That's kind of cool how intimate falconers of the past were. I'd never think they'd bring animals to the dinner table. It adds a social aspect that reinforces some ideas I've seen in entertainment that I always figured was just part of the fantasy, but might actually be based on some common practice.
When I started falconry back in the late sixties, I didn't really notice where other falconers were holding their birds. I just automatically put them on my left hand because I needed my right hand to do all the other functions. So you pretty much explain it spot on, good job, Ben. OSH :-)
Thanks for the videos you post. All of them have great information and especially this one because I have a horse and want to lean into the experience of “horseback falconry”. Can’t wait for the next video!
Good one Ben ! I'm a southpaw and carry on my right. My theory on the Mongolian and Kazakh eagle hunters is close to yours. Easier to swing an eagle over the saddle with right. As always. Great information !
I'm actually the only person in my family that's right handed. My grandparents and my parents are left handed, so that makes my situation more unique. It was only common-sense to me that a Falconer would use his/her left hand for the sport because all of our everyday tasks are done with the right hand. Eating, working, and turning door knobs are all right-handed activities! I had a plush doll, it was a Red Tailed Hawk doll. I actually used a cooking glove on my left hand to hold the doll, I know that seems silly but that's the only glove I had at the time. But I held it in my hand for probably at least 6 hours in a day! It was long enough that I just wanted to see how long I could do it nonstop! It was an idea I had to get me 1 step closer to becoming a Falconer, which hasn't yet happened yet but I'm getting there!
Ben, love the channel, I’m a brand new falconry from Alabama, actually passed my test last week. I’m 55 years old and have been hunting for as long as I can remember, but I only became interested in falconry over the past couple years. I had a sponsor long before I ever took the test, we’ve been hunting together for a couple seasons already. I value his opinion but I’m also the type of guy that likes to listen to a lot of different very knowledgeable people, especially when it comes to equipment and training. i heard once that in europe the bird was carryed left cause you needed your right arm to take your sword with in battle. the falconer could be used as a messenger from one falconer to another one. But if he was attacked he still had is right hand free to defend himself. i dont know if thats any good reason at all or that it is even real. it sounds logical though.
Yo uso las dos manos y la verdad que me gusta más la derecha cuando voy a aplicar el awase, es más preciso el movimiento. Y también puedo conducir un auto con el Halcón en la derecha y usar la mano izquierda para el volante. Hoy no es una generalidad la mano izquierda en cetrería, antes si puesto que saludar con la mano izquierda no es muy grato. Lo veo como una tradición más que algo práctico.

Genghis Khan brought Falconry most of the Way across the world with his crusade and he would always have his soldiers trained in Falconry so having a left-handed glove meant that you always had your right hand to draw your sword and also being right-hand-dominant for the most part it meant that you had your right hand if you are riding a horse to steer rains 👍🏼
Metrzan had my computer crash a while back and for some time now have been stuck with older equipment and really bad editing software. Working to get that remedied so I can up the production value.
