This painting was accomplished using transparent watercolors on a quarter sheet ( 11” x 15”) of 140 lb cold press Lanaquarelle watercolor paper. Brushes used: Silver Black Velvet Jumbo Round small, Black Gold Quill Series 311, Escoda Reserva. The colors used were Royal Blue, Quinacridone Coral, Alizarin Crimson, Quinacridone Gold, Yellow Ochre, and Sap Green . I also used a very fine mist spray bottle made by Atelier. If you learned from and enjoyed this demonstration be sure to like, subscribe, and turn on your post notifications. I’m often asked questions about the materials and equipment I use in my painting process. To make this information readily available, I’ve posted a comprehensive list on the studio page of my website. The list details the materials that I use most often. Here is the link to my studio page. rsurowiczart.co... Also, don't forget to visit my website and follow me on Facebook and Twitter. Thanks for watching!

I love this technique! I am going to try this and see what I get! Thanks for all the details, it really helps to understand what you are doing and why you are doing it!❤

I've just completed my own version of this, following along with your tutorial, and I am absolutely delighted with the result! I have been working on a series of small negative watercolour paintings recently, and this final one is the best yet! I love your technique and the ethereal results you get. Definitely something to pursue further! Thank you so much. New subscriber!

It is incredibly generous of you to share your style and techniques to such a wide audience. I guess I might jealously guard the same if it were my work. So thank you. You're a great teacher.

Dear Rick, I just wanted to thank you so very much for your teaching! I am progressing largely thanks to you! I can’t believe that I once asked you to do a video on composition! Now that I am really watching with both my eyes AND ears, I hear that your dialogue is full of composition! Sorry, you must have rolled your eyes and wondered “how do I get through to these people!” I’ve had a great career, raised a child who is a doll, and now at almost 70 have the leisure and pleasure to do things that make me happy! Thank you for making this time fabulous!

I tried this technique, and came up with a very interesting painting! I learned a lot and see I want to work more on my composition. With this kind of painting it’s hard to know when it is done.

I enjoyed both the videos for different reasons. The narrated one is especially helpful, but having the other "fast track" one is great as a review to really nail down what I've learned. Thank you for taking the trouble to provide both.

I watch a lot of demos. I appreciate the way you describe your process. Thank you for being so open and transparent (no pun). Am I understanding correctly that you use royal blue in place of ultramarine? If so, why? Again thank you.
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 6 лет назад
Hi Robin, Thanks for your comments! I use both Royal Blue and Ultramarine blue. Royal Blue is Holbein's version of the pigment PB60. Other manufacturers call their version Indanthrene blue or Delft Blue. It's a very dark value. I often mix it with reds or greens to get dark values. I still use Ultramarine blue often as a compliment to Burnt Sienna. I've listed the colors currently on my palette and the frequency of use on the "Studio" page of my website. If you use this link and go to the bottom of the page, you will find the listing. rsurowiczart.com/studio/

Rick: I am thoroughly enjoying your tutorials and instruction. They are very helpful and you are very generous. I wish I could actually take a class from you. What do you tape your paper to when you're painting? and what do you use to set the angle of your board/paper? thanks much. Mary M from MN
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 5 лет назад
Hi Mary, I tape it to "Gatorboard". Here is a link to my the studio page on my website where I list all my materials. If you click on the photo labeled "Accessories", you will find it listed there. If you click on it's image, it will take you to a source page that describes it. rsurowiczart.com/studio/ . I actually use a foam laptop, lap desk, to prop up my board. You can use a foam block. 2 1/2 - 3 ".

Amazing! You scared me with that wash 26 min in but you are masterful with your thought process. What degree of a tilt do you paint at?
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 6 лет назад
Thanks Eunice! Sometimes a final wash can help bring the composition together. I normally work at about a 20 degree angle.

Truly we are so spoiled by quaint New England scenes I am glad you got to see it as autumn took hold of our landscapes. My grandparents and Aunt and Uncle lived near the PA and OH line and then for my years of trucking I rode endless hours through OH and spent nights on the floor of rest areas when they shut the road down to clear snow. The good old days :)

About the Dynasty Black Gold Quill Brush 311 what size number is the medium brush please ? I see on the photo it has 3 zeros which would be the smallest brush.
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 6 лет назад
Hi Claire, The 3x0 (000) Black Gold quill is the brush that I use. It's sized differently than most brushes. I consider it a medium brush with a fine point. Holds a lot of water but is very good for detail. As a comparison I use Escoda Reserva Sables. I have sizes 4 through 14. I consider my 4 a small, but not tiny brush, size 8 a medium brush, and 14 a large round. My 3x0 quill is the size of the Escoda 8, I have a quill 0 which is the size of the escoda 12, and the quill 4 is the size of the Escoda 14 (1/2 inch round, a large round brush) Normally a triple zero brush is very tiny, that's not the case with the quill 311 series. It falls about the middle in size for most brush series. I have never actually used the size 0 or 4 Quill brushes I have.
