Throughout history, Fabriano has been a premier name in paper-making with a reputation for quality, style, and excellence. In my 3-part series, I explore three contemporary Fabriano products and why that reputation is assured.
In this video, the second of the three, I share my purchase of Fabriano's "seven senses of paper," their Bouquet of Notebooks.

Thank you so much! I still haven't even come close to filling all of these yet. Funny, depending on the day or mood, I'll slip one of these in the back pouch of my lunch bag for work and on my lunch break I just doodle in them. The colors make me feel happy and the different textures and styles of paper tend to challenge my whim. I'm really glad I got these, though I can understand if the price may put people off a bit. Hi Mark, I'm Italian and I wish to thank you for this video about Fabriano paper. Fabriano is one of our best products worldwide and we are proud of it. In Italy the Fabriano paper is so popular that we use to name as "Fabriano" any most used drawing paper! Thanks for showing also a Fabriano paper I didn't know, I normally use a cheaper one like Fabriano F4 or F2. A big hug. Looking forward your next video ;)

Watching this was like enjoying a yummy dessert! I love that you appreciate the tactile differences in each type of paper. The creative process is multi-sensory and giving yourself the gift of this bouquet 💐 is just wonderful! I think you are one person who would definitely appreciate the broad variety of these books and how they are _so_ different from both each other, as well as, other brands. It's just refreshing to use really good paper that's completely new to our workflow. I'm enjoying them, but most of all the tiny little HETRE Mignon. How interesting to get all those different types of paper, and they're just so cute and colorful too! Seems like many of them will only be able to be used on one side. Ooohhhh they’re so beautiful!! 🤩💜 As I was watching, my inner monologue was yelling “don’t crease the covers!” 😆🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m terrible at actually using my sketchbooks. I buy them and then “save them” for something really good. It was something my mom always said to me as a kid, and sadly I still hear it, ridiculous as it is. I’m still learning to use my supplies. 😣

Oh the things I hear in my head that my mom used to tell me! lol!! I'm a little sad in that I've been so busy with work, I've had little time to use these books the way I wanted to. I may end up bringing one to work and using it as my phone doodle book. That would be ideal for me and it would make me very happy! So, why not, right? lol! Cheers, Hearts Fire Garden!

Hey, thank you for the video. It was very informative and it was good to see the inside of the books; since all the shops in my country don't have photos of the inside. You can't always tell if it has lines or not especially when it's called a notebook lol

Tell us more about recycling and the impact on the environment. I though recycling was a good thing but from your video I understand there might be some issues with it?

This is something that I will be discussing in part three of this series. In short, recycling is very good for the environment, but it's kind of like cooking oil. The more you re-use the same oil to cook in, the more bitter and tainted it becomes. The more we recycle paper, the worse it can be due to chemical treatment and how in landfills, those chemicals seep into the earth.

@@MDCampbell Interesting. I wasn't aware of that. How about brushes? You know the discussion: natural vs synthetic. I was thinking it should be more on the terms of quantity. Making lots of synthetic brushes could be even more harmful for the environment than few natural ones. I personally take great vare when buying nee stuff and ask myself if I really need it or it's just a buying spree. Taking better care of things, repairing them when possible, buying good quality ones that will last longer.

Hi Mark, when watching your videos it's impossible to do anything on the side, as they're so nice and informative and I don't want to miss a second. Fabriano is my favourite watercolour paper to use and I didn't even know they made a full rainbow of papers like these. The textures look amazing and I bet it's possible to use their unique abilities creatively - like the transparency or texture. The brown ink looks so nice in the sketchbook and was a perfect choice. What do you think how the sketchbooks would work with liners or pencils? The Ecologica looks so pretty, that I want it as stationary for letters to use with fancy inks. :D Thanks for showing your beautiful findings! Have an awesome day!

Thank you so much, my friend. These are some beautiful papers! I think, overall, these would be fine with Micron pens, FC India Ink pens, or Copic Multiliners, though bleedthrough is likely, especially with heavier use. The same goes with Fineliner pens like Staedtler or Arteza. The tighter paper (Pergamentata) might not take them well, but for all the others, I'm sure they'd be fine. With pencils, most of these papers would welcome pencil, though with the Ecologica, a heavier graphite like a 3B or 4B, or an Ebony pencil, might smudge easily. I intended to do a pencil demo, but figured I'd just mention that they'd be fine. It was the pen and ink that drew my interest, most. @@MDCampbell Hi Mark, thanks for the insights and details. Pen and ink was an excellent choice for the demo, I just got curious about the possibilities and what they can be used with. The other day I remembered using a lot of pencil and charcoal for drawings and even ink during university and just wanted to go back a bit to the supplies, I haven't used in a long time. So I was wondering if these papers would be the fun point to start again. :) Thanks again for the great video! Have a great day!

These are interesting! I first discovered fabriano paper when I was abroad and had an urge to watercolour but didn’t bring a sketchbook with me. I found a fabriano watercolour paper pad in a local art shop and loved the texture of it. The paper would completely flatten out after the watercolour dried, and there was something about how the watercolour behaved on the paper. At that time I wasn’t aware of fabriano as a brand. I went back to the shop to get some extra paper pads to bring back home and they had none left. :))

@@MDCampbell If you really want to treat yourself, buy an Arches watercolor paper block. It's expensive, but very good. Since you like drawing with ink pen before watercolouring, I think you'd want to try the 'hot pressed' variety ;-) I have both the cold and hot pressed ones and they come in as $2 per sheet, but I can use them on both sides and (for now) never have disappointed me. BTW I don't own Arches stocks ;-)

@@PaulaBean oh my, I have far too many blocks of Arches than I'll probably ever use. I always buy them when they go on sale! lol! I also have a few other blocks, like Legion Stonehenge, Langton Prestige, and Montval. I really need to stop buying paper and pads. I may have a problem! hehe!! Thank you again! Beautiful! You should go to Fabriano! I taught a class there some years ago. The museum is beautiful and they let us use the space. We were able to rake a class w master paper maker in the old equipment.

The past 3 years I haven't been buying sketchbooks, I learned how to make my own, I learned a lot about different papers, sketchbook sizes, cover colors, feel that I prefer etc. It takes me about 6 hours to make one and price wise is not worth selling. But I make them for myself or as gifts to other friend artists. I suggest anyone who has some free time to at least try bookbinding once it's really worth it.

Hey Mark, so glad that you are showcasing these books. I love my Fabriano Studio Paper, although it is not 100% cotton I still enjoy it. What is your favorite student or bargain friendly paper to use?

Thank you so much, Dawn! After years and years of using all kinds of paper, I tend not to be too picky when it comes to student grade or general sketchbooks and paper. I have the Canson XL, Strathmore 200-400 series, and lots of others. My favorite books are the Hand•Book journals because they just do what I like and they're not super expensive. Some people don't like them, which I understand, but for me, they're it. Hoping you are all well on your end! ~ Mark

Campbell that's cool. I have got into binding my own sketchbooks together. So I haven't bought a sketchbook since 2019. I buy the paper I want to use and I bind them together, put on cover and there I have a sketchbook; with the paper I want and the amount of pages I want. I highly recommend try book binding someday, you are one of my RU-vid teachers, stay inspirational.

Yes I love Fabriano too, but don't forget "sustainable" paper plantations rip out the rainforests first to grow the plantation paper trees.

These books are definitely portable, so hopefully I'll be able to visit coffee shops and actually sit down, again, so I can draw or write. My art room is getting really boring! lol! :)

@@MDCampbell This week in Texas has been ruff and an eye opener. I think we are all looking forward to getting out, doing things and going places. Now if we can just remember how to behave. 🥴 Take care and I am very happy to see you ordered some special items for you to enjoy. Here we even have a new HEB grocery. We have never been in one, they are large stores and it will be good to check it and enjoy a taste of San Antonio. We also have the new Buddy Holly preforming arts center. I never thought they would build something so grand in West Texas. I can’t wait to see it. It’s multi level, two theaters, rooms for various arts,restaurant etc.

@@essietangle9931 my heart goes out to the folks in Texas as we understand your situation only too well in New England. We were hit with three stormfronts in two days, which meant shoveling, then shoveling, then shoveling, then shoveling more. Last week, it was only two stormfronts. lol! We're used to it in MA, but it never gets easy. I can't even imagine how the cold might affect people in your area. I hope you're all doing okay, and by the sound of it, you've got some wonderful things to do outside the home. I envy that! Despite braving a restaurant or two over the past few months, most of our time is here at home. Luckily, all our kids are away, so there's not a lot of pressure to cook, clean, etc. This summer will be a real test! lol!!! Stay safe and enjoy that HEB store! It sounds fabulous!
