When I was in Japan with my father on a business trip one of the Japanese business associates there gave me a sumo wrestling shirt that he insisted I wear at this fish market we went to. I was 6’5 and 320lbs at the time, I literally had people coming up to me to take photos and talk to me. It was actually one of the coolest experiences ever. I'm a Korean woman in her 20s. My height is about 163cm, and when I weighed 60kg, there were literally no clothes that fit me. The only clothes that fit me were the ones in 'international sizes', in Zara/H&M/etc. Most of the clothes in Korea are in either s/m or so called 'free size', but the free sized ones barely fit me when I was about 55kg. In uni I was 55kg and was called chubby - people here don't even say this behind my back, they just spit it out right in my face lol - and after being anorexic for a semester I was 49kg. Only then did the 'free sized' clothes comfortably fit me. As Josh portrayed, fat shaming others in their faces sure is a horrible habit of our country, but the clothing industry also contributes a lot to 'compulsory downsizing' of people, especially women. There simply is nothing to wear if you are slightly 'chubby' by Korean standards. In my opinion our openly fat-shaming culture and ridiculous one-size-fits-all clothing industry work hand in hand to diffuse body dysmorphia throughout the society. Although our country has the second lowest obesity rate among OECD countries, most people consider themselves fat because others openly call them so. Embracing body positivity and letting it permeate the clothing industry thus forcing it to change is crucial in our country.

You're a strong person I feel. I'm sorry you had to go through that, it sounds horrible. Having basically only 2 different sizes sounds insane to me. Josh did a good job portraying the downsides of both the cultures. Both of the cultures trivialize the actual importance of a healthy weight, which is to have a properly functioning body. One culture puts one's weight on the pedestal because they perceive weight as a medium to fit into society and gain social approval, and one culture on the other hand glorifies one being proud of having an unhealthy body weight, also for social and societal approval. Both excessively superficial in their own ways and depict the facade of body image and its commercial marketing. Even though people see him just as a funny guy, this guy is intellectually gifted as to humor or comic writing. Good job Josh 👏

I'm so glad to hear she recovered. Anorexia kills people. We talk about it a fair bit in society passively, but it's truly a dangerous disease that erodes the mind and body. Obesity does the same, just on the other side of the coin. Only difference is that it works slower. An apple a day doesn't give you all the nutrients you need at all.

Asians are pretty direct in general regarding weight. Basically it's everyone's business to comment. When I lost a ton of weight, I received loads of comments from my relatives that I am getting too skinny. Then when I put on just 5kg, my great grandaunt literally squeezed my arms and said, "Aren't you getting too fat?" I was 50kg (158cm) 😂

@whatever5695

@@a.s.1737 I guess it depends on how people view. Like if some of my relatives comment on my weight then I don't think to much cuz in asia it's like a common thing. If you met your relatives after a long time they will be like "woo you got so skinny you should eat more! " Or " you are getting fat, maintain ur weight or you'll get diabetes " And honestly this comments are so common it doesn't really effect to many person. But obviously there are some people who makes actual nasty comment abt weight. So I guess outside of asia people might find ts toxic but honestly it depends on person how they are saying it. When our relatives say it, they dont tell us to become too skinny or too fat. They tell us to get healthy body.
@a.s.1737
@a.s.1737 Год назад
@@whatever5695 Just because it's common doesn't mean it's okay. Abuse towards children is common worldwide. Violence against women is common worldwide. Should we accept these things because they have become normalized? Toxic cultural attitudes towards body weight and physical appearance are detrimental to one's well-being. Southeast Asians are especially vulnerable as mental illness is stigmatized in many communities, which makes it difficult to talk about or seek treatment. One's body weight or how they look to the naked eye are not accurate representations of overall physical and mental health. These are simply ways to discriminate against others under the guise of caring about them.

I'm a Bengali American and I've had a couple people who were like family or family friends who hadn't seen me in years immediately comment on my weight as soon as they saw me. Like, these were at least two separate occasions but they said almost the same thing. "You got really fat!". My mom looks at my belly randomly and sighs. She has also taken to wrapping her arms around my waist out of nowhere and clings to me but acts like it's difficult I guess??? And it's really uncomfortable because actually I don't like to hug my mom at all, and this is like a hug but feels like I'm simultenously being mocked. But because I'm in America I experience that weight culture as well (well I guess I'll never know what people say behind my back but whatever). So, my personal take on these two different approaches? They suck. For me, that is. Neither has put me on track and likely never will. I am simultaneously seeking therapy to help me with my weight, my poor self-esteem, and self-defeating behavior. And my boyfriend is also really supportive, he's my constant cheer leader and he is always searching for the best way to keep my morale up. Yet, I still have not been able to make any strides in losing weight. I know for a fact it's not due to lack of knowledge about diet, or how to burn calories. It's not that I don't know how to cook for myself, I'm a good home cook. It's not that I don't have the money to afford a better diet. Can't be a lack of time, I have lots of time. I'm not disabled so there's no reason I can't get my ass to move more either. As far as I can tell, I don't have any logistical obstacles, just mental ones. Which is the exact kind of obstacle people shit on the most in this discussion. People on the internet just call that being weak. It's a reflection of how I am inferior as a person, possibly I'm even morally corrupt. I just wish people would judge others less for what they choose as their preferred motivation or environment when dealing with weight. Have you ever heard those stories about people who have been a smoker all their life and then one day have a reason a change and then they quit cold turkey, no going back? I come across those anecdotes every so often. But I ALSO come across the story where people have to hit their lowest moment before they change. What I'm trying to say is that, when it comes to issues that are created by mental obstacles, there are just so many fucking ways for that to exist within us. There isn't a cookie-cutter solution to it all. What has worked for some people will not work for me. What will eventually work for me will not suit someone else. That's normal. That's part of everything. We don't all benefit from the same medication. Not all forms of cancer are treated the same way. A feel-good story about a girl who is special and talented might light a fire in your soul, but it might make me think that I'm better off dead instead of wasting space. I am begging the universe to be gentle to me right now.

This probably won't do much but I personally started accepting my body when I started studying pre-medicine/medicine. You realize that only uneducated and illiterate people have so much to say on how much a person weighs and should weigh. When you start studying topics like nutrition, physiology and basically everything related to human body, you come to realize that every body has a purpose of it's existence. I would workout for at least 2 hours a day with intervals in between, would eat healthy and also walk my gsd but still couldn't see any change in appearance even after 2 years of consistency. I gave up but then I realized that although there was no change on the outside, I had certainly had a huge change on the inside. I could do hold a plank for 5 minutes instead of 30s. I could do a bridge and I could stretch and touch my palm on the floor (I couldn't do either before I started.) So I got more invested in this topic and did more research. Our bodies especially a woman's body experiences changes due to aging, lifestyle and hormonal changes. Your body is protecting your organs and giving you the required support to undergo labour (in case of women). It helps you during menstruation to help you take those cramps like a real champ. It's not entirely bad to think of your body as "flawed." But when you do point out those flaws, ask yourself: 1. What is the reason for this specific flaw? 2. Do I control it or completely eliminate it? 3. CAN I control or eliminate the flaw? You work accordingly and you'll know then that not every hate statement needs to be taken to the heart and some statements are just entirely ignorant and uneducated opinions. There are cases where women gain weight because of hormonal changes and aging whether it's because of menstruation, menopause, child birth etc. You cannot eliminate that. You can only 'control' it but to very little extent so no big expectations and your only expectation should be to be healthy. People gain weight because of thyroid disorders, mental disorders which also includes EDs etc so you work on treating that issue instead of worrying about your weight because again your only expectation should be to be healthy. People gain weight because of unhealthy lifestyle including not working out and not being educated on nutritional values. I can't do anything to make you enjoy working out and eating healthy. That's literally impossible. Only you can do it. Find your kind of workouts. Workout doesn't always have to consist of crunches and pushups. You could literally dance dance dance with your hands hands hands or just walk or even just some loser ass bed workouts including leg lifts and idk maybe bicycles because it's all about getting your body to move. Little by little. Personally speaking, I don't healthy at all. I just can't get myself to do that and as a med student, I don't have time to prepare myself good food so I make up for it by working out, I don't have time for that even but walking my dog is enough. I do short cardios on the weekend but some people do the opposite like if they don't like working out, they'll just eat healthy instead. So you find your pace. Just know that your weight isn't harming anyone! If people can accept smokers who are literally portrayed as "cool and aesthetic" in movies and TV shows even though we all know passive smoking is far more dangerous than active smoking, then these people have no right to comment on someone's weight but if they still feel the need to then who are we to stop them? After all free speech. But you can feel better about yourself knowing you're not hypocritical, you're educating yourself, you're trying to live a healthy life, you're going physically and mentally stronger AND you're minding your own business! Well, as you said, what workes for you does not need to work for someone else, neither does my stuff need to work for you, but maybe it will, even though I am a man and you are a woman but that does not need to mean anything necessarily, so I give it a shot: Run. At first 3 times a week. Start with like 500m to 1KM?...and end up about 10-14km mark. And then add in muscle training and flexibility training in order to boost your progress.... Never give up. Stay consistent. During the times that you feel like not working out...during those times you will especially get your ass up and work out, cause what awaits you in the end is not just the apperiance(which needs to become a side goal to you, not your main goal), but speed, endurance, flexibility and power! Aim to be stronger and stronger in whatever you do, if there is a 10KM run in your town or area, then train for it, aim for the top spot, make that your goal, enjoy the healthy competition with those others that all aim for the same: the number 1, the first place, the undisputed VICTORY! And regardless of that, awaken your curiosity towards your own body, so for yourself how far you can go, how strong you can get, what is the apex of your body's abilities, that should motivate you, cause all of that is power and motivation from within yourself, its an endless loop that gets only greater the more time passes by....what other people think, say, believe, you give a crap, cause you are not doing it for them, you are not doing it to be liked, you are doing it for yourself, your bloodline, your abilities, your power, your victories and your health. Thats how it is for me, but I hope that it can help you as well.

@@photographychannel3875 I understand conceptually that me working my body out would mean I would likely lose weight and definitely gain power. As I said, it's a mental thing that compels me to eat more, and definitely a deep deep DEEP dislike for working out that I trying to figure out how to change. I literally cried the last time I worked out. Which is why prescribing me to work out more is pointless. I'm not at the stage of figuring out how to work out. I'm trying to figure out how to even begin to make myself make the right choices for my body. I don't think that is a stage that everyone can actually relate to experiencing.

Body shaming is so toxic period. Even if someone is at an unhealthy weight and needs help in gaining or losing and medically isn't doing well, how the F is shaming someone supposed to help? It just makes them feel bad, especially if they are in fact healthy and energetic at the weight they're at. If someone is under/over (medically, not a societal standard), they likely are struggling with something. How is that worth making fun of or shaming? We don't shame people for having cancer or breaking their leg. It doesn't make sense. We do shame people for having mental issues though and I think that's because society thinks anything mental and weight wise is a choice.
