I don't always walk into a den of professional serial killers, but when I do, I make sure I'm surrounded and outnumbered before I antagonize them into a blind rage.
also important to note that you want to make sure you’re seated, relaxed and completely unaware of even the existence of potential violence Really make it clear that not a single one of your survival instincts decided to make the trip with you today
some people just need drama , choas and dysfunction to get through their day. he was looking for a fight, worst case scenario, he gets a black, scars, broken bones maybe....i dont think he was expecting to get killed for antagonizing the guys
the only logical explination i can think of for fat dom's stupidity, is that phil specifically ordered him to make fun of them and get a reaction, to show dominance or maybe to begin the process of cutting ties with NJ, and eventually plan to take over. From the beginning, he avoided any type of rapport by declining their offer to stay, even though he was staying. the whole thing with the daughter was probably not true. even if phil ordered him to insult them, he shouldve brought someone else with him. its not like he doesnt know he is dealing with dangerous people
He’s a made guy which usually means they can’t touch him, so he continued to abuse his status cuz he thought he could get away with it. On a side note, Silvio piggy backing Fat Dom like a little kid is funny as F.
It wasn't just Fat Dom's insults that got him killed. It was the contempt he was showing for the Soprano family by saying them. Sil and Carlo knew Phil and his people killed Vito, and Dom knew that they knew. By spewing insults about Vito and Carlo, he was saying "We can kill one of your guys and crack jokes about it to your face and insult you along the way, and there's nothing you can do about it." In some ways, the disrespect Dom showed towards the Sopranos was similar to the disrespect Coco showed by making lewd remarks to Meadow. They each ended up paying a steep price for it.
You are right on the money! Most the time,he's not even smiling when he's cracking these jokes! He basically went over there, to say...yeah we did it! Fuck you guys! What are you gonna do about it?! They thought they were weak! He wanted to go back to Phil and tell him what he did! In fact,I think Phil even knew about it! And sent him over there,to test the waters! Which is why's he said... Forget fat dom,who goes to Jersey and never comes back! He knew he went there and I'm sure he knew why!
That is a very astute observation. Being comparitively small ("just a glorified crew") the Soprano family had to retaliate so disproportionately to avoid being considered weak and vulnerable. Fat Dom and Cocco were both probing and they got their answer.
@@ej11481 You are right, but I think their pride and the political necessity to retaliate forcefully to signs of disrespect are intertwined. There are really interesting social and anthropological studies out there about this phenomenon. Any society or sub-culture - like organised crime - that cannot take recourse to common laws and law enforcement are very sensitive to all matters of disrespect. They cannot be perceived as being weak or passive in the face of a slight or they risk falling victim to more serious attacks. The same happened with herdsman cultures in remote regions where their possession can easily be stolen from them. They invariably develop a honour culture with the need to retaliate to any sign of disrespect. No man can afford to be considered as someone who takes an insult without adequate response. It becomes eventually physiologically hardwired. This has been tested and men from these cultures show a different physiological response to insults, stress hormones, cortisol levels, etc.
I seriously don't know what was funnier. Sil smacking Fat Dom with the portable vacuum or when Chris went to score heroin and he got smacked with the Fisher Price xylophone. At least Chris lived another day.
Fat Dom's actor, Tony Cucci, had auditioned for the show for 10 years! He was disappointed that his character would be killed off so quickly, but David Chase assured him that it would be memorable. And it really was!
@@AllThisOverASliceOfGabagool like I said he compromised. He wouldn't move a muscle, so as to avoid wasting calories . None of the food spent 20 years in the can, not around Dom it didn't 🤣🤣🍕
What is so timelessly striking to me about this scene is the fact that not 3 minutes before they brutally stab Dom to death, they GENUINELY greet each other as friends and allies.
I always found it profoundly interesting that Carlo was most disgusted by Vito’s lifestyle to the point of offering to kill him personally and yet you could tell he was really hurt by Dom’s jokes about his dead comrade.
@@john33333the way Carlo had his back turned idk, it definitely felt like "we can't talk shit about Vito, but you're an outsider" even the way Sil mentions Vitos kids ages it was something he was pissed about. I personally think Carlo compromised in jail but that's my head Canon he straight up says to Tony "Vito wouldn't be the first"
Wish they got Pesci or someone on the show for a bit. That would have been great. Too hard I guess. It could have been great he could have been introduced to Chris first time and he'd be like "Don't I know you?"
***** Way I see it, it would've been too obvious. Half of the cast in the sopranos were in goodfellas anyways and pesci would've just been playing an older version of tommy if he were on the show. I do agree though, a little cameo with pesci as an innocent bystander who disrespect chris and gets killed would've been fucking hilarious if done right.
GREAT IDEA. Nothing says quality TV like a wink to the audience. They could even have filmed one episode in front of a live studio audience, the episode where Pesci and DeNiros characters turn up. -- Here's my script. It's pretty awesome. (DeNiro walks in. The crowd cheers and claps) Chris: "Don't I know you?" DeNiro: "The fuck you talking about?" Camera pans to a spider scuttling along the floor. DeNiro STOMPS on the spider. "I fucking hate spiders." Audience cheers and claps. One guy in the audience yells out "SPIDER! THAT'S WHAT CHRIS WAS CALLED ON GOODFELLAS". Then Phil walks in. DeNiro: Ohhh! I thought I seen you before. Phil: What? Suddenly a BAT flies in, and DeNiro pulls out his gun and shoots the bat. Boom. DeNiro, calmly: I fucking hate Bats. AUDIENCE ERUPTS WITH CHEERS AND LAUGHTER. The same guy in the audience yells out "Ohhh! Bats! Cause the guy who plays Phil Leotardo played Billy Batts in Goodfellas! Yeah!" Then Joe Pesci walks in. Phil, to Pesci: hey, can you do me a favour? Pesci: what? Phil : I left something at your home. A present. Pesci: What? At my home? Phil: Its a square container. Really shiny . Pesci: the fuck you talking about? You mean a box? Phil: Yeah! A box. Real shiny looking. Pesci: A shine box? Phil: Yeah. So, how about you do what I akksed you to do. Pesci: What's that? Phil: Go home and GET YOUR FUCKIN SHINE BOX! AUDIENCE CHEERS. CLAPS. WHISTLES. A STANDING OVATION. FIVE FULL MINUTES. ROSES ARE THROWN ONTO THE SOUND STAGE. Then we hear a narrator./VOICEOVER: "The Sopranos is filmed in front of a live studio audience. And yes, we threw in a few references, to our beloved audience, we hope you picked up on them! Tune in next week and seecwhat the fellas get up to. They really are good fellas! The outtro music plays. -- Wouldn't that be GREAT? Yeah! Shows should always wink at the audiences. Awesome idea.
Yeah, or De Niro, or Ray Liotta...or, heck, even Lorraine Bracco, or the guys who played Billy Batts or even Spider....imagine how great they would have been in The Sopranos!
Wtf was Fat Dom thinking? Seriously. He just wacked a made guy by killing Vito (he was involved with it) and then he’s gonna go over TO THAT FAMILIES HQ and joke about it? How has this guy survived in that life that long?
@@karazor-el6085 yea in his mind he was a New York made guy, and even in real life, New York hardly realizes the New Jersey family (The DeCavalcante Family) as a serious threat. Going by how New York characters talked in the show they seem to feel the same way. Allot of people don’t realize it as viewers because we’re seeing things from Tony’s perspective. But when it comes to the Mafia families power Totem pole, The Soprano Family (really called the DiMeo Family) would rank really low. Compared to other families they’re not very strong. They only have a couple crews, which means they only have a couple captains, and maybe 2 dozen soldiers AT BEST (more than likely less). If the Soprano Crime Family were a real mafia family they’d be one of the weakest in the nation.
@@matthewriley7826 He didnt give a rat's az about Vito, no pan intended. Fat Dom forced his hand when he fallen with force on his knife repeatedly. Allegedly.
@@matthewriley7826 He wanted to wack Vito, but guys from another family doing it and the way they did it is a different story. Vito was one of them and it should have been taken care of in house. Super disrespectful on multiple levels.
@@Lynx-lh9it It's a real place in Jersey which would make sense why he stopped at Satriales before Metuchen. Being from Jersey, I can say they got every New Jersey detail right.
So damn funny: "Silvio hit him first", like two kid brothers who talk about sticking together until dad shows up, and then they turn on the other to save their own butt.😁
Yeah Silvio didn’t want him to be killed when Carlo grabbed the knife. Silvio screams “No Carlo No” Silvo just want to beat his ass so he’d watch his mouth but Carlo the one who killed him because he made a gay joke about him.
Again….the way Gandolfini, upon seeing Dom’s body, quickly threw up his hands saying “I doan wanna know!” without uttering a sound….is pure magical talent. This gifted Actor often said more with his face, his body, and his hand gestures than many can do with words.
@@christopherg1288 yeah Christopher….probably so. But I would almost bet that the gesture wasn’t written into the script. From what I understand about him, the writers and Chase would write a scene in general terms, then let Gandolfini “go”. And again, just from what I have read, JG was nothing like his character. He at times could display a “short fuse”, and use off color language (and aside from maybe nuns, who doesn’t anymore), but in the minutes before going on to the set, he would become quiet-almost distant-I’m assuming as he goes into character. Still, your point is valid…as I obviously neither know the man nor the circumstances. Take care…be well.
@@aleaguilar9813 lol no son, serial killers are guys like John Wayne Gacy. He didn't do it just for the fun of it, it was an honour thing cause Phil's cousin married the fanook. He was paid to do it, it was a hit.
@@Alakster27 Factually incorrect. It’s not just the quantity that defines the term serial killer but the circumstances of each killing. They're not serial killers just as much as soldiers in the military with multiple confirmed kills are not considered serial killers. They're murderers but they're not serial killers. Stop misusing the phrase serial killer. You use that phrase when describing guy's like Jeffry Dahmer, not mafia thugs.
was it unintentional? I viewed the gay jokes at Carlo didn't bother him, it was the jokes over their dead comrade Vito that angered them. Yeah he may have been gay, but in truth relationships the mafia have with each other are harder to break then shocking revelations. Vito may have been gay, but he was still their family.
@@WrestlingGenius777 I think it was more so Coco showing his wings over the Sopranos out of disrespect. It wasn't avenging Vito's death, it was them avenging their respect. NY whacked a member of the Jersey mob without Jersey's authorization and now here he is making a joke about it.
Lmao his screams of pure terror then he gives it all hes got until that last stab. The actor did a great job of showing the adrenaline and craziness of the situation so quickly. That was awesome
Good ears, i had never heard that either, had to go back and re-watch. Sil said "hit him, hit this prick", so guess you are right he didn't want Carlo to kill him.
Good ear! I’ve watched this scene so many times and never noticed that. Also when Carlo stabs Dom a second time he yells “Carlo!” like he’s saying “no stop!”
There was a lovely display of kitchen knives set out on the table, and all of a sudden Dom just collapses right onto it. Nobody could've seen it coming. Act of God.
Great scene, i love how Sil’s trying to do Fat Dom a favor and get him out of there. Sil obviously can’t stand him, but he’s playing defense the whole time - until he isn’t.
Yeah, you know why Tony got whacked in the finale? Because he ordered onion rings for the table. Truly shocking stuff just how much little things affect the bigger picture.
This is probably my favorite kill in the series. It's chaotic, primal, brutal, unecessary, and came almost out of nowhere. And the Sil and Carlo team-up is cool to see.
You know it’s time to look for another job when you were an actor on the sopranos and your reading the script for the next episode and your character utters the words “ I’m just breaking balls”
@Dead Burter that just sounds like fat don to me, the way i see it, the guy getting gutted is the more likely person to be yelling no no than the person who hit him first. I mean Carlo is a seasoned mafioso, he aint making some rookie mistake like that
The Sopranos. A brilliant show where you hate almost every single character featured, yet still love it. Not to mention it is funnier than any sitcom I have ever seen by far
1:40 Damn, Dom doesn't even finish speaking before Silvio busts him with that vacuum. He must have had it cocked and ready while he was waiting to see what Dom would say next lol.
Well I'm mean, he did tell Carlo to "Take this prick!" That can be interpreted any number of ways, and in that situation I'd take it as permission to kill Dom, too.
@@BigDanTeague"hit" is not "stab" or "kill" Sil says "Hit this prick!" And then when Carlo grabs the knife he yells "No! Carlo! Carlo!" By then it was too late so he just went with it.
@@bman-ef6ji wrong. Once you hit a made guy from NY, you have to really "hit" him. When he said hit him, he meant kill him. They don't use words like stab or kill
@@BigDanTeague you're probably right that they would have just had to kill him regardless but that doesn't mean Sil didn't yell "No! Carlo! Carlo!" You can literally hear it
One of the very few times we see Silvio's emotions get the best of him. He didn't lose his cool when Pussy betrayed them, nor when his best friend was in the coma. Always calculating even when something terrible happens that should tear him to pieces. I'm pretty sure that the only times this happens is when his own pride is damaged.
It's so funny how different all the situations are where Sil flies off the handle. Fat Dom breaking balls, Matt sweeping the cheese at his feet while playing poker, Tracee being absent from work, Chrissie mouthing off at his intervention
I love this scene, it shows after everything Vito was still their boy. They didn't agree and made them uncomfortable, but they weren't going to tolerate him being mocked.
@Chuck Buskee Definitely this. Carlo would have dragged Vito behind his car if he had the chance. They were being mocked, for having a gay man in the family, and the fact that NY killed a made man in NJ's crew without repercussions. Until there were some.
It had nothing to do with Vito. He was mocking them. They knew what he was on when he said "your boy". He was attaching Vito and his ways onto them, exactly what they were worried about.
It's amazing how many people miss the obvious here: Vito was their friend. They didn't want to admit it, but they weren't happy he was dead. ESPECIALLY by a rival crew. Even Carlo, who said Vito "had to go" wasn't happy about it. But it was a fact that in their lifestyle, that was the way it had to be. Gay men are not welcome in that lifestyle. And still aren't today. ............ And then one of the men from that same crew that killed their friend thinks it's funny to come in and start running his mouth about it!? Dude is lucky they didn't kill him a lot slower.
@@billymarino4452 Tony had a chance to kill Vito though and he didn't. Eventually they would have to kill him, but they weren't particularly happy about it.
@@bobbybaccalieri1721 Late reply but your right, Tony didn't really want to kill him. But Vito at the time was Tony's biggest earner. Mobsters are obsessed with money and Tony would have overlooked Vito's sexuality as long as he could get away with it and get a big envelope every week. Guys like Carlo and Silvio aren't directly benefiting financially from Vito (plus they just flat out hate gays), so they would have no problem killing him.
1:01 Carlos's stern reaction is what seems to trigger Dom. It almost seems that he is insulted not getting any laughs. At 1:18 he thinks it over, and decides to go full-on insult - as if he can't stop himself. (Great writing)
I love that Silvio said "hit em!" and then Carlo went for the knife and Silvio was like "Carlo No!" Even at his angriest Silvio just wanted to beat him up and not kill Fat Dom. EDIT: after further review, I stand corrected. It seems it was Fat Dom who said "Carlo No!" and Sil was telling Carlo "go low" and "gut him"
What I think is really special about this scene is that the tension is visually between Dom and Carlo. The shots are all between those 2 with Sil framed slightly behind playing mediator (as he often does) Then, surprisingly Sil is the one to snap and hit Dom.It's totally unexpected and one may say almost out of character for him but it's actually completely in step with how sensitive Sil actually is when it comes to his mates. We are kind of on his side because he is the one member of the crew who never acts out of emotion and it reveals a lot about him. Even afterward when he is trying to clean up, he is kicking himself for being stupid about how he did it, but not showing a second of remorse for the action (which is totally relatable.) A great detail is how he tries to get Carlo not to stab Dom, but as soon as he does he just tries to minimise the damage and rationalise after the fact. It's amazing how we can be on his side through all this, despite the hot blooded murder. Such a great show.
I think he said Carlo No , No. He told him hit this prick. Meaning they were going to beat him up. Not actually kill him. Carlo clearly took it a few steps further using a knife to "hit" Fat Dom. 🔪 🩸 🐷 🍝
@@esotericintrovert1669 I think it was “Hit him,hit this prick, clock him,”1:42 then as soon as carlo reaches for the knife sil says,”no Carlo!Carlo!” 1:45
1st Warning- Very funny Dom, Very cute, I don't quite get it but cute. 2nd Warning- Pretty up on all this shit huh dom? 3rd and Final Warning- Time to hit the trail for metuchen huh, what do ya say? Dom had three chances to stop breaking balls, some people just don't get a clue.
He had a clue, but he thought since he was a high-ranking made guy from New York, he assumed they weren't gonna do shit to him, so he kept talking shit.
2nd warning - 'been reading up on this shit dom?' implying hes been reading about gay characters in private or breaking his balls that dom was gay or a bit too into knowing about gay characters 3rd warning - 'time to hit the trail from a touchup huh, what do ya say' this is silvio saying as a form of a baseball metaphor that fat dom has made his jokes/has had his turn and saying its time for him to leave immediately and go back to his team (NY) or as in baseball, sitting with your team
Great catch, I've watched the scene literally dozens of times and I've never caught that. That's what makes this the best show ever it's been 20 years of constantly watching and I'm still finding things.
Golden rule: If you have to say "I'm just breaking balls" then you have probably gone too far already. I loved the way that it starts off with only the one guy getting pissed off but the moment that Fat Dom crosses the line they both know exactly what has to happen.
