In this training mission we enter North Korean airspace to target the anti aircraft assets escorting a headquarters battalion road column. A follow on flight of A10's will deal with the remaining vehicles. This gives us the opportunity to learn more about the AGM65 Maverick missile, and in particular the D variant. We will first boresight the missiles using DD963 Spruance as a reference point before crossing the coast, and after a flight through a valley at low level we will enter a plateau, locate the column, identify the ZSU 23-4's escorting it, and destroy them with accurately placed missiles.
TO DESIGNATE ZSU's: Designate with the TGP using TMS Up to command Point Track. HANDOFF IN PROGRESS should appear on the WPN page, and a C appears over the weapon station number. Switch to the next Maverick with the MSL STEP button and repeat the process. With a steady pointing cross the Mavericks are ready to be fired.
NOTE: To avoid the TGP handoff fail error during boresighting you may designate the target using the TGP prior to uncaging the Maverick. You may also adjust the magnification level on the TGP's NARO display using the manual range knob, which is ALT+F3 and ALT+F4 by default.

Thank you Sir !!I've been "out of the saddle" for a long time and have found many, many upgrades to BMS .Although I've been with Falcon, (SP2 & 3, Open Falcon, and helped with the BETA testing of BMS) since 1999 and have over 5000 hours in the pit, the changes during the last year have made me a novis again.You have done a great job putting these videos together and I truly appreciate your efforts ...Many thanks !!

Great video. I really appreciate how you explain what you're going to do, highlight the buttons to press, and then do it in real time. Very easy to understand as opposed to "then you hit [acronym salad that means nothing to new users] *click click click click* and you're done!"

Another excellent video! I had 3 fails in a row in this mission, then I watched YOURS. Turned out even though I was turning on the Auto power a few times, I think I was just too long in Freeze mode, and the power on the Mavs ran out. Christmas cookies got me the last time...lol

Thanks Supanova for explaining the Maverick Fault issue. I've been fighting with the TGP, trying to get it to send the target data to the weapon. I guess for $110K USD a missile, its only accurate if you configure it correctly. And I agree, Awesome Tutorial ! The step by step process was great.

Great video’s as always so thank you. I wish you would include more HOTAS commands. E.g. on the TGP TMS-Left cycles between WHOT-BHOT, double press TMS-Left will cycle between TV and IR mode, while double press TMS-Right will cycle the laser pointer between L-IR-BOTH. Pinky button on the stick toggles field of view. The whole point of HOTAS is to keep your hands on the controls as much as possible without pressing buttons on the instrument panels. Tip 1: after getting avionics fault due to TGP Handoff Fail you press MASTER CAUTION RESET, F-ACK, TEST, CLR which is 4 actions. If you select TEST page and then press CLR (only 2 actions) the MASTER CAUTION and PILOT FAULT LIST will also clear. OR you could quick boresight as in your other video which eliminates the handoff fail message. Tip 2: when slewing TGP cursors and they are too sensitive, press TMS-Right to enter area mode to ground-stabilise the TGP and slewing will be less sensitive so you can fine tune cursors.

Your videos are great! A tip for the avionics fault: Point track the TGP first, then open the WPN page and carry out the procedure, this should result in no errors. As the WPN page isn't up, the TGP doesn't try to hand off. I'm not sure if this is realistic, but at least you won't have clear up the cautions. I also usually boresight both stations, then hand off to both stations to save time (steps AABB instead of AB, reset, AB). I'm not sure wether this is an accepted procedure though, or if it in real life could cause any issues.

Hey man, I really love your videos. I love how you are very specific about each step. For this one though, I wish you would have included how to designate each target separately to each Maverick simultaneously
@supanova88
@supanova88 8 лет назад
+David Collins I would have liked to have done that. The problem was it's not easy spotting the ZSU's in that situation. To do that right might have taken quite a few attempts, and getting into that position is quite time consuming. I might still have been working on the video now. ;)
@supanova88
@supanova88 7 лет назад
***** I used it to find and designate the targets, but I wasn't comfortable with that rough and ready approach to documenting how the process works. That training scenario suffers from how difficult it is to spot targets.

Supanova, can the "A" and "B" variants be boresighted, or are they strictly limited to employment in VIS and BORE modes. I'm not seeing any "Handoff in progress" or "C" confirmations when I go through the Boresighting process with the "A" or "B".

How did you acquire two targets simultaneously? Is it just a matter of handing off one to one mav, selecting another mav and handing off another target? Thanks

Designate with the TGP using TMS Up to command Point Track. HANDOFF IN PROGRESS should appear on the WPN page, and a C appears over the weapon station number. Switch to the next Maverick with the MSL STEP button and repeat the process. With a steady pointing cross the Mavericks are ready to be fired. Excellent video as usual, but I don't see how you found the AAA batteries to target. Did you initially designate them by steerpoint via the map?
@supanova88
@supanova88 6 лет назад
Finding targets in that training mission was made more difficult when trees were added. You have to know the general area they're in and then search with the TGP.

I've had an issue slaving my Maverick's to my FCR after manually slewing them around. I recall TMS down is supposed to slave the missile back to the FCR but when I hit TMS down now the camera seems to still be ground-stabilized at the point I was looking at previously? Any advice is appreciated.
@supanova88
@supanova88 8 лет назад
TMS down will only break the target lock. If you're manually slewing the Maverick and then want to use the TGP you would then swap SOI to the TGP.
@firepower01

supanova I want to slave the Maverick's camera back to the FCR though. Is there a way to do that once you've started to manually slew the camera?

TMS down only slaves tgt pod to fcr, as far as im aware you cant slave mavs to the fcr.

How would you conduct boresighting if a reference point (i.e. the destroyer in this case) wasn't available? Is it impossible to do so?
@supanova88
@supanova88 7 лет назад
You need to find a good visual reference that you can lock onto. Without the ship in this instance you would have to go inland and find one.

Why not just lockon using the FCR? Wouldn't it be hard to find a target without the FCR?

You can use whichever tool is most appropriate for the circumstances. You can also combine tools to achieve the overall aim.
@Planehazza

How are you handing off two targets? I'm doing something wrong in that both mine are hitting the same target.
@supanova88
@supanova88 7 лет назад
Try TMS Up to lock the first target, fire the missile, TMS Down to cancel, then move to the second target and lock that up with TMS Up. I would have to look at the scenario again but TMS Up alone should work for both targets. You have to make sure you have a good lock on both targets.
@Planehazza
@Planehazza 7 лет назад
Thanks. What I wanted to do was handoff two targets to two 65Ds, and set the ripple count to 2. I wanted both to track different targets. What I think I was doing wrong was not handing them off correctly. I managed last night to get two off from one pickle and have them track and hit two targets. What I think I did differently was to handoff from TGP with TMS up (point lock), then hard lock the Mav on WPN, then MSL STEP. I broke lock on TGP, slewed to the second target and did a TMS up (point) a second time. I could see TD1 and TD2 in the HUD after I did that. I hope that makes sense.
@supanova88
@supanova88 7 лет назад
I can't recall the procedure I followed, but I think I just locked them up with TMS Up. As long as they're correctly boresighted that should work, but I'd have to go back over it to test the procedure.

There is a simpler boresighting method, but having so many potential roles it does have bit more complexity.
@cherminatorDR
@cherminatorDR 8 лет назад
I think I missed that last step during boresighting - deselecting the target - and when I got to the objective, the missiles tracked to the steerpoint, instead of the shilkas.
@supanova88
@supanova88 8 лет назад
The really difficult part is finding the correct targets and locking them up in time. Those Shilkas are not easy to spot at low level and at speed.
@cherminatorDR
@cherminatorDR 8 лет назад
supanova I flew the version with good weather, so that part wasn't that hard - I think they're slightly hotter than the trucks. It the missile guidance that kept hitting the steerpoint and not where I was telling them to. But your video really helped - turned out I didn't TMS down after boresighting. Now, if only I could figure out the A-10!

AGM65 boresighting is covered in TO-BMS1F-16CM-34-1-1, AGM-65D/G Missile Boresight Procedures, page 165. How you boresight is dependant on the equipment carried.

Has anyone flying with the Thrustmaster Cougar gotten the cursor button on the throttle to work, to actually move the radar cursor? If so, how'd you do it?
@supanova88
@supanova88 7 лет назад
I don't have a cougar, but I presume it does work as you described. Does it not work at all, or just in certain circumstances, or certain systems? The BMS forum has quite a few Cougar users, so that would be the best place to ask for a thorough answer.
@tommyzDad
@tommyzDad 7 лет назад
Well I know the button itself works, as I mapped it to roll and pitch as a test, but I'll be damned if I can't figure out why it doesn't move the cursor. I'll try the DMS Forum again, trying other search terms, hoping to get a more focused hit.
@supanova88

The only other thing I can suggest is look at the output on the setup screen when using the shifted arrow keys, then try the buttons to check they match.

Thanks, Austin, but I found the solution not long after posting--I just had to search a little bit harder. I wonder though, have you used the Cougar with (vanilla) Falcon 4.0? I've been using Foxy to get the stick and throttle to work with it, but it's been hit or miss: I get the speedbrakes to open, but then trim doesn't work, or vice-versa.

At 7:42 when uncaging missile, my right MFD doesn't change from the blank WPN screen. I've followed each instruction step by step but something is missing. Can't continue on because I can't get a missile view on the right MFD no matter what I click on or type. Guess it's back to the -1 and -34-1-1 **update** watched another vid that doesn't setup the auto powerup West of steer5 and I'm getting further. One month into learning BMS and I feel like I only know 5% of the required knowledge. This ain't your gran'dad's FA18 Hornet game.

You have to align the sensors, which can be done on the ground. In BMS you'd typically do that en route to the target.
