I know Hideo Kojima is the f$&@ing man but we all need to give some credit to Yoji Shinkawa. He's brought all those awesome characters to life. Go Kojima & Shinkawa!!!
*"I hope i can pass various genes, on to the next generation of game designers who will create future Metal Gear titles"* Yeah and now we have Metal Gear Survive...
This is the first game to ever make me straight up cry. First play through I skipped through all the cutscenes. then I picked it up again three years later and watched the cutscenes through with a drink and realized how well put together this game is.
I can't imagine how hellish it must've been for Kojima's Production Team to keep up with his demands. Kojima's creativity is one of the gaming industry's best, but it does come at a cost of high standards. Still, I would be interested to at least work one project under him (from start to finish) to understand how his mind work.
I’ve never heard one single bad thing spoken about him by anyone that has worked with him. I could be wrong, but even five years later since this was posted I still can’t think of anything. Everyone has said working under him has been awesome and they all have the upmost respect for him Truly sad Konami dumped him to make more mobile game
Except MGS4 is a steaming pile of reconned shit, and most fans hate it. Other than the upcoming MGSV, there hasn't been any good games out of Japan in a LONG time. Resident Evil has lost touch with it's fanbase and is just plain garbage now. Silent Hill has become so bad it needs to be saved by Kojima. Kojima even said that Japanese game designers have fallen WAY behind the pact.
Libyan Gamer Neither Kojima nor his team's creativity extend equally amidst all Japanese developers. I think it undermines the degree of both talent and skill that KP has proven themselves at time and time again to suggest that their accomplishments can be summed up simply for the fact that they're Japanese. No other Japanese developer has been as consistent in quality control as the titles with which Kojima has personally maintained creative direction throughout his career.
The Playstation 2 version of metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty has an edition with a bonus DVD. The Bonus DVD contains a full making off documentary. There is a chance that this DVD has been ripped and uploaded to RU-vid (hint, hint).
This is perfect, seeing the creator and all his genuine emotions. He was an out cast in his early days but turns out to be one of the greatest. I love his work.
Thanks for a great video. Amazing to see the cameraman casually walk into Yoji Shinkawa's office, and voila....the great illustrator is there! By MGS 1 on PS1 and MGS 2 on PS2, Kojima and Shinkawa were already veritable legends in the gaming world.
It's always awesome to see everyone working on the stuff I love. Especially on older looking tech with papers and books scattered around the workspace.
it's amazing how far Hideo Kojima has come at making the awsome MGS Series.Just to think back when he realeased the 1st metal gear game,Meta Gear on the MSX,alot of people said no one will like this game, don't bother continuing with it.20 years later it's the best series ever.I wonder how those people who mocked Kojima back then feel now?
It's so inspiring to see all those masterminds and talented people behind the scene working on one of the most popular games ever created. Just amazing :)
man, i wish i saw this earlier. i would definitely made it extremely clear how much i appreciate having such a game when he signed my cover in Manhattan.
Man, watching this video pretty much tells me how much work and efforts are needed in order to make video games, like you gotta watch out for sounds, music timings, effects, movements, environments, and all that stuff.
I recently saw some backstage video of Kojima productions today in 2023 and is quite interesting to see the differences, even about the studio setting, devices etc
Why do Japanese developers always look so casual/friendly when those in the USA are either gross neck beards or way too damn formal? If I was one of the players beta testing there, I'd of turned around and been like "why can't I take my pants off mid battle?"
It handles pretty much everything you see as a player. It generates the graphics (and how well the engine can handle your console/computer's ressources plays a large part on the quality of those graphics), but it also deals with the sound, handles your controls, etc. It sets your limits for everything. If you want to do this really awesome thing (say, have the player blow everything up buildings with rocket launcher if he so desires) and your engine can't handle it, you'll have to deal with it.
It's true. There are a few exceptions to the rule (John Carmack, Rockstar games, a few others, most of which today's vapid kids don't know about). But the best programming and best system optimization comes from Japan, easily. It did for decades, until the anomaly that was the Xbox 360, which out a lot of money behind western game studios and use of their lazy DirectX platform (all this does is draw effects and stuff for you, at higher computing cost, but it doesn't have to be manually coded). For the first 1/3 of the generation the 360 was lead SKU for multiplatform games, so I got it for that, but always picked up PS3 exclusives, especially the first and second party titles. THESE games were truly, easily the best of the generation (MGS4 being one particularly special title). When really incredible teams like Konami/Kojima, Sony Santa Monica (God of War), Naughty Dog (Uncharted, The Last of Us), Guerilla (Killzone) (EU 1st party studio), Infamous Series... The list goes on and on. But the bigger point is just that, yes, now we're back to all things being the same base platform, with the PS4 more powerful all around, with 40 to 1 exclusive titles per year and growing vs the XBone, which is dead in the water (see history of Microsoft 360 and HD-DVD attachment to see where your money is headed), is that the cell processor was challenging to program for, but when mastered, created absolutely incredible experiences, which honestly were "next gen" years ahead of their time, and in a league of their own. And if you missed out on Ps3's 3D stereoscopic games (with a good passive 3D HDTV), you seriously missed out! That shit was like Project Morpheus way before it's time. The 360 3D was "fake" 3D, with a simple, fake, three z-plane parallax effect. On the PS3 everything down to the bump mapping was 3D. This made immersion games a really stellar experience. Sadly it never caught on really big, as our unfortunate redneck neighbors here in America were focused on buying their 64oz soft drinks, being obese, devolving their English skills on RU-vid, and hugging their Xbox 360s while playing Call of Stupid. Then ten years later, low IQ America (Microsoft's core market for Xbox division) started becoming more self aware, sort of like caveman learning not to eat its own farts, and realized they were paying, in gross, far more for the Microsoft product, which was now not only inferior in every possible way, but had actually nearly doubled in price, BEFORE the typical MS ripoffs (eg, additional $50 per rechargeable battery pack per controller? That's a $100 controller, and it sucks!). 1080P vs 900ish p etc forever, fake over clock patches, head of the division leaving prior to launch, price drop within the first year, total fail. XBone is already dead. The funniest thing is how they've tried to hide stuff from you poor idiots who stuck with brand over brains. I was watching a video of guy playing Destiny on the XBone the other day, then several more, and realized, XBONE DESTINY HAS IN-MISSION LOADING SCREENS!!! WTF? it's one thing that the XBone version has worse controls, dumbed down graphics, and lots of content carved out that's exclusive to the PS4 version.... But you guys go driving on the shrike, and there's a bunch of popup, then BAM, a LOADING PINWHEEL, over and over and over... Your shirt system can't even load a whole map at once! Didn't realize the PS4 has ZERO in-game loading screens, did you? Now that's some serious proof that the XBone is really down on the Wii U's level, power wise. Really pathetic how MS ripped you morons off with slow, cheap hardware (your old RAM from nearly 5 years ago sucks). It's not too late. If you bought from a big store, get your refund, and get the right console. Otherwise you'll be buying it anyway when your system gets shut down soon (MS shareholders are deciding to liquidate the XBone division completely); sorry lovers! Gotta read the news sometimes.
This gem reminds me of the first time i've watched a documentary about making a game, it was Silent Hill 2 in extras DVD, so far i was a casually pirating some games especially the ones i don't like, but after that point i started to buy every single game, no matter how shitty they were, seeing so much work put into them.
@zrifepsych well actually it's a suit of programs generally provided in an integrated development environment to simplify and speed the development of games ina data driven manner
Actually, I believe the reason was largely due to lack of disc-space on the 360 to compactly fit the hours and hours of audio that could more easily be fit onto a single blu-ray. That isn't to say that it wouldn't be more technically limited in other ways, but I'm not sure the game would significantly look or play any worse on the 360 if Kojima had decided to develop for it.
Michel Souza JP, FR, IT, CN, USA and GB Among others for me :) But Kojima is in the top for me, his ideas are awesome. After him i also admire to David Cage games and of course Gabe Newell
2:10 one of the biggest game studio, making MGS4, the art director uses a old CTR screen that have a refresh rate that fucks up the camera lol, poor guy
