Family stranded in the wilderness, 1948 V8 Willys to the rescue!

Some quick work with the ‪@MattsOffRoadRecovery‬ ‪@YankumRopes‬ got this family out of the ditch and back on the road after being stuck in a snowy ditch for 9 hours. They had followed Google Maps until it led them down an unplowed road and they got stuck. While trying to get unstuck they broke a CV axle shaft leaving them in 2wd and stuck even worse. So I hooked onto them with the 1948 Willys and towed them 3 miles to plowed road. Along the way they got stuck a few more times, but the ‪@harborfreight‬ Badlands winch made quick work of that and got us rolling again

@@Physical0bject Here in Central California we have a 4WD shop that’ll go on OHV trails that are a 2-3 hour drive into the mountains, they vary in length: 3 miles, 5, 13, 33. And are a lot of rock crawling similar to Rubicon. Last I heard he had a $500 service charge, I never heard anything about mileage fees. He has had some people balk at his fees, and he starts listing what it takes: Stop what he’s doing at work, load a trail rig onto the trailer, load recovery stuff, get fuel, drive up there, unload the rig, drive in and find them, repair, or pull them out, make sure they get back to the trailhead. I remember one story, a guy was left 9.5 miles in by his group because his Cherokee wouldn’t start, his wife called the shop once the group returned without him, the shop owner drove his FJ40 in, and had a buddy tagging along in his trail rig also, because that’s a lot of trail to cover by yourself, he added fuel costs to that point, but I forget, it was a 7.3 IDI turbo (and they climbed 9 thousand feet elevation), then time and fuel to drive two rigs 9.5 miles in on a 9 rated trail (usually 4-6 hours drive time one way). The only problem with the Cherokee was the fuel pump harness came unplugged right at the tank, in about 5 minutes he had the Cherokee running (and this was a couple days after his group left). He had to prod the guy to get him loaded up and moving, it was gonna be a long day already, they accompanied him all the way out, with him between the other two rigs. When the guy balked about the cost (I forgot what it was, $900 comes to mind), the shop owner tells him “look I’m not just some guy that happened along, your wife hired me and told me get him out of there”, then he started itemizing fuel and drive time, etc, and he’s not at the shop to schedule and direct work. The guy finally got it , and paid him. I got this directly from the shop owner, 3 of the recoveries he went on were referred by me. Out of the area people on the trails have no idea who to call, they’re happy when I blurt out the number from memory. Not everyone is in a position to go help for free, people have their own bills to pay.

I actually learned to drive in a 48 Willys jeep so I love this one. And that jeep had a V-8 because my dad put it in there. I was driving it when I was like eight years old on a ranch and I remember having to stand up to push the clutch in and I was terrible at driving but it taught me to drive. Good thing about driving on a ranch is you can go off the road and not hurt anything, lol Love your videos and I predict you’re going to do extremely well. Years ago in my hot rod days we had a similar issue with a Fuel Injected Corvette we put in a Studebaker. It would run great and travel hundreds of miles then sputter and die or lose power, spent hours trouble shooting it and it turned out to be a small stick the diameter of a match in the fuel line that would float up to the fuel pump and shut off most of the fuel, blew out the fuel lines and no more issues!

I had a tractor act up on me once. Might run an hour or more, or might run 5 minutes. I was about to pull my hair out, when I found the cardboard 'gasket' from a Clorox bottle cap, half way floating in the gas tank. I found out later, the guy renting the house decided he could use my tractor whenever he wanted, but thought he should add some gas to the tank once in awhile.

yay for another Willy's rescue. this Jeep is a beast Casey! Can't believe the Cherokee was naughty and in time out. 12:50 your recovery setups are always text book perfect. Always so well done. The new Yankum winch setup is really sweet. I carry 2 tree savers now. 1 is onboard 24/7 and 2. one in my full recovery kit for when we go off-roading. Was caught once without one and never again. I was able to borrow one from some Gambler 500 folks when we truly accidentally got stuck. Hope Nate can find the issue and it is not a horrible one to fix. You rock Casey I love your videos!

Ole Mr Willys would be proud of that Jeep still doing it's thing at that age! Maybe not so much with the Cherokee, lol. Well that's part of the game when you're running older vehicles as we do. Most every vehicle will hit the wall with repairs at some point but if it's the right vehicle for the job it can be worth it to bite the bullet and keep it running until you get through that wall to smooth sailing again. That's when it really pays off to have a good and reasonable mechanic!

My 1996 Grandcherokee did same thing before took me two years to figure out after google up turns out to be bad PCM on firewall behind coolant bottle. Order rebuilt one off of eBay or amazon. It says not to buy new ones from dealership because problem comes back again due to bad solders job at factory. Before I google up, I drop off at shop and mechanic said O2 sensor bad but it wasn’t that, it was giving out false code to code readers. The lady who had this Jeep for 20 years since new said her go to mechanic gave up finding out what’s wrong with it. I took the risk buying it and succeed haha!!! If you’re handy with solders then you be able to take apart and fix it, guy on RU-vid’s show how and post link where to buy rebuilt pcm too.

Had the same sort of trouble with a friend's 1993 Nissan Micra - bought in 2015 with genuine 29,000 miles on it. Dry joints on the air flow sensor. Factory cost £800 . fix costs. Twenty minutes and a few penies in solder and electric.

get yourself one of them T-2 Auxiliary Heater Assemblies from Jegs! Take a length of 3" flexible dryer vent, hook one end up to the heater and the other down your pants or up your jacket, its going to change everything. they make fancy pant retractable things that the tube fits into neatly when not in use, they're for ski boats, they love to shove the tube under their towel when its cold. they pump out a shitload of heat. The hootenannies come in T-1, T-2 and T-3, each with progressively sized 'heater cores' and they come with a built in squirrel cage fan with 3 positions, 12V 10amp

Yes love the old jeep, l would love to see it on tires only, it shows how capable it is. Also, there are a lot of innovative winter tires, new tech, that can afford you even more traction, you know all about studs! 🤔 did you try my suggestion to wear a stud down with a grinder to simulate wear, to see if the stud is still easy to remove and reinstall? Have you thought about approaching " Cummins " about a deal on one of their 4- cylinder diesels, the complete kit, engine, charge cooler, computer, and install specific kit. They may help you out because you help so many stranded people? Wish you all the best Casey 👍✌🏻❤👌🖐🌨❄⛄⛄🇨🇦😎.

While assigned to Eielson AFB we had to use snowmobiles and ATVs to get to and from our radars out back of the base. We stopped travel by these when it was -40. We have didn't heated anything but up to 4 layers. Cotton thermals, quilted thermals, wool uniform and then parka and what we called fat boy pants. Sometimes we even wore extreme cold weather masks. It got cold on an ATV at -30. You have on almost two inches of clothes and your podinky is only 1/2 inch (I hate shrinkage;o) you hands are blocks of ice and you have to take a leek. Good luck with that.
