Family Feud Over the Funeral

Judge Mathis

The plaintiff brings her grandmother to court. The plaintiff got a cancerous tumor removed, and days later, her mother died. She needed help paying for the funeral, so she borrowed money from people. She claims her grandmother kept money her co-workers donated for the funeral, so she’s suing. The defendant says her daughter passed away right after getting gastric bypass surgery. She argues she didn’t keep any money, so she’s countersuing for defamation and emotional distress.

How do you allow your granddaughter to struggle to raise money for YOUR daughter's funeral and you just take money that was meant for that purpose? That's cold blooded. You know what that money was for, so stop acting like you were clueless.

First off I would to say that I became a fan of Judge Mathis because of his claims of tough love and for the most part he delivers on that... However I feel that he didn't stick to the facts in this case and let his personal feelings cloud his judgement...There was no empathy shown to the granddaughter by the grandmother... The granddaughter was dealing with four life altering chain of events all at the same time...The birth of a child, two major surgeries and the death of a parent all while having to support herself and a newborn baby... While recovering from her health issues where is the money coming from?On top of all of that she loses her mom and is left to come up with the burial expenses by herself...I was also upset with the fact that the grandmother who was fully aware of her granddaughter's situation, received money to pay for the entire funeral and felt that since she helped take care of the deceased that she was entitled to all the money 🤔...as my late great grandmother would often say "that beats all I have ever seen"...smh the grandmother should be ashamed of herself and she should have been forced to pay the money back because she failed to use the money for what it was intended for...

Let me just say this. I observe people behavior an i dive deeper into it by observing micro-aggression. The grandmother should ABSOLUTELY NOT HAVE KEPT THOSE MONIES! her behavior, the rolling of the eyes, the smirking, the head roll, and constantly turning her eyes to the right, just enough to see her granddaughter out of her peripherals, when the plaintiff was discussing how the grandmother stated; “take me to court to get your monies.” Told me right then and there, the grandmother definitely not only made that statement but also took the funds for her OWN PERSONAL USE! she lied about using half of the money on her daughter for a double casket and space. She used ALL OF THE FUNDS ON HERSELF.

JM took the Solomon route by splitting the money down the middle. Very judicious. It’s obvious that the coworkers gave the money to the family to help with funeral expenses. They gave it to grandma because that’s who they knew directly. However, grandma’s conclusion was totally wrong, believing the money was all hers. Finally, since she did contribute her own money to cover the cost of the funeral, it makes sense to split the money between both to help everyone recover the cost of burying mom. The Solomonic approach.👍🏾

I doubt they gave her a check with her name on it! The co-workers collected $$ at work. Most of the time collectively the coworkers gave cash for the funeral expenses, so no one would have to deposit a check & wait to use it! We did this plenty of times at work to help a co-worker or the family in need. 🤷🏾‍♀️ I know they told grandma it was to help with the funeral. Usually it’s specified by the person that is representing the job & coworkers. Grandma knew what it was for, she purposely kept the money because she felt entitled to it for being there for her daughter, even though that is what a good mother should do! 🙄 Why did she claim this as a shabby excuse?!! 🤷🏾‍♀️🙄 Grandma was wrong, but I personally wouldn’t have brought her to court! The grandkids collected the money for the funeral expenses, for THEIR mother so it wasn’t a financial burden. I know in principle grandma should have given them the money, but it isn’t bringing their mom back!

I’m sorry Ma’am, you should have given the money that was given you by your daughter’s coworkers towards her funeral costs. There is absolutely no excuse for you keeping that money. That is not right.

In the comments it's being mentioned that Judge Mathis was defending the Grandmother, however let's give him credit in knowing that $4,200 dollars is nothing compared to having the relationship with the family is greater than any money. A lot of hurt and pain has happened to this family and Judge Mathis was merely making a way for them to heal now and in days to come, because tomorrow is never a promise.

I really don't think that grandmother intentionally tried to get over. They gave her the money not any of her kids. She also said they knew the insurance policy would kick in after and that she helped with some of the expenses and the plot. They should've dug deeper into what happened with that policy and how much it was. They just so happened to spend exactly 4200. The granddaughter seems like the greedy one.

Beefing with her Granny to the point of keeping her kids away over $4,000 is disgusting.

This poor daughter. I mean she had like 7 life altering and life threatening things happen in a matter of 7 days. Can Judge Mathis pay for her vacation and a spa trip or something. She needs something really good to happen to her. This is just too much on one person.

Why would her grandmother make her deal with all of that after having surgery? You couldn’t bury your own child to save your grandchild all that stress

Can’t be mad at either of them for how they feel. Gma was there when her daughter needed her the most which cost time and money not to mention she’s is older so none of that probably come easy. The daughter was battling an illness and motherhood not to mention missing that last call obviously haunts her to this day. Funerals are hard on a family’s in general but people always wanna compare what they did and what they deserve unfortunately. Gma could’ve done something nice for her daughter or grandkids instead of keeping all of it and being the elder in the family. She did what a mother does for their child and I know her daughter’s kids not being there when her needed them filled her with some unholy feelings towards all of them. God bless the family to find healing.

Grandma is petty. The granddaughter is a very mature adult. Everytime the floor is hers, the grandmother downs the young lady. If she keeps it up, the young lady is going to walk away again & possibly never look back.
