It's been a while since we've shown you our front and back yards in one tour video, so we wanted to share all the progression our yard has made! Our food forest is still in its infancy; none of the fruit trees in our backyard are more than 2 years old! We are always adding to it, changing things around, and coming up with new ideas on how to better utilize our space. Come check out what we're growing!
Are you new to gardening? What food are you most interested in growing? Let us know in the comments!
Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @GreeniesGarden!
If you want happiness, plant something! We hope everyone has an AWESOME day! For consultations, raised beds, or tree planting/feeding services, please check us out at greeniedigs.com.

I am so inspired by your natural wisdom to create a natural garden despite the fact the weather can be extreme in Arizona. As you both said, you can create a micro-climate by combining right trees in the north side, south side... I am doing the same in South Texas. My bigger trees are protecting other trees (such as avocado trees) that could not stand the summer sunlight by themselves here. Great job!

Isn't it amazing what a single shade tree can do to create a microclimate? So cool you're doing the same!!

on the papaya trim off a few rows of the bottom leaves next spring and it will boost the growth a lot. the roots support all of those leaves, which leaves do help give the plant energy but they also take nutrients. the roots will take up only the nutrients to support how many leaves the tree has, so removing the bottom leaves makes the tree concentrate the nutrients.

So jealous of your moringa trees! Mine just don't seem to grow as quickly and vigorously as yours do. Seeing your soursop doing well is great too! The California rare fruit growers told me that soursop will die here in California. I have a 9 foot one in my back yard so if it gives me fruit I'm going to have to email them back and tell them they're wrong!
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
Ours have all gotten afternoon shade because of their proximity to the block wall, are yours in full sun or full shade? That could make a difference. Wow best of luck with your soursop!!

Brandon and Alyssa, great video! You guys have come a long ways. Please keep up the post on your soursop tree, we have a 3 foot one that I haven’t planted in the ground yet, concerned that it won’t do well this winter. The one you have in your yard is it on a west facing wall? I Couldn’t see to much about what kind of micro climate you have created for it, My wife from China and she misses a lot of these fruits that she grew up with, thank you guys for the inspiration and the motivation, we just finally were able to cover the backyard with at least a foot and a half of wood mulch, will be continuing with that endeavor as were able to appropriate the Wood Chips, Thanks, Matt & Ming Laveen, AZ
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
Hi Matt & Ming! Our soursop is on our southern wall, facing north, so it gets a lot of heat from the wall behind it in the winter. It's under a moringa and an ornamental plum for shade in the summer. We'll keep you posted! Congrats on the wood chips, that's an important step! Keep us updated! :D

if you are growing mamey sapote for fruit you better keep it in greenhouse. It takes up to 2 years for fruit to ripen. Tree will drop all fruit once it is exposed to temps below 40. It is a struggle even in SoCal zone 10. Also when you get soursop to produce flowers pollinate it when temp is below 85 and at least 50% humidity. it is really finicky about pollination conditions.
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 6 лет назад
Yeah we might just be growing these trees for their foliage then :D Thanks for the good info!
@greenblood3708

you might want to try Pace or Veijo mamey vars. They are cold hardy and supposedly can hold fruit down to 30. I just replaced my magana with Viejo. btw, What var is your Soursop? Are you acidifying its soil?

How does neem oil work? It reduces insect feeding and acts as a repellent. It also interferes with insect hormone systems, making it harder for insects to grow and lay eggs. Azadirachtin can also repel and reduce the feeding of nematodes. Other components of neem oil kill insects by hindering their ability to feed.

"Warning, Warning Dr. Smith" Talk to the very top nurseries...do not overwater that Tipuana Tipu ! I lost one as well...gorgeous tree...yellow blooms were always everywhere throughout the ...grew like a weed for ~5 yrs (with it being watered regularly by a surrounding deep drip line...and the distant roots by a sprinkler)...it did get hit by lightening, but several limbs also snapped in heavy winds ! It is a continuous problem with Tipu's--especially the ones allowed to grow the fastest...just an fyi...sometimes called the Yellow Jacaranda, my large purple Jacaranda would go off throughout the month of April, only to be followed by the Tipu for a full month of yellow blooms ! I did absolutely love the tree--but likely would not replace it based on what I know. Though it may help not to overwater it...

@GerardGibney3
@GerardGibney3 6 лет назад
Great video. Gorgeous soursop, love the black sapote, and the mamey as well. I'm surprised your soursop survived the cold better than mamey, because my experience was opposite. I lost a few grafted soursops in the 40s last spring outdoors (Miami and Homestead cultivars and maybe a few seedlings too) in zone 7 after they were overwintered indoors, but my Magana mamey took the 40s like a champ (I did kill a magana recently grafted plant in the upper 40's though last fall by accident: the shipping was during a bad time for temps). Soursop fruit juice is probably the single best juice that you could make period. Have you considered adding more Annonas? I think paw paws are a guarantee for your area, and cherimoyas probably as well, with maybe Squamosa being borderline? Cherimoyas are absokutely delicious, easy to germinate and grow fast, fruiting in like 3 years. They also require a chilling period during the winter that simulates your winter. The upper temps might be hostile but I am sure you could work out the micro climate. You'd probably love Garcinias as well (mangosteens). They are pretty tropical, but Imbe (livingstoni) is subtropical and from my experience, can take a cold beating. So can brasiliensis, or acha chiuru. Wouldn't try with my Mangostana (purple mangosteen), but now that whole foods regularly carries them, possibly doing a cold genetic selection would be in the future. Not sure if the seeds in those fruits are viable though since none germinated of last batch. Great stuff bro, keep growing!

Why do you always say your backyard is like California? Do you wish to live there?

A lot of tropical fruit trees actually grow in SoCal compared to Arizona.

not that lot unless you are right on the coast (within 5 miles from shoreline). 15 miles off the coast and SoCal is the same zone as AZ. You can grow all those tropical trees in AZ in right micro climate without need to pay millions for land on the coast.

We do love Southern California and the vibe we get when we go there. Since we're surrounded by beautiful desert everywhere, we just wanted our backyard to feel like our vacation space! :D
