Facet joints in your spine are the ones that help make your back more flexible. They are the small joints that help you bend and twist. When they are inflamed or not working correctly, you can have a lot of back pain. These stretches and exercises will hopefully help. First, lie on your back with your knees bent. Starting with a single knee to chest stretch, bend one knee and bring your leg up to your chest as far as you comfortably can. Hold this for 30 seconds and do it three times on each side.
The next stretch is called the pelvic tilt. You will roll back onto your back with your knees bent. You want to imagine pushing your belly button into the ground, or push your back flat onto the ground like you are squishing something. You can put your hand under the curve of your back, and try to push your back into your hand. Hold these for about 3-5 seconds.
Now you will do bridging. Push your bottom up off the ground, but try to do this slowly, and do one segment of your back at a time curling upward. Then slowly go down the same way, one segment at a time.
Turn over onto all fours, and then go into the child’s pose. You want to sit down onto your feet. Bow down to the ground and stretch your arms as far forward as you can. This is a great stretch for your mid back and shoulders. You can hold it for 30 seconds up to a minute.
Come back up on your hands and knees in a quadruped position or all fours. Try to keep your back straight like a tabletop, and try to keep your neck in a neutral position so you don't strain anything. Now lift one arm up and bring in straight forward. Alternate your arms, doing 10 on each side. If that is easy, then do the same thing with your legs, and alternate each side 10 times. If it is still easy, then lift your opposite arm and leg and the same time.
The last stretch will be a cat stretch. The cat stretch is performed by tucking your chin in and arching your back. You can hold this for 30 seconds and do it three times.

I have had facet joint syndrome for years now, it is so bad that i can't walk very far at all, the pain just stops me in my tracks. will these exercises help me at all

Wow, this is great I have had physical therapist and a chiropractor advise me to do exercise for pain and strength. And none of the moves you show, other than "child's pose", was taught to me ,until today! A facet problem that started over 3 years ago and after 1 session ,instant relief!! this is going to be part of my daily routine. I cannot express how grateful I am, Dr. Jo!!! Lifesaver!

I've been waiting 3 years for this video. I didn't think to search for anything besides "anterior pelvic tilt" type searches. The "fake laugh" que has already proven to be a game-changer. Thank you for your help getting out of this tiring cycle of pain.

I had a microdiscectomy in november 2018 and my pain was virtually cured, around a month ago i started swimming, not realising that keeping my head above the water all time is awful for facet joints, i woke up last saturday and i could barely walk, instant back ache/pain out of nowhere, ive been in such a state so i searched on youtube, did these exercises, instant relief and cure, life saver, thankyou so so much. Oh and squats also work wonders.

Thanks JO! I am a LONG TIME sufferer of facet joint pain:( One thing I find soothing, when you are doing the cat stretches, shift backwards, bringing your bottom to heels, like going into child's pose, but with the spine in the cat stretch is very comforting. I love this video, thanks for making it.

Time stamp 3:00 This particular stretch was the magic key for me! I’ve not seen this stretch included in other videos and certainly haven’t had other doctors suggest a rotation stretch with a facet joint issue. Wonderful wonderful! Thank you so much ! ❤️I was in agonizing searing pain a day ago.

So in December of 2019, I suffered an annular tear with a bulging disc to 3to4 mm in my l5 s1 in the first 5 to 6 months. I did a lot of Cobra poses to try to push back the bulge; however, over the last two months, I've been feeling a weird back pain directly in my spine, and it hurts to do the Cobra pose. The pain intensifies when I lean. Do you think this is a facet joint issue?

Hi all, I had a medial brach chain nerve block procedure around 4 months ago. It's worked well to be fair, just wondering if there are any specific exercises, physio I could be doing to assist it? I can't seem to find anything specific to the procedure anywhere. Thanks

Hi Dr.Jo, I had RFA on my facet joints last Wednesday. Just started today to try and stretch and found your program. I find the bridge hard as my back is still sore. My groins and hips still have a lot of nerve pain. Any stretches that may help this too! Thanks for a very easy to follow program.

You're welcome. The pelvic tilts should really help with that. If the bridging is hard, I would hold off on that now, and do the ones you feel comfortable with. Most likely after you do them for a day or two, you can try again, and it might be better. Good luck.

This sure felt good! At the end of the program we did cat, but no cow. Is the cow direction tough on facets? Is the cat direction bad for osteoporosis since it is a forward bend.?

Thank you so much. Even though this is a video from 7 years ago, these exercises saved me. Facet arthropathy is different than disc herniation. Twisting at the waist and bending backwards is not good for facet joints. Especially helpful are the bridge and twist in upper back, shoulder. This is sooo good!! I can walk without pain after these exercises.

My back cracks when I start doing these exercises (knee to chest). It only cracks once, is slightly painful when it does and then starts feeling better. I can finish the exercises without pain or any problem. Is there anything to be concerned about?

Hello Dr. Jo, My doctor suggested that I use this video to relieve pain and strengthen the facet joints. I think it's great, however, I had bilateral knee replacement surgery and kneeling on the floor is very uncomfortable. Do you have any suggestions so I can do these exercises without any discomfort to my knees? Thanks!

Thanks. Taking a towel and making a round shape like a donut sometimes helps. Your knee goes in the hole, but with the roll, the knee doesn't actually have much pressure on it. Sometimes kneeling on pillows or using something called yoga jellies (or something similar) helps reduce the pressure: amzn.to/2z8wV0Z (affiliate link)

hey jo, i have OA in both knees from years of hard court tennis, have had treatment this past year with injections and physio to build up my muscles. i do the knee pull ups and the flattening of the back excercises in the 1st half of the vid, would you say that these could help knees? i truly believe that these have certainly helped my situation...

I was diagnosed with suspicious par stress fracture at L5 on right side according to my lumber MRI REPORTS. After 3 months of rest it is healed completely according to my current lumber ct scan reports. Overall reports are normal including all the disc height , canal, as well as no facet joint arthopathy is not there. But the problem now is that i have right side lower back pain when i over extend my spine. (while doing any bodybuilding back muscle posing ) specially it feels like the pain is in the bone or joint. Please help sir i am very much tensed about it. I used to do bodybuilding and want to continue with it 🙏🏻 . . One thing i would like to mention is that the pain was gone after 3 month of inactivity at my lower back but i did extreme yoga streching and after than i am experiencing lower back pain again on my right side while extension but also i did my lumber ct scan after this only. So no abnormalities revealed please do reply 🙏🏻

Thank you so much. I haven't been able to move much for a couple of weeks. Normally if I want to do any bending over and have a shower, I can't until the afternoon. I found your video this morning and it's only 9:30am and I can already bend overand pick things up from the floor and could even put my own shoes on and tie the laces. Brilliant. I just can't do the bridge exercise. Should I keep trying it or skip it for a week or two? I can't wait to go back to my physio and show him your stretches. Thanks again

My mri showed,mild facet joint hypertrophy,mild diffuse disc bulging at L4-5, mild central disc at L5-S1, i have pain down the back of my leg, will these exercises help?

Hi Dr Jo! Really love the vids! An x ray showed lower lumbar facet arhtropathy in my back. Can this cause hip, glute, Sciatic pain? The reason I ask is that I have that type of pain, but not as much in my back. Any thoughts? Thanks again!

Thanks! Usually facet pain is more to the front of the thigh, but it can cause pain in those areas and not the back. Good luck.

Just finished my first set. Pelvic tilts and bridges slightly painful but not intolerable. Overall I would say feeling a little better. Getting on the treadmill and plan on doing another set later today. I am hopeful and encouraged that this will help. Haven't been able to work for a couple days......

Hi doctor Jo I just got diagnosed with facet joint syndrome and scoliosis but it has been a few years and before that the doctor didn’t checked me proper and said I have nothing wrong with my back just worried it’s too late to cure 😢

Hello doctor Are these stretches helpful or safe for bulging disc too bcaz I have bulging discs and facet joints syndromes at the same level l4 l5 and l5 s1. The bulging discs compress thecall sac, traversing nerve root and recess bilateral?

thank you so much for the video! I am 25 and I have facet joint syndrome. My doctor advised me to do injection, I did one time that helped me around 40 percent. He recommends me to do other 2 injections. Do you think it is better to treat this disease with physical exercises for young people than injections? Thank for your advice in advance!

Hi Doctor Jo. I damaged my facets doing strongman training some years ago. I still go to the gym and lifts weights but every now and again, my joints spasm and I'm left in agony until my oesteopath fixes me. Obviously i want to avoid spasm attacks occuring but i do not want to give up lifting weights. Does this routine strengthen the core around the facets (to protect them) and how often should i perform this routine? Any other advice is welcome too. Great channel btw 😁

It does, but you might need something a little more after doing this for a few weeks every day, 1-2 times a day. Do you have a Swiss (therapy/stability) ball? Those can be a great way to strengthen the core in a low impact way.

Hi Mike. Just recently injured my lumbar facet joints due to moving around a 350 lbs. treadmill into the corner of my room smh. Now I'm stuck with a new treadmill that I can't use in fear of causing more damage...lol the irony. Anyways, I was curious how long it took for your facet joints to heal after you damaged them?

Hi Dr Jo would yoga standing balance poses irritate my left lower back facet joint? I have been doing a yoga program and up to now it’s been ok however I have noticed the last two weeks or so it aches everyday and balance poses have been introduced into the programme so I am wondering if it’s these balance poses? I would appreciate your guidance. I have started today to do your stretches in your video so hopefully these will help. Thank you

You're welcome. I hope they help too. Unfortunately, I don't know what it could be from since I can't evaluate you, but it's possible your back is compensating for some other muscles weaknesses during the balance poses.

I have pain around L1 when bending forward. Physio thinks possibly facet joint inflammation. Would these stretches help me? Thanks

Hello dr. Joe I have just had my third session of cortisone into my lumbar facets, both sides, I am on the waiting list for knee surgery are there modifications to the exercises in this video,that require being on hands and knees, which would make them possible for me to do?

Do you have a swiss/therapy ball? That would prevent you from having to get down on the floor at all.

You're welcome. Mainly, just let pain be your guide, and avoid extreme movements into extension (bending backwards).

How can I check that I have facet joint or disc pain? I had slip discs in the past(L4,5,S1) but eventually developed facet joint pain on the same side. I do these exercises but I get pain reduction also from doing back extension.

Usually facet joint syndrome pain will not radiate past the knee, but that is not always the case, and the symptoms can present like a herniated disc, so it can be tough to differentiate the two. However, back extension usually will increase pain and symptoms with FJS, but relieve herniated disc pain.

I have a lower back pain when standing up from a sitting position. It usually takes a minute or two to walk it out. Does this look like a facet joint problem or it's something else ?

Thank you, Dr. Jo. Are these safe for mild lumbar Retrolisthesis? The current status is stabilized through advanced medical massage at no pain or tension within time limits. Building endurance is needed.

I was told I has facet joint syndrome and I feel the pain in my lower back.the last exercise you did which is the cat stretch I felt pain more when I did the exercise.hope it won't be harmful in any way to my back

It shouldn't be, but if you have pain I wouldn't recommend doing it without talking with a physical therapist in person. Good luck.

Would losing some weight also help? I have been having terrible pain and was finally diagnosed (after 3 years and 10 doctors) with facet syndrome. I am really desperate for relief, mine radiates into my left shoulder

I just had an MRI and it says There is mild facet arthropathy at L5-S1 will these exercises be okay for this? I also do pelvic floor exercises every day for the tight pelvic floor.

My lower spine feels like it shifts or moves when I lie down with my legs raised on pillows,what’s the possible explanation for this? I have a central disc protrusion at l5 s1, disc bulge at l4 L5 with facet hypertrophy and ligamentum flavum hypertrophy and stable narrowing of the left lateral recess at this level touching the L5 traversing nerve root. Is my “spine shift” caused by the disc protrusion or the facet issues??
