At least in the actual movie, the master of the Chinese restaurant was trying to get the waiters to stop singing stereotypically! "Not ra-ra-ra-ra-ra, LA-la-la-la-la!"
The actors in the original movie hammed it up without the other actors knowing they would which caused the "owner" to laugh through his lines and the main cast to chuckle as they weren't expecting it either -- same for the whole duck and chopping the neck and head off. It was an honest reaction by the "mom".
Even if the show hadn't made jokes like this, they're throwing that term around WAY too loosely. The only commentary being made in that scene of the film is on an idiosyncrasy of Asian languages: they don't have separate sounds for L and R, so native speakers of those languages often encounter issues when speaking languages that do. That's not racist, that's just a fact. Those men weren't portrayed as being lesser than for it, we the audience aren't supposed to hate them for it, and their boss (no less Chinese than they were) actually demonstrated the correct way to sing the song. It's like the pen/pin blur with (mostly white) people from the south: is poking fun at that racist? The way Peter tells it, you'd think they were wearing fake buck teeth and there was a dog on that platter instead of a duck.
Now there’s an idea! I think I’ll stick to my family’s usual tamales on Christmas Eve (we’re white, but live in the southwest, sue us) and ham on the day itself, but maybe I’ll do something different every 23rd. There’s a region in England that eats a fish pie on that night that sounds pretty good. Maybe I’ll do that one year, Chinese the next, the Seven Fishes thing that the Italians do after that, etc.
I love how Family Guy calls A Christmas Story “incredibly racist” even though there’s literally whole compilations on the internet of Family Guy making racist jokes, has been canceled for that exact reason, and is banned in several countries for being racist and culturally insensitive.
Although I haven't seen Christmas Story(idk why lol I guess I just didn't have the chance), I've never got offensive when I am watching family guy even though I'm an Asain. Idk how I would react to Christmas Story, but I took the family guy's racist joke toward Asians as a complete joke. And I don't think their intention was to offense other people. And even this scene is just a joke I think.
Actually no it was cancelled because FOX kept changing its timeslot to worse and worse positions and the viewership numbers dropped, and then it got brought back when the DVDs sold well

@Dominic Romani stereotypes are a part of racism. You know, to think that somebody is something just because of their ethnic. A different thing is to laugh at the stereotypical concept that people has over a group, like The Simpsons or Family Guy do. But when you plainly laugh about the stereotype is bad. Still, that scene is kind of in the border, so it's not fully racist but it's not a representation of a stereotype either

Family guy pokes fun at everyone and doesn't single anyone out in particular, even themselves. Back in the day people were bullies trying to single those who are different out.
Wow, apparently I missed an episode of family Guy and here I thought I seen them all. I've got this one was excellent. I do hope they play this Christmas Eve or Christmas Day of the share in December. Definitely would like to see it

Something tells me not many people, including Seth and the writers, actually met first generation Chinese immigrants, or they wouldn't preach this kind of crap. Also, Seth and Family Guy staff are absolutely in no position to preach like this, it's disgusting hypocritical.
A lot of east Asian languages don't have an l sound, so when learning English, an r sound is commonly substituted. There are other languages with similar traits too. I forgot what language doesn't have a P sound, so they call Pepsi, Bepsi there.
Q. In Chinese, they don't have words with /l/ except at the beginning of words. So words like "mail" might be difficult to pronounce. Technically, this scene would be wrong since the /l/ is at the beginning. In Japanese, /l/ is pretty much nowhere to be found. Perhaps they were secretly Japanese, but only Chinese food would sell in that town.
Yeah problem with that argument is that moment is like maybe a minute long and the movie seemingly takes place in the 40s, when that sort of thing was a little more expected or the like and the movie itself is still really good otherwise, so we can usually look past one poorly thought out moment, since by all accounts it doesn't seem like being racist was the intention. Family Guy on the otherhand does stuff like this on a daily basis and has done so intentionally to get people's attention, often going way farther and in way more offensive ways that even die hard fans say is going too far. Compared to that having a few people pronounce words in a different manner seems extremely minor by comparison. So yeah, Family Guy you don't have the high ground here, not even if you have a mile high ladder you still wouldn't have the high ground.
I get it’s got a racist scene in it but it’s still (kinda) funny because if you think about it it’s a scene of two cultures that are really interacting for the first time in the manner of different holiday traditions
I wouldn’t say that was incredibly racist. Maybe if they had straw hats, glasses, squinty eyes, and buck teeth while holding chopsticks… and don’t pretend that’s something they wouldn’t do.

We were still kind of messed up with these things even in the 80s!!!
When I speak other languages that I don't know and mispronounce words.... usually the person who speaks the language laughs. I don't see how that makes them rascist.
I don’t like the last comments of this cartoon. I think people need to review what is really the meaning of racism. In 2022, everything is racism. Can’t people just simply enjoy the cultural jokes? I like Russell Peters who is a Canadian comedian. He is also an Anglo-Indian decent. He makes tons of cultural jokes. But I don’t think he is a racist.
Paul Winston It's insensitive sure but it's also inaccurate. The r=l linguistic quirk has been stereotyped to all East Asian english speakers but it's really more specific to Japanese english learners. The people depicted in this video and a Christmas Story are clearly meant to be Chinese servers. Japanese lacks the l sound as found in words like "holly" or "light"- the dark l sound. For a Chinese english speaker with an accent they would be more likely to pronounce the letter l as a vowel (especially those that follow vowels such as the l's in "old" or "mall) Mandarin Chinese has the r and l sounds and distinguishes them so the stereotype is just wrong when it comes to that
I heard somewhere that the Chinese alphabet does not include the letter "L," so they have to substitute "L" with the letter "R." If this this true, the carolers are an accurate depiction and not racist like they claim
I just don’t see what is racist about poking innocent humor because some native Chinese people haven’t learned our dialect as well as us yet. Clearly these guys aren’t use to pronouncing “L” all the way and it sounds like an “R”. As an only English speaking American who’s taken Spanish and French in highschool, it’s incredibly difficult to pronounce words the way they do when your not use to it. I wouldn’t get offended if I sang a song in Spanish and people laughed because of my accent. It’s not personal at all. I know I sound like a white girl trying to speak Spanish and I think it’s funny too 😂 It’s called “not being ashamed of your heritage or upbringing”. Unfortunately there are a VERY small percentage of Americans that think if you come to this country you should talk just like us. I’m not one of them. My only objection to mispronouncing is if your a school teacher here. I think particularly elementary school teachers should know and teach proper pronouncing of our language. These guys work in a Chinese restaurant.

Because several Asian languages don't have the "L" sound in their vocabulary like English speakers. So when someone whose native tongue is an Asian language tries to speak English, they unintentionally pronounce their "L" sounds as "R" sounds. These Christmas carolers are being made fun of for something that is really hard for Asian people who are struggling to speak English.
@@trevorpacelli8056 In fact, most Chinese can pronounce r and l very well because we use both consonants a lot. More Chinese pronounce /l/ wrong when it’s in words like “well”, but La la la is really simple for us and there are lots of Chinese words which have almost the same pronunciation with La. Although some Southern Chinese can’t tell the difference between r and l, they just use /l/ for both consonants, because they struggle with making retroflex sounds.
