For more videos, news, previews and reviews, go to kotaku.com At the Game Awards, Geoff Keighley explains why Hideo Kojima was legally not allowed to pick up his award for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
It was a missed opportunity for Konami, though it's a great idea for a publicity stunt. Attract attention making it seem like you're unreasonably restricting an artist from attending an award show (or other media event), and then they make a surprise entrance!
+SHAKEAL AHMED I really imagine the top-executives at Konami being complete, mentally insane or something. Seriously, even if Japanese people are noticeably different culturally and I don't always get the way they do things, even for japanese people this is fucking insane. Not trying to be xenobope. I love Japan, play many Japanese games and I wanna go there someday, but sometimes I just don't get them, but Konami is just pure insanity at this point.
+Linkenski I'm not sure how much truth there is to this, but I hear that older Japanese business men are incredibly stubborn due to how they're used to doing business.
+Linkenski Well if we are to believe anything from our anonymous sources that were ex-Konami employees (in which we will) they've said the new CEO of Konami is indeed bat-shit insane (literally those exact words), they also went on to say there have been several personal business feud's between Konami's new CEO and Kojima in the past and that there was definitely animosity between the two. So Kojima being barred is due to a personal reason from someone who is just being petty and arrogant instead of being professional and being a good sport that Kojima was able to make all of Konami's money back on MGSV's development.
+Linkenski Well they're the kind of businessmen to put people they want to get rid of but do not have grounds to fire in a tiny room with menial white to do until they get so depressed they quit. literal mental torture to get rid for of employees they no longer like or want.
EA: I dunno man, its taking it too far, even if the money is good. Konami: Money? What money? You guys still get that stuff? We just abuse for the eh... Fun? :((
@@neromauritzen8917 Konami: Now that you mention money i was thinking of making a shitty game with the franchise name..... EA: That's not uncommon, i've shut down lots of studios with that technique Konami: ...and charge them for a second save file! EA: Ok, that's way too far, even for me
Konami: What was Fallen Order? The bad guy doesn't get to make good games! EA:Well, maybe I don't _want_ to be the bad guy anymore! Konami: _Who are you?_
Haha yea that's understandable and he probably knew he'd get some big backlash from them, but he stood for what was right! Damn Geoff, the hero the gaming world needs!
+Zefanya Lt kojima should become the next cardboard box thief lol never underestimate the stealth of a cardboard box, korea had a thief using one for 2 years never being caught xD
4 years later, Kojima-san returns to accept his awards for Death Stranding for winning Best Game Direction, Best Score/Soundtrack, Best Performance (Mad Mikkelsen), & Best Studio/Game Direction. Celebrated by not only his own team, or the actors/actresses that played major roles in the game such as Norman Reedus, Lindsay Wagner, etc but also by the dedicated fans of Death Stranding and Kojima himself for sticking by his side throughout everything from 2015 up until now and the future. Succ on that, Konami.
Almost every game gets downgrade in final product cause of multiple platforms!! Why did uncharted 4 not got downgraded or bloodborne? Cause simply they were built for one system!! I work on videogaming 3d engineering trust me thats only reason multiple gaming systems!! I wanted to say Ubisoft is maybe my favourite, not the best.
Shitty servers, milked franchises, unoptimized & downgraded games, P2W games (like for honor, where you need hundreds of hours for completion, or you can pay), lootboxes... Wanna continue? Because I can. Last GOOD games from them? FC3, R6S, Southpark.
Hideo Kojima: Thank you, 1 million times, thank you. You are the sole reason why I purchased the ps3 and 4. In conversation, I refer to you as "video game Jesus". Whatever you create is amazing and you are truly a genius.
As a Japanese MGS fan, this video made me astonished three time. 1. There were Jack Bauer and Luke Skywalker showed off as the first impact. 2. World wide fans also had same feeling toward Konami as well as myself. 3. Quiet was real.
I am Canadian, Hideo Kojima and Snake have been in my life since 1998 and I feel a debt of gratitude to Hideo and everyone on his team that brought Snake to life.
It's eerie how relevant the story of MGS is right now with all that's going on here, we really are like his diamond dogs. Shit I'm glad to call myself that too, I'm fully with him.
I know i'm late. But Kiefer DID speak a lot in the game. Maybe not in the cutscenes, but in the Cassette Tapes he's always involved in. Of course now is more serious and he doesn't speak that much like David did in previous MGS games, the reason its because there's nothing interesting for Venom to say in TPP, Miller or Ocelot always explains him exactly what is happening without any questions (i.e "psycho mantis?" "Sahelantropus?" "Metal Gear?" etc... unnecesary dialogues and questions). (Sorry for my grammar, im Spanish.)
I know there are some people who don't like Geoff, but you have to respect what he did here. He really stands up for the betterment of the industry like few, if any. That was fantastic, Geoff, thank you for the transparency.
Imagine you're Hideo Kojima at rock bottom. You've been fired from the company you helped turn into an international behemoth, whose flagship franchise is your hijacked masterpiece. The actor who voices the lead character of your final game accepts your award, barely mentioning you... then, the host of the Game Awards ceremony cuts in to shed light on the injustice of your situation, and introduces a live performance of a song from your game's soundtrack, in honor of your forced absence.
Whether Konami realizes it or not, they are done with gaming. Sure they'll try to stick around but literally everyone hates them and wants them gone. You can't stick around for long in an industry in which the consumers of the industry literally want you to leave forever. They're done. It's really that simple.
But I still think gamers would still purchase a new mgs if they release it, I been playing it since mgs1 and even though I hate konami and love Kojima, can't lie I'd still buy an mgs6 with or without him :/ (sad truth) and let's not forget the Fifa stomping winning eleven (pro evolution soccer)
+spookycookies Overall, Konami will wither and die because of their stupid actions. You can't rip the heart and soul from a series and just expect it to survive, ontop of everything theyve done this year, nobody will support them anymore.
+spookycookies Well, they've decided themselves. "Mobile is the future" and they have their shitty pechanko machines or what they're called. I can't wait to get Kojima out of there and see him as a free man to do what he wants in the industry again, and then Konami is fucking done for.
I think this is the reason Kojima keeps his perseverance at 100% His love and dedication to the gamers, to great story telling, to his vision of the gaming industry. We need more like him. We need people to say "Fuck you, ill go do my own thing". Say what you want about Death Stranding, it might not be your thing, the guy pulled his crew together to create quality. And thats all, I, as a gamer, could ask of Devs.
Even though Hayter will forever be in my heart as the voice of Snake, Sutherland did an amazing work and paid tribute to the icon. Hideo Kojima is still the GOAT god dammit!
PatchFact Well i never noticed Snake Said even one sentence in MGSV xD anyway i totally agree with the decision kojima Made with Sutherland because snake is Not snake in MGSV so Its normal that two different Person's have different voices. I would wonder if they had the same voice.
That Mafia Company isn´t interested what a Lobby of Kojima is saying...unfortunately. That is the best example for a Mastermind like Hideo and a company who always only think about to earn more money - like the stupid machines in Japan (Yakuza-money as well)
why are we still here? just to suffer? every night, i remember Silent Hills, and PT, even chapter 3.. the future we lost, the upcoming games we lost, wont stop hurting, its like they are all still here, PT on my hard drive you feel it too don't you?
+Atwa i think a lot of ppl realised WAY too late that Konami sucked ass, even before all this bullshit with Kojima they were fucking up franchise like no tomorrow
This is where Geoff really leapt out of his Dorito Pope origins. It took BALLS for a guy like him to straight up call out a major games publisher, in front of thousands of people like this. You can tell he's nervous doing it, but he did it, because everyone needed to hear it. Mad respect. Glad he's come along as much as he has as a games journalist.
Where was this Geoff Keighley when he gave his speech about harassment in the video games industry? Where was this passion for such an outrageous thing as the workers that make these games possible being overworked and harassed by people with more power than them, and these predators almost always going unpunished?
+Isaac Gasca Konami is a completely different kind of "worse" too. EA are nice to employees, really nice, in fact. It's just that EA's business ideals hurt their products and consumer trust too often.
+Isaac Gasca well EA ,a couple of months ago, bribed so many people on reddit to ban anyone who post a negative review on star wars battlefront's alpha private gameplay
Hope Geoff watches this video and finds that same courage to denounce what's wrong with the industry right now, take a stand on the Activision case Geoff, just like you rightfully did with the case of Hideo and Konami.
team FUCK konami i hate pes anyway i like fifa i wud aprciate it if hideo joined electronic arts they are the best in graphics and all and yo know what konamis president is a perv
They ruined themselves they have no future now because they were so jealous of Kojima because people are probably calling the company Kojima instead of kohnami because he was everything that was great about that company
Dont even know what they were thinking @@ Fire the best man in your company ? The man that made name for the whole studio and worked nonstop for over 30 years LMAO
Mad props to Geoff. I never liked him as a journalist but when things looked unfair, he stood up and had the balls to call it out. Mr. Kojima, us fans will always be here for you and I hope you'll continue to surprise us with your artistic talents!
Dood. At least EA dont put up harsh game development working conditions, nor are they releasing *only* pachinko machines to get their income. EA is dead honest about their problems. I swear it.
at least EA knew they still fucked up and is trying to make amends to it's consumer, sure this year haven't really great with EA but at least john riccitelo is no more
Matt Something straight up, I will never buy another Konami game after 2017. Disrespectful, disgraceful and disgusting, this man is a legend in the business and in our hearts. Keep your crap Konami, your games are shit without him anyway
Imagine Gordon Ramsay has to investigate other business companies why they’re failing and fans are not buying their shit. *Gordon Ramsay in Business Nightmare.* Ramsay: What is this? GameStop CEO: That’s our chart of the market. Ramsay: Why is it so low? CEO: Well, we tried to make money out of customers when they return their games and they will only get like $10 back from a $60 game. Ramsay: What?! CEO: I mean, look at it, the chart is slowly climbing back up now. Ramsay: Well look at your list of stores and how many has been shutdown all over U.S.?! CEO: I mean we’re still climbing up in market. Ramsay: Oh my god...let me see the other distribution... (5 minutes later) What on earth is this?! CEO: Those are old video games. Ramsay: Old video games? Most of these are scratched. Don’t tell me you guys sell these? CEO: In fact we do. Ramsay: What?! How much? CEO: Well it depends the year of the game. Say for example, this game here “Final Fantasy X” released in 2001. We’ll sell it for $10. Ramsay: What if the customer doesn’t like it, or the disc won’t read? Do they get full refund? CEO: Unfortunately no. They’ll only get a partial back. So, since it’s $10, they’ll get *10* cents back. And if they’re a member with us, they get $1 back. Ramsay: Oh my god... But this one says greatest hits? CEO: Doesn’t matter. Ramsay: Fuck me... Narrator: After the devastated news from the CEO, Gordon got in contact to former employees that use to work at the headquarter building for GameStop to chat what had happened to these former employees. Ramsay: So, tell me what happened. Former Employer: Well, I use to work in the corporate office for 5 years. I remember hearing the CEO just yelling saying something “We have to do this or we are not making sales!” Something like that. One day I got in my office and doing my job, then out of no where I was told I got fire right on the spot. Without notices. Ramsay: Damn. So, where do you work at now? Former E: I now work in the human recourse department for the state here. And the management is way more better than that crap I use to work. Ramsay: I mean I can tell, because I talked to him and it just seems he’s not getting the point either. Well it’s nice to meet you. Narrator: Gordon then went to meet another former employee but this woman use to work for the store. Ramsay: So, what happened? Former E: I was harnessed by my manager at the time but he no longer works there. And I called the HR department about the situation and they just told me to “grow up”. Ramsay: Oh my god... Former E: HR in that department is a joke. HR in there is only meant for the company but not US employees. So that’s why I left during my 2nd month. Narrator: Later, Gordon went and to several GameStop stores to talk to employees, supervisors, and general managers on their roles. Ramsay: So, how long you worked here? Employee: about 1 year. Ramsay: Does your supervisor/manager get on you a lot? Employee: Not all the time, but they want us to get customers to sign up for rewards program but the way they tell me is like, if I can’t get it, I’m going to get a write up. It’s like we have to manipulate our customers. Ramsay: Damn... What a shame. *Next* Ramsay: So, you’re the supervisor and you’re the general manager. So, what’s your guys story about the company right now? Supervisor: Well, we just work for the company. Like the district manager will come in and tell us stupid things like, “Oh, if you’re just making the schedule you’re not suppose to clock in.” GM: Well, we had loss prevention came into our store and like he mention the DM we’re not supposed to “clock in” while making the schedule. Plus, whenever the DM comes in, he would pull one of my employee to the back room and talk and most of the time it’s 95% chance they get fire for no reason. And, the DM literally forced me to lecture my staffs and threat them to get those rewards sign up. Apparently I’m the *13th* manager in this store now. Ramsay: Holy hell... Narrator: Back in the headquarter. Ramsay: Okay...so, I did a little of my own investigation. And I cannot believe what I had heard. So, YOU over there you work in the HR department right? Staff: Yes sir. Ramsay: So, can you tell me what HR is supposed to be there for. Staff: We are here for our staffs whenever that’s needed or something important. Ramsay: Well apparently you and your members are full of shit. Because I got this audio tape AND got permission from this former employee to allow me to let you guys listen about this bull crap. *plays audio for the staffs* And you said you guys are here for the staffs? So full of shit. (Time pass by) *Both CEO and Ramsay argues for a while.* Ramsay: I can’t believe this. Never in my life I thought I would have to do this for the 2nd time of my life. Is walk away from helping you guys. *Ramsay walks out of the building and talks to the camera man.* Ramsay: Wow...just wow. I tried to help them but the CEO is just a prick. Even half of the staff in there don’t even wanna be in there and I’ve talked to former employees that worked in that building said they got fired without warnings was really shocking. But I can’t do this anymore. We’ll just see where they end up because I’m done with this bullshit.
Where's the Konami of Castlevania, Silent Hill, Contra...? The Konami of Metal Gear Solid....? It's so sad to watch its mask crack down... Back in my childhood, the words Nintendo, Sega, Konami and Capcom were golden. What's happening...?
+TeacherGus Nintendo's doing good. Sega needs a bit work, but it's not NEAR as bad as Konami. And even Capcom is looking like they're trying to pull themselves out of the hole they dug. Konami? Konami has buried it's own grave, layed in it, and poured the dirt over itself. All it needs is a tombstone and it's finished.
Konami= Worst Japanese video game company at the current moment Konami has become so bad that they make EA, Sega, and Capcom look amazing in comparison!
+BetaComparison5 wanna know whats worse....capcom is learning from their mistakes and trying to fix everything...hell sega even wants to fix everything
+jolitero Yeah Capcom has made strides but they fucked up so much it's taking some time. I mean losing the original developers of Devil May Cry and making that shitty reboot with a shit team was a low point for me. At least Platinum games continued to make Bayonetta and MGR: Revengence. Now that Bayonetta is in Smash and not Dante I think it's clear that Capcom fucked up on that one.
US marine: sergeant Isis appears to be attacking Konami head quarters, we've managed to evacuate the employees, but the head of the company is being held hostage. Do you want us to send in rescue? sergeant: eh...I was told by top brass there were no more civilians left, all we see are terrorists in that building.....besides, we can't win every battle can we? Rendezvous back to base US marine: copy that serg.
+DopeAap Lol Konami punished employees and demoted people for liking a Facebook post of an individual that was leaving the company it's just the top guys who are the problem
+Toni kireE Lahtinen I understand your hate completely, but that comment was a little too far. I am finished with Konami myself. MGS5 is the VERY last game that I pick up from this company and they do deserve to go under. Attacking their headquarters through a terrorist group like ISIS is just stretching it.
For best direction something I wouldnt even consider as a Game Award sure its important in game development but how about Best RPG, Best FPS, Best Story you know shit that matters. Death Stranding is a horrible game with a masterpiece story taped unto it thats my best description.
@@imixupwords5340 I thought the exact opposite, for me I really enjoyed, and still enjoy the game. Playing on harder levels, the asynchronous online elements is an experience I've never had. That , the story, the music and the unbelievable fact that a game that visually beauitful is running on an underpowered 2013 base ps4 is crazy to me.
@@cookiess5049 Amazing story. But the gameplay is just... Not good. And the gameplay matters the most. It's a game that plays like it should have been a movie. Not to mention the 9+ hours of cutscenes...
Hard to believe after Hideo creating Konami's most beloved and bestselling games for 30 years, that Konami decided to backstab him and go for mobile games. What a fucking letdown.
Also, of course a 40 IQ person like you would not like this game.. loot at you face dude.. u're like those skinny deforme dudes addicted to crack from police movies and shit.
Because he'd then hand off the series to someone else. Seriously, he's tried shilling the series off to someone else since after Metal Gear 2. Metal Gear 1 he just kinda assumed it would be a one and done and that he'd move onto other games, which he did for awhile.
It's good that Geoff didn't sugar coat the situation and just straight up said that Konami didn't let him come to the show despite him wanting to. This makes the tribute all the more impactful.
Would be interesting to know which Konami big boss wife or daughter did Kojima screw with to be put to a blacklist so strongly. He has been completely shut out by Konami so there must be some huge reason behind this because it all happened really suddenly and fast. It's true he spent a lot of the company's money in making MGS, but he also earned them multiple times that back.
+Misbehave my guess is that they fell out with him because of money which is lets face it pathetic, they should have known he would make alot more money back from sales of the game the ceo must be deluded
+Misbehave Konami is closing down they're games to make gambling machines for Vegas and mobile games. But they're doing it in the most asshole way possible like the rest of Japanese companies that do this.
Maybe the wife of the CEO was like Kojima is handsome and more of a man than you he brings big money to the company and he deserves to be the CEO thats how I see what happen but still......it would've been better of Kojima was the CEO instead
What a shame. Metal Gear solid has always been a gaming masterpiece through its intricate story telling and depth, and that has been because of Hideo. You could tell how metal gear 5 was just halted and torn up by Konami. That was not the vision of Hideo at all. This saga reminds me of the Snyder vision in the DC universe. Batman Vs Superman was completely cut down for theatrical release, and in absolutely no way was Justice League a Snyder film.
WE HOLD OUR RIFLES IN MISSING HANDS. WE STAND TALL ON MISSING LEGS. WE STRIVE FORWARD ON THE BONES OF OUR FALLEN. THEN, AND ONLY THEN, ARE WE ALIVE. THIS PAIN... IS OURS...
We can all go boo Konami until all the frequencies break down their HQ, but I can't help but worry about Geoff at this point. Shit, good for him for biting the bullet and revealing this info, but God knows what Konami is going to end up doing to him. They're probably gonna sue him for millions or until they force him to "admit" that he was lying. We should all go protect Geoff for a while, is all I'm saying.
Geoff can be a massive shill and make boneheaded decisions sometimes but man... That took a lot of balls and conviction. You can tell Geoff really loves this industry and I have massive respect for him for that.
That pretty much how I’ve always felt about Geoff. A guy who genuinely loves what he does but also sometimes acts like a huge suck up. But, of the many journalists and industry types, he’s probably the most sincere so that goes a long way.
@@JustinZarian Makes sense, though... you kind of have to be a suck-up if you want your ginormous awards show to be made. Can't get sponsors by not being amiable to the people who will back your budget in exchange for ad space.
And we fast forward to today and most people just ended up forgetting about this happening and how they treated all their other employees. And making the ones who've left un-hirable by trying to taint their resume. Maybe everyone else has forgotten about this but I haven't. And they still continue treating everyone in their company like shit, plus ridiculing their own legacy. That's why to this day, I still haven't bothered to give Konami a dollar.
