The Scout HD is a perhaps under-appreciated goggle option for HDZero. In this review, I cover the pros and cons of these goggles and give you my impressions from testing them.

So nice to see a review for these goggles - they are definitely underrated. I really like them for spectators and children because there is no focus adjustment to mess with and they are so simple to use (just plug in power, that's it!)

I'm surprised you are prepaired to overlook the lack of product support while endorsing these, or maybe I shouldn't be surprised. I believe they are very good when they are working but not good if Fat Shark are not taking responsibility for after sales support.

Third of your videos I've watched in a row. I suppose that warrants a sub.

I' m really happy with my Scout HD! They are so much better than analog on the Eachine EV800D! I bought the Scouts because they are the cheapest option to get into digital FPV. I also like the idea that other manufacturers can buy Divimath chips and make their own HDZero compatible products. It would be great if the voltage warning threshold could be changed. One thing to point out might be that the goggles are only available on GetFPV. I paid around 25% on top to import them to Germany, but they were still al least 200$ cheaper than DJI Goggles in the end.

Very solid review! I've been debating these because I want to mess about with HD0, however I'm not super keen on just the receiver module, and I already have a setup for analogue. The thing that does make me apprehensive is the future of this. Not sure if I want to buy something that's likely to not get produced much longer, doesn't bode well for support/repairs etc.

Some who have used these goggles have noticed a phenomenon where latency slowly increases and then resets. I didn't call this out in my video because it wasn't something that I noticed or was bothered by in my flying, but it is worth a mention. If you are particularly sensitive to this sort of thing, these goggles may not be the right choice for you. However--I'm betting most pilots at the level to notice that are already using high-end OLED goggles for their faster refresh rates anyway, and as I mentioned in the video, I'd say if that's you, it's best to stick with the OLED.

Considering the cobra x was a good deal for $230 a year ago I'd say these are a good deal for starting off with hdzero for $250

I tried updating the firmware for my Fatshark Scout HD goggles. I completed the steps but after rebooting my goggles, it powers up but I only get a black screen. I tried reverting to all the previous firmware I found from divimath as well as the firmware found on this website without any result. I still have a black screen after giving the goggles a couple of minutes to update the firmware. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Update 2/3/2022: The current state of Scout HD support seems to be that Fat Shark will help users get a refund if they are unable to fix the units, due to the "beta release" nature of the Scout HD. After I had posted this review, some news came out that made it sound like they were not supporting the goggles at all and were instead sending customers to HDZero for support. Since then, it seems that Fat Shark is indeed providing some hardware support, but will more likely help the customer get a refund from the retailer if they have a major hardware issue. Interestingly, they also seem to be planning a full release of the goggles for the future. Here is a comment from Fat Shark itself (this comment was left on a Mad's Tech video about the repair issue): "The ScoutHD was never officially released; what you bought and tested was clearly identified as a beta unit. Unfortunately due to current chip prices it was not viable to go to full release at the time. I actually expected more issues and am quite pleased at the ScoutHD's field performance. We were hoping to be able to continue to service the beta units with production units (that never materialized), however being a beta run, a recall was budgeted in and if we can't fix a unit we will arrange any failures to be returned to the retailer for a full refund. As you pointed out, the beta unit performed quite well and I'm looking forward to seeing the ScoutHD in a future release." ------------------------- Original comment below: Since I posted this review, it has come out that a user tried to get hardware support from Fat Shark on these goggles and Fat Shark stated they were not doing any hardware or warranty repairs on the Scout HD. I had stated in this video that the support situation going forward was unknown, but I felt that this new information was important enough to call it out in the comments here. If you buy these goggles, it's very likely you won't be able to get manufacturer repairs on the hardware. Should you still buy them? That's up to you. GetFPV (the only seller of the Scout HD) has a return policy, so I wouldn't be worried about getting a DOA unit. You do certainly run the risk of the goggles breaking down the road and it being difficult or impossible to get a repair. On the other hand, goggles don't tend to break too frequently, so perhaps it'd work well for years to come. I was really disappointed to hear about this and I find it very unfortunate that Fat Shark isn't standing behind this product.

It looks like the weak point is where the SMA connectors attach to the circuit board. The goggle housing itself doesn't provide any support. If you get these goggles be careful with bumping or bending antenna on the goggles. Perhaps hot glue or something else to brace it would help.

@@etxfpv598 Thanks I was wondering ...break what and where? Until now I've never had any goggles break on me. *Crossing fingers*

Great review. I've been thinking about getting the SharkByte module for my Skyzone Cobra X box goggles. But given that the Scout HD goggles are the same price as the module, perhaps I'd be better off buying them and keeping the Cobra for my analog quads.
@ATXAirborne
@ATXAirborne 2 года назад
Honestly I think that’s a great option unless you think you’d get different goggles later that you would want to move the receiver to. Comparing the Cobra X with the receiver to the Scout HD, the Scout HD is significantly lighter and less bulky.

@@ATXAirborne Good point, I didn't think about being able to move the module to new goggles down the road.

What antennas do you recommend on adding for the scout hd? Or which are you using?
@ATXAirborne
@ATXAirborne 2 года назад
In most cases you want to use RHCP Omni antennas, and it is preferable to use ones that stick up above your head for the best reception. I used Lumenier AXII 2 antennas. Sometimes if I want a more compact setup for travel I’ll use Foxeer stubby lollipop antennas, but the reception on those is notable worse if I am facing away from the drone while flying.

Great video! I have the Skyzone 02c goggles. Would it be better if I went with the scout hd over the unit? I don't mind box goggles and at times I prefer them.
@ATXAirborne
@ATXAirborne 2 года назад
I think compared to the 02c you'd definitely notice the increased resolution of the Scout HD. I suspect the screen may not be quite as bright, but depending on which other box goggles you have used, it's probably as bright as those were. I think for you the Scout HD would be a great option unless you think you'd buy high end OLED goggles for analog sometime soon.
