Four years ago, our backyard was dirt, rocks, weed and dog poop. We started off wanting privacy and shade, which led to creating an edible 'food forest,' which evolved to us transforming our yard from a sterile space to one that provides habitat and food and water sources for nature. Check out how our yard has grown in that time!

You guys are AWESOME!!!! I'm over the moon I found your channel. I'm starting with an empty canvas and you have helped soooo much with my decision making on what to plant here! And even MORE exciting...wait for it...You're in QC!!! I'm in STV so we are neighbors! In fact I'm headed to A&G today after work!! I love seeing that there's wide variety of things to grow in the desert without having to irrigate, and creating microclimates is key. Amazing! Thank you!. ♥️ you guys rock! Such an inspiration.

Hey Freebies...what's up guys. Hadn't seen u for a while...so I came to check on in to see how the garden....especially the " mango strong " part of it was growing. I saw a brief mention of only 1 mango tree n nothing of the rest. What happened? I envisioned huge lush mellow mangoes on the trees gifting u 1 or 2 on the ground for the season. N to my surprise.... Cause I'm waaay' mango strong ' too😆 . Just wondering if they didn't work out. Anyway the garden looks great., the pond looks n sounds so amazing. It's so nice to see Greenie and Happy. I love the way u love those little guys. Stay cool guys. Nice to see u. Oh yeah...n also...that lemon with green and yellow striped skin n pink flesh / pulp on the inside... What an awesome thing that is! Never heard of such a lemon. Tell me...is it natural / heirloom or is it a hybrid One love... Talk to you soon...
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Thanks so much for the love! Yeah we're down to only 2 living mangos in the ground and one in a container, each one ending up catching a disease or something that appears to be verticillium wilt and it's been a death sentence every time we've seen it. That being said, we are turning our focus into less exotic tropicals and really just trying to grow what will be happy year-round in our yard or provide food or habitat for nature. The variegated pink lemon is actually a natural cultivar of the Eureka lemon :)

Great Channel. How cold did your place get last winter? I know you mentioned 20 F, can you confirm that and how did you plants like citrus do? What type of rootstock do you use in Arizona?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
It got down to 20F last winter (2018-19) at least once, according to our truck's thermometer and weather app on our phone. Citrus is capable of taking some frost, although some varieties like lime or grapefruit are more sensitive than oranges or lemons. Sour orange has been a common rootstock for a lot of lemons and oranges out here but I'm not sure what kinds are on our trees; we didn't know to care about that kind of thing when we first got started.

Loved your tour of your garden. At the moment, I have about 11 trees. Only 1 desert peach is in the ground. The rest r in containers 1gal to 36 inches. In Vegas I don't have dirt. It's like cement. Used a jackhammer to plant the peach tree. Amended the soil. It's very discouraging. No shade trees, i use umbrellas and shade clothes in the summer. Maybe I can plant bamboo in lg containers for shade. Let me know if u have any tips for me. Thanks n have a blessed day.
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Oh man, that is really hard to work in. I know you're probably sick of digging holes, but I would definitely recommend planting some strong shade trees to help you start breaking up the soil naturally over time. Adding mulch and keeping it moist will help you build your soil too. Hope this helps!

Just curious, how many gallons of water do you use each month?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Great question, and it's hard to answer because it varies from month to month and even year to year. We're finding ourselves watering less frequently now than previously because our plants are maturing and we have worked REALLY hard to improve our soil quality over time and create overhead canopies to shade the soil. Now when we do water or when it rains, more of that water is staying retained in the soil.

So great that your back making videos again! Was wondering if your dragon fruit experienced any frost damage during the winter and do you have any tips to grow them in Phoenix?
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Ours hasn't shown any frost damage, although it does grow in an evergreen tree so it has a pretty cozy microclimate. We're still experimenting with it and haven't gotten it to flower or fruit yet, but we'll share tips as we learn them!

Nicely done ! Isn't it exciting to see the growth year after year ?? :) :) How are you guys watering all your many trees along the walls ? Have you installed a watering system throughout ? [Fyi only, I may be looking to replace mine...one valve at a time per yr, maybe starting this yr (before Spring)...may be looking for add'l bids if you run across affordable professionals that know how to properly run drip, etc...an extensive project, as "many" of my 450+/- plants (that is not including my 5 raised beds) are on a drip system...but willing to pay the going rate for it to be done right].

Hey guys, I wanted to know growing directly on ground or raised beds which is better? How u made these raised beds??
@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
Hi Divya! Both are great methods of gardening, and they each have their perks. Gardening directly in ground means you will water less frequently, but you may have to weed more often. Gardening in a raised bed means you don't have to bend down to tend to your garden and have more control over your soil, but they are more expensive to start up. But you can have a successful garden either way! My wife and I build raised garden beds for our business, so we built these ourselves out of redwood. Please feel free to reach out if you need anything!

@GreeniesGarden
@GreeniesGarden 4 года назад
The papaya was from Home Depot and was not tagged with a variety, we think it may be Brazilian? And the bamboo are from all different nurseries, we have giant green timber (not correct name, but how it was sold to us), Alphonse Carr, Buddha Belly, and Iron bamboos. We're planning to order directly from Tropical Bamboo in FL next time! :)
