A lot of people in real life are like that. No one enjoys losing. Ive seen countless people get pissed and storm off after losing. Its a normal reaction
@@Legba85 That is what makes this scene even better. I don't know if it was a few scenes before or few episodes, but Chris literally warns them about Silvio in advance, making this scene all the more funnier.
@@johnellizz you’re absolutely wrong bro it’s a reference to the movie “goodfellas”. There is a scene where the actor that plays chris talks back to joe Pesci in a card game (just as silvio talks to the kid in this scene) and joe Pesci shoots and kills chris. That’s the why the Original commentator says “past life”….
Matthew actually handled that pretty good, kept his mouth shut for the most part, didn’t blame Tony for having him do it, and just nodded and kept his head down
Yea I lowkey felt bad for those kids. The high ups had no intentions of ever moving them up and they wanted to be big shit. They just made the wrong moves over and over and over again trying to get recognition that they were never going to get. And it got them killed
Tony’s personality. If you’ve met men like this in the real world. You’d know that these people 100% thrive on breaking the constitution/character/charisma of a man they deem lesser than themselves.
On first watch I don't think I realized Tony did this on purpose but that little grin at 1:10 says it all. Amazing actors + amazing writing and direction = Tremendous television.
@@pdigi3179 That movie has a completely different feel than the show. The show has all these comedic moments sprinkled in the episodes but for most of the movie it was just straight faced.
@@pdigi3179 From what I've read, it's pretty likely that Chase made the movie as a fuck you to fans who couldn't be satisfied with the TV show alone. You're almost guaranteed to be disappointed after such perfection.
The great part is how no one at the table is terribly surprised by Silvio's reaction. You can tell it's not the first time he's gone off the rails while gambling.
@@kartikchandrasekhar2762 yeah but notice no matter how uncomfortable they look about Sil even with him cursing them out and yelling at them directly they never got so uncomfortable or scared to the point that they felt they needed to leave... but with Richie on the other hand all Richie did was threaten one-man quietly and it scared all of the non associates to death to the point that they all were tired and tapped out and just left.
@@user-rk4ey7wh9q take into account they were very tired by the time richie arrived, but yes, Richie is a whole different animal when he's pissed off, love his face off to Chrissy. Many funny and unfunny things happened on this card game, and Richie sure knows how end it right hahajajaja.
Christopher mixing drinks at the back of room while a bunch of guys sit at a nearby table playing cards. Intentional or not, I love the connection to Goodfellas.
Definitely intentional. They pulled the same thing with him in the flashback Christmas scene when Pussy came in dressed as Santa. Also with him shooting the bakery worker in the foot. The earlier seasons had a few callbacks to Spider/Goodfellas
The way Silvio mumbles over his words out of frustration at 2:00 is brilliant and adds to the comedy of the scene and makes it seem like he’s genuinely angry . It’s crazy he wasn’t an actor before the sopranos.
Can't believe the cheese didn't appear again until season five when Phil compromised, grilled it and eat it off the raddy aider. They should have done more with that character.
Frank Renzulli who wrote this episode based this scene on a experience he had while serving a card game of some made guys. Apparently one of the mafiosos playing would take a bite of cheese and throw it down on the floor every time he played a card, and when Renzulli went to go sweep up the cheese the guy gave him a blasting that apparently would have been even to vulgar to write into the episode 😂
There is a strong superstition about brooming somebodys feet would give that people bad luck(something like brooming the luck away from a person), my italian grandma absolutely hated broom passing even near her feet. imagine this but with a short fused mafia guy and you get a recipe for an ass kick.
"Hey Tone you hear what I said? I asked him if he knew about that viagra shit, he said go ahead, I said I heard they were sinking a crate of it down to the titanic to try and raise it heh heh heh heh heh heh"
The best part about this whole scene is that it's a card game set up by the boss of New Jersey, with the players at the table being the underboss of New York, two New Jersey Capos, Frank Sinatra Jr and... an urologist, Doc Ira Fried, who is casually smoking a cigar and outplaying all of them. The balls on this guy.
Yeah but what you've gotta understand that is that the Doctor was a square with a lot legitimacy as far as paperwork and public image. Tony tried his best to keep official people who are viewed as high status around him so he could look more legit and be taken to places he could never get to by being around street guys. The Doc was virtually untouchable, and we see that when his wedding gets robbed and Tony makes the crew give him his rare 1 of 10 car back.
XxShadowGTxX that's true.. however he told the guy to sweep up the crumbs and smirked knowingly that he would be angry.. it's good writing and well acted
This is basically the only time we see Silvio fly off the handle. He makes a point in saying he’s “losing his balls” but the next morning, everyone’s talking about how well he did. He was doing this on purpose. He’s a pro at playing people and there’s a reason he’s a Captain.
"Normally, my prospects of coming back alive from sweeping cheese under a table were 99 out of 100. But this time, when I heard him say "Sweep up that shit over there, especially under Silvio.", I gave myself 50-50."
I watch this daily. What made me laugh today was Tony's subtle manipulation. As soon as he notices Syl losing his shit, he sends the boy over with a broom. Hilarious!
Yeah. People never notice how slick he really is. Same with that bathroom scene with "the wire". Made a big scene about wiretapping when he really just wanted to dry his hands on the guy's shirt.
/i thought that about the bathroom scene I think it was just a coincidence, also low level guys like that aren't supposed to talk to the boss, they were pissing him off
Steve Van Zandt delivery of his line about cheese in socks is so perfect, paints a clear and hilarious image and conveys his frustration in such a funny way.
I didn’t get the “playing hazel” reference until I googled it. Now, I can’t stop laughing This, along with Silvio’s “yeah, zebra! I’m talking to you!!” rant, are his best by far
Silvio is just demonstrating a very common behavior. Aggression at lack of control of the situation. He knows how to stay calm and react and shift plans and money around in the real world when he can see the jabs coming, but sitting with a big pot of fish bait in his lap he worked hard to fill with greedy sharks surrounding him, each one could be more lethal than the other it drives him crazy. I myself when reaching certain levels of stress begin to push objects away from me unconsciously and lash out at a bottle falling over or a person coming up to talk to me. You become defensive over every little thing because your brain can't differentiate the cause of stress from other stimulus.
Let us not loose sight of the fact that while all of this was going on Paulie didn’t say a word because he was too busy thinking way too hard about a possible dick joke. Legend 🤣
@martywhitten3419 I'll survive, and so will you...well, maybe not. You seem to be anal about a single "o" missing in the spelling of a word written by someone whose first language isn't English. You must be fun at parties.
@@cdn1588 I don't go to pArTiEs... I know, words hold zero value... You ever heard of Proof Reading, so you're better able to put that best foot forward? Represent Yourself accordingly 🤔😵💫🙄👏 Work on that verbal judo, You can dO bEtTeR.🙂
People don’t understand the brilliance of Tony in this scene, realizing Silvio is about to explode due to his inept poker skills, knew he couldn’t let Sil scare the new money away with the foreseen “spaz out” attack, so he basically made Bevilaqua “take the brunt of it” by lightning the fuse in the form of sweeping the cheese by his feet and doing the unthinkable and lightly brushing the side of his shoe.
I like how, within a brief three-minute span, some of their characteristics became so evident. Tony orchestrates the scenario to provoke Sil's emotional outburst during the game (something that Chris had previously mentioned). Meanwhile, Paulie is solely focused on delivering the punchline to the joke. :D Brilliant writing
it definitely looked like the kid was about to break character when Sil mentioned the sister's crotch.. his throat expanded for a laugh as they cut to another angle..
Went to Napoli last month. Every time I saw on the menu "Calzone with ricotta and provolone cheese" I couldn't help but think back on this scene. That word is forever tainted by an image of Sil's socks in the morning and Cheesefuck's sister's crotch.
3 things to note here: 1-Tony purposely asked that guy to sweep off the cheese under the table for a laugh. 2-The gang was baiting Scatini to bet more and get braver. 3- Tony knew Scatini would lose but knew he could get the money back no matter what.
1. Correct 2. Doubted, cause one doesn't need to bait fucking degenerate gambler. 3. Not true. Tony was genuinely disappointed and sad that he needed to kick the shit out of his school mate then, but he had to do it.
He trolls him again with that orange soda - "you sure you don't want anything with sugar in it? well enjoy it because that's the last fucking drink you'll ever have!"
Can't think of any greater than this scene when it comes to Silvio. But Richie arrived later and did it again. Now thats acting. Sil was a good character but a poor acting performance tbh. Love the character btw. It's just, Richie as well as Tony or Johnny sack were in several levels above when it comes to acting the shit out off the scene. Also, Phil Leotardo, another acting monster.
Look at Tony's face he told that kid to clean up that shit on purpose esp. under Sil to amuse himself, because he knew Silvio was ready to explode, LOL
***** ehhh i feel like it's more of those things where you know your friend really well like tony knows sylvio pretty well, and it's hilarious when sylvio gets mad. But Tony knows that Sylvio's not gonna hurt anybody, he just gets super tense/upset during the game. not really a definition of a sociopath in this case.
You can point out lots of scenes/lines that show that Tony is messed up. But I honestly don't think this is one of them. All syl did was yell at the kid and it was hilarious. And Tony knew that Syl would yell because he's been friends with him for years. He's MESSING WITH A KID. As an audience, we DID laugh. (well idk about u but it was pretty funny for me seeing syl yelling at him to leave the food on the floor)
