night. Thanks again for all your advice.
Friends of mine went to a hospital in Bangkok to have this surgery because it was much cheaper than in America. I thought they were a bit silly but the surgery worked.
I had a Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty (finally at age 65) in November 2019 and apart from having two beautiful children, it was the best thing I had ever done. I had an Endoscopic Brow Lift 1 year later in November 2020. In reality, it takes a knife or a needle to remove or improve one’s cosmetic concerns. Now my eyes are complete! I absolutely love the results! Next stop-not plastic surgery but I am going to have my eyebrows microbladed.
@@ivymenchavez9434 Yes, the lower eyelid blepharoplasty. I had some pockets and dark circles and now they are 💯% gone. What a pleasure! You can apply for Care Credit and most doctors will accept that, gives you some breathing room depending on what plan the doctor’s office accepts. Where I live plastic surgery is actually reasonable and I have a wonderful plastic surgeon!😀
I've noticed that the lack of the proper amount of daily sleep(for me) is the main cause of my under eye bags. If I get less than 6 hours per night or if the sleep is broken(waking up in the middle of a sleep cycle) then my under eye area is negatively affected.
Thank you for your upfront honesty and not trying to sell any BS. I’ve never seen your videos before, but I’ll be looking out for them now. I’ll make sure to give your advice a try. God Bless
Greeting from South Africa. May God Bless you with all the desires of your heart for making this video. It's a blessing to me. I am definitely going to do a Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty, because Under Eye Bags make me look 10 - 15 years older than I am. My main cause has been scratching my eyes, whenever I have a allergy, from when I was 10 years old. They started showing when I was 42 years old. Now I am 52 years old and they make me look way older than I am. To those who don't have Eye Bags yet, please stop scratching your eyes. That will help to delay them from showing up.
I appreciate the diagram of the fat pushing out underneath the eye. My opthamalogist has talked to me about the surgery, but your visual helped me understand the condition and the surgery. My eye bags are caused by genetics but eating a high salt meal definitely makes them swell even larger! I am considering elevating my bed with bricks under the headboard legs...Thank you.
I have them & they are hereditary. I sleep with my head elevated already cuz of back injury & still have them. I have noticed when I put tea bags on them it helps a little but so far that's the only thing I've noticed to help. I don't eat salt at all. Never did. My mom never gave it to me & I can't eat any food with too much in it. Very sensitive to it.
I am 13! Yes 13 and I struggle with eye bags this was a great helpful video and I will try to use these tactics more. I think the main problem may be that when I was younger I would sleep with no pillow at all and only use my arm but now I'm trying to get into the habit of using them again
I wouldn't use a " frozen spoon " the tissue around the eyes is delicate and the extreme cold on a metal spoon will actually freeze burn the surface, a cold spoon will suffice, just saying .
I have eyebags at childhood due to severe allergies and bacteria infections. I don't have money for surgical correction to permanently get rid of it now. Please what can I use as temporal solution until I am able to save up for the surgical correction. It's giving me great worries seeing those eyebags on my face
For a lot of people, having a better diet and healthier lifestyle can help a lot of the skin appearance and swelling. Otherwise watching for allergies and calming any inflammation around the eyes can help too.
Ask a geriatric physician....they can tell in a second.......eating deli? Swollen ankles are serious as....dare I say...a heart attack. Took my dad when he had swollen ankles. Good doctor, said one word, posed as a question.... deli? Uhhh, yes.
Wow I've used retinol products under my eyes for a few months now thinking I've been doing the right thing. I have noticed slight worsening of my dry eyes but never correlated it to my retinol creams. Just hope I haven't caused any permanent damage 😭😭
I've had bags under my eyes since I can remember, but others only began to comment on it when I was in kindergarten. I wish I'd had the money to have lower lid blepharoplasty in my teens or twenties, when I got a lot of teasing. Finally, I got the surgery in my 50s. I am a cautionary tale. My left eye was great, but my right eye had chemosis and ectropion and recurrent styes for 10 months, then I got areferral to an Occuloplastic surgeon to (mostly) fix the ectropion and stitch my eyelids closed to (mostly) get rid of the chemosis, and now I have painfully dry eyes, due to MGD. I'm 11 months out from the initial blepharoplasty, currently in week 3 of 6 taking doxycycline, and watching your videos, learning how to manage my dry eyes. Your videos are a lot better at explaining different conditions than doctors on a tight schedule who don't take the time. The good news is I no longer have bags under my eyes!
I'm 75 & wore contact lenses from age 15 to my thirties, when I had an early form of "lasik", i.e. radial kerotomy, which allowed me to go without corrective lenses, at least partially! However, I always felt that the decades of pulling down my eyelids to insert contacts, led me to have premature 'baggy eyelids'! So, I believe other factors, beside heredity, can affect the tightness of your eyelids!
Some really good info here from a girl who suffers majorly with lower eye bags which are hereditary but definately worsen considerably in some days. Totally agree with the eye creams…. I have never been able to use them as they make my eyes worse
Also I used to put cold things under my eyes to get that "soothe" feeling but I noticed it was making my eye darker and a little bit more puffy. I think it was due to the cold stopping circulation and the warmth keeps that circulation going. I stopped cold compressing and doing a little bit of acupressure and my under eye area became more aesthetically pleasing for me.
How to get rid of puffy eyes: Lower salt intake Cold compresses Do not rub your eyes. Surgery. Do not use eye cream on the eye lids, especially retinoids. Protect your eye skin area: big hats, sunglasses, spf.
What about when you have natural under eye bags? I've had them my whole entire life. No matter what, they're always there. If I use a cold compress, does it last all day? Or do I need to keep using it? I'm tired of folks asking if I'm tired or what happened to my eyes.
Besides salt, another thing that adds to eye bags is carbs. Consuming carbs before bedtime will guarantee puffy eyes. Most people with a high carb diet seem to have baggier eyes. Also, keep a small stone facial roller in the freezer and use it to help smooth out bags. Feels good and works well.
Favourite part of the video was learning how to prevent eye bags as much as possible and the tips that help reduce it even if it isn’t all the way reduced
Can you elaborate on the surgery itself pease? How straightforward is it? Is it under general anesthesia? How long does it take? Are there complications? How long does it take to recover and see improvements? Any before and after photos would help too! Thank you!
I had bags that were just a little kind of puff. I noticed when I stopped using alot of my face products and started just a good retinoid ( I have sensitive skin so I use kinami7 retinoid) this helps collagen and isn't applied under my eye but my face only. It has improved my skin texture and my face looks more youthful ( glow, less sagging and brighter) this I guess helped tighten the under eye skin and now I look like I have 8 hours sleep a night lol
what about warm masks? my optometrist told me they’re better for eye strain and can help with the puffiness too by helping the unwanted liquids flow away
Interesting video. I'm a physician myself but as we all know its too easy to overlook important issues in other specialties. I did not realize that some of those tightening creams could be seriously bad leading to dry eye disease. That said use for say a special occasion - in other words infrequent use - probably lowers the risk of serious issues. I've heard of people using preparation H - same stuff used for hemorrhoids elsewhere in the body - I was wondering whether this was harmful too created the same issues. Your thoughts on careful and occasional use of these creams etc would be appreciated. Thanks for an excellent tutorial.
Hey thanks for asking. I have heard the preparation H trick too. It seems plausible to help, however, if it hasn't been tested and we don't have clinical evidence to back it up - and that use would be off label, I caution away from it. I will have to look more closely at the ingredients to see if there is anything in it that could cause problems to the eyelids long term.
Dr. Allen - Fantastic explanation! Greatly appreciate the commentary on avoiding certain ingredients in cosmetics. And, thank you for the @eyesarethestory shoutout!
This is a perfect question for which I need answers for! I tried out home remedies, etc (except prescriptions) however this video was exactly what I was looking for! Thanks. Xx
Super good suggestion! I should see what I can do. To eliminate those under-eye pouches, simply rest with your head raised. When reclining, fluid accumulates beneath your eyes, so maintain an elevated position using two pillows-just avoid placing your face directly on the pillow. Additionally, apply a chilled moist towel to your eyes every morning for a minimum of 30 seconds. It may seem absurd, but this technique is truly effective. I have been following these steps for numerous years!
This video makes allot of sense, ever since I went to the beach my eyes have been puffy, but you talk about high sodium content, which reminded me about the sea, explaining my puffy eyes! Keep it up!
Thanks for the graphic depiction of why I've developed a set of luggage under my eyes as I aged, as I never had any sign of bags when younger. Hard pass on the surgery though, my fear of it from past experience is far greater than any vanity I still have left! lol
Jogging (any exercise that make you sweaty) somehow got rid of my eye bugs as I stay in front of monitor for a min 9 hours a day 5 days a week. As soon as I stop jogging, the eye bug returned. Perhaps it's only for me. For others it may not work. Cold compression also helps a lot for me.
Oh my goodness!! This is an excellent idea!! This was part of my problem, nothing, absolutely nothing recommended was working for me. The eye bags appeared out of nowhere! But, very interestingly, they appeared after I could not exercise or expend! I tried home remedies and creams and cold, my diet was also scrutinized (everything!) and it was stunning me because it wouldn't go away. Proper ambulation is a fabulous thought and one I would have never even stumbled upon! Thank you! (Admittedly I do not move around enough I limit my intake so that I don't gain weight, but I have incidentally reduced my own movement!) I have been needing to improve my physical health and I have been lazy to do so, but maybe my "vanity" will be the trigger I need! Again, I can't thank you enough!
Could you please elaborate on the problem of dry eyes caused by the use of creams like Retin A, as you quickly mentioned on this video. Thank you very much.

I love your advice in this video. You answered so many of my questions. I'm a 64 year old Irish man living in San Diego. I want to protect my eyes and eyelids from UV light. Thankyou for all your kind advice.... When a person has been through trauma, abuse any excruciating painful stuff.... I recall you mentioned the affect on one's vision, so obviously puffy eyes also play a part... my question is can there be full recovery does it depend on age?....
Trauma can play a lot of roles on the eyes, trauma directly to the eye can result in tissue damage and therefore swollen eyes such as in the case of a black eye. Severe enough trauma can damage the orbit which can lead to muscle and nerve damage which can often lead to double vision. In both of these cases, the tissue does often heal over time, even for nerve damage - this can heal over the course of 6 months or so. Swelling of the eyelids usually resolves over a few days to weeks due to trauma, but obviously, better with treatment (like cold compresses). What I find most fascinating is how trauma can lead to hysterical amblyopia - which is where even though your eyes see just fine, your mind makes you think you are seeing blurry (or not at all). Crazy how powerful the mind can be.
I'm 74 years old. I did everything right starting in my youth; staying out of the sun (I was a musician and tended to sleep during most of the day), wearing sunglasses religiously when I was out during the day, drinking a ton of water etc. Still got 'em. I had heard from someone a while ago that rubbing the original formula of Preparation-H on under-eye bags was very effective at reducing the puffiness. I know it sounds like a joke at best and dangerous at worst, but at the time there seemed to be anecdotal evidence to support it. Or it could be one of those urban legends that persisted. According to what I was told, when the manufacturer of Preparation-H changed their formula, it stopped being effective. Then the story was that you could buy the original formula from Canada. I swear I'm not making any of this up. I'm just wondering if there is any truth to any of it.
my favorite part of this video was the reality of aging and basically doing your best naturally by eating right, exercising, getting proper rest, and using a cold compass. as a side note, I also use aloe vera and tuna plant to tighten.
Does retinaldehyde cause the same kind of damage in the eye area as retinol? Also, aren’t the preservatives in the eye drops also a risk for causing dry eye issues?
Cold compresses give temporary relief but i experienced when i put on a frozen wet cloth on my eye, that i may have caused some damage to my eyes. Thankfully it seems to be correcting itself.
I use a gel, Renu 28, which I put under my eyes, directly on the baggy area. (I don’t know why anyone would put such a product on the eyelid.) Renu 28 has dramatically reduced my level of under-eye bagginess.
