Beautiful! I like to think of your style as "deliberately loose". Neither controlled, nor out of control. Instead, you work WITH the watercolor, allowing all its best qualities to shine through. Your website says you tried other mediums before settling on w/c. But really, I think watercolor is lucky to have found YOU!

I find it astonishing that you can hold this pattern in your mind. I can see the pattern that each color makes: the oranges, the purples, greens and blues. Delightful.

I just found your videos on RU-vid. I love your method. I'm getting back to watercolor after a few years away. You are a great teacher. Thank you so very much for posting these tutorials. I've taken several watercolor classes over the years and I've learned more from your videos than all of them put together. Thanks again.

I really enjoy your negative painting techniques! I have been working on a composition made up of 2 unframed but sealed 11x14 horizontally split watercolor paintings. I plan to use a little negative technique on the edges and foreground. I really paid attention to how you use this in your paintings. I hope that it doesn't look over processed because I admittedly love detail also. Thank you very much Rick.

I just found you on RU-vid, and what an inspiration you will be for me! I joined a college extension class at the senior center in watercolor, after oil painting for many years. This explanation video introduced me to new ways of working in the medium, and I want to thank you for sharing your ideas.

I am becoming more interested in the end results of the beautiful finish one can achieve following your techniques whilst creating such beautiful loose watercolours I wish though that one could see more detail whilst you are creating those strokes that make the style what it is !

Thank you Yvonne ! I appreciate your comments and feedback. I continue to work on the publishing of my videos. I'd like to get more detail, however, to do that I'll need to upgrade the technology of my equipment.

Have you ever started your "roadmap" full on wet-in-wet?
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 3 года назад
Hi Doug, I have, but usually there are shapes I want to cut around and leave hard edges. Most often I start out wet on dry and transition into some wet on wet.

How do you keep the white areas white? I love this negative paint but very new to it. Thank you
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 6 лет назад
Sometimes I use masking, but not in this painting. When I put my initial wash on, I make sure to leave some larger areas of white. I start working dry on wet, so I have more control than if I was working wet into wet. I gradually build up layers of wash painting around those areas where I want pure white or even light areas.

Your paintings are so complex! How do you not overwork your paintings? It is hard to stop most of the time..
@RickSurowiczWatercolor
@RickSurowiczWatercolor 4 месяца назад
I build this type of painting in three stages working from light values and large shapes to middle values and smaller shapes to darkest vales and detail.

@@RickSurowiczWatercolor Thanks for the reply! I love how you creat value with the colors rather than with grey tones.
