WHAT IS UPPER TRAPS PAIN?
Your “trapezius” is a large muscle in your back that goes from the base of your skull to the tips of both shoulders and then down to the middle of your back. The “upper traps” or upper area of this muscle is from the base of your skull to the tip of your shoulders and is a common place for tightness, tension, pain, and muscle knots.
WHY DO I GET PAIN IN MY UPPER TRAPS?
There are many things that can cause tension and pain in your upper traps. The most-common causes I encounter in my physical therapy clinic include working a desk job (often with poor posture), stress (especially if you “carry stress” in this area), and accident or injury (sprain or strain).
HOW TO FIX PAIN IN UPPER TRAPS
The right stretches and exercises can work wonders in helping to alleviate tension and pain in this area, but oftentimes this relief is only temporary if the actual cause of the pain still persists. The best treatment is to regularly perform stretches to alleviate tension in your neck and upper shoulders, perform strengthening exercises to your lower traps and postural muscles, and eliminate the source of the pain (fix your posture, eliminate stress, etc).

Thank you so much Jared. I really needed this. I suffer from extreme neck and upper back pain and I’m only 31 years old. I’ve been having severe neck and upper back pain for over a year now. And I haven’t been able to find anything to relieve it. I see so many videos about lower back pain. But no one talks about upper back pain. That scapula pinch technique was much more effective than what I normally do. The stretch was great. Thanks! I know you can’t diagnose or treat anything through the internet (and I will ask my doctor at my next visit)… but during those shoulder rolls, I get a FIRM click / pop in my right shoulder. It happens just as my shoulder starts to descend from its vertical peak and roll forward. No pain felt, just the thud / vibration on the front of my shoulder. I will just skip that for now. Otherwise stretching demos are always appreciated.

Thank you for the amazing and helpful videos! Upper strapezius stretch - does this approve the backwards mobility of my left hand as well because it hurts a lot just putting my left hand on my back... or putting on a jacket etc. What other exercise could help to ease and better that mobility?

Hi Jared, Thanks a lot for your videos. I’m grateful for these. I’m doing your upper shoulders, neck and trap exercises (doing Yoga, lifting separately) watching your videos for a while (>3 years). Once in a while I get really sore traps and neck, then I do the exercises and then it goes away and I’m lifting weights and doing yoga so I think it might be strengthening the muscles. But my question is: Why does the pain come back? I’ve invested in a very good mattress and pillow and I’ve good supporting chairs for work. This tightening of the muscles seems like a yearly feature. could it be connected to : aging or stress? If so, what would you recommend? I look forward to your response. Kind Regards, T.

Can you do a video on healing an SC joint? I have a bulge and popping noise where my collar bone meet my sternum. I think it is an SC joint inflamed from playing tennis. Thanks!!!

I saw your posture video, the comments said it will 3 months to fix your posture. I was a little interested is there a faster way of fixing your? posture even if its harder

Think of it this way, @GalaxyNinja-ew9ix - how long did it take to "develop" bad posture and how long have you "had" bad posture? Most people measure that time period in months and years. Doesn't it make sense, then, that it might take that long to correct it as well? The best thing you can do is be consistent - with your posture and with your exercises - and it will take care of itself. Good luck!
