He either saw it as another trial or just believed that he somehow hadn’t shown enough devotion and/or hadn’t punished enough heretics. He just seemed completely off his rocker to realize just how horrendous he was in his fanaticism.
@@theloweffortchannel7211 He would've had a really hard time coping that he somehow ended up in the same place that all those heretics he tortured to death.
By far my most favorite antagonist ever. And in a universe where we kinda of assume all the bad guys are demons, Mozgus stands out. Best arc and best antagonist hands down. I'm also a sucker for dark Christian imagery and all that so Mozgus is 😙👌
Father Mozgus is a perfect example of the human fear. The idea that humans can and will go to any length to achieve their goals or get what they want according to their beliefs , regardless of how it can affect others. Osamu Dazai’s book “no longer human” also does a great job in capturing the human fear
Well, he certainly appears to be a rational, psychologically balanced and aesthetically conventional fellow...I trust him to fairly disseminate the holy word of God. Man's got an honest face.
Before I actually started learning about berserk, I wholeheartedly thought mozgus was a robot or something like that because of how perfectly blocky and large he is. His head is a fucking cube
@@SomeGuy-mt4hq I wouldn't say he looks robotic, but rather similar to depictions of Golems or clay dolls: smooth and flat faced with an extremely pronounced brow and nose.
Loved the Arc. Also lover Miss Luca. She was probably the only Berserk's character with an "happy " ending. She was awesome and an example of a truly good character.
There might not be a happy ending for her, since Falconia might end up similarly to Skelig. Also Jerome is not with her anymore so there is no one to defend her against apostles.
@@GrimFaceHunter Isn't she with Ricker crew now? Our young dude got some pretty good team on his side, kushan archmage, bunch of capable assasin's and not to mention he got a good brain.
One of my fav characters in the manga. Crazy, sadistic, absolute fanatic yet there was still more humanity in him than in many characters of Berserk. Why? After all he took under his care people that were shunned by the society and seen as monsters and he gave them education, family and purpose. He really cared about his deformed helpers. He is still evil and disturbing person but there was genuine goodnes in him too.
Well he did give them all those things but it also served himself in making them fanatically loyal to him. He might have loved them but only as his tools. So i dont think there was any real goodness in him. He believed he was doing gods will by acting out sadism.
Mozgus was a super devout religious authoritarian fanatic. He gave anyone who strayed from God (or just anyone who spoke out against him in general) a brutal and disgusting torture or death. I believe he also gave a description as to the history of Gaiseric’s kingdom and what went on below the tower.
True but he was a example of living people in are world that take it to far and feel like what there doing is right the bitter sweet of the truth of right and wrong at least in there mind there right
Well if we assume Old Testament even existed in Berserk (which likely did not) then what he was doing was justice and righteous, since Old Testament allowed violence if it was against pagans or truly faithless/immoral people. But if it's a new testament then Mozgus could be considered immoral/wrong. His character is really complex in that he's not 100% evil or 100% good, he's inbetween.
He really was crazy in the most insane villain in berserk and he was not even an apostle. He was like a Frodo from Hunchback Notre Dame had muscles and he was more twisted. He became a pseudo apostle later on. He was Guts's dangerous opponent. At the end, when he died he's not going to Heaven.
@@AH-is5yg but not the most in his mind what he was doing was right there are a few characters in the story that make him look like a saint the few are all about there inner desires of malice and torture and pain that they do for themselves mozgus truly believed what he was doing was right for the world of god not inner pleasure
@@Tray3tar I get that, but at the end, when Guts kill him, he threw off the tower. Mozgus falling and burning is like him falling to Hell. When he gets to Hell, he will realize what he did was wrong.
To elaborate why I think he's a good villain. It's because he's a true believer in what he is doing and that makes him just as dangerous as monster ever could be and then some. PLUS as someone who was raised christian, I was surrounded by people like this and the whole Conviction Arc hit me in the feels so many times. So I identify very much with him and the arc he is a part of since I know where a lot of it is "coming from" , how his victim must feel, and the whole setting in general. It is truly my favorite Berserk Arc.
The scary part is that in 40k terms he would A) be kinda the "good" guy B) not be the worst person to meet.. heck he is kinda solid midfield for a religous zealot. The only good thing about that all is that he wouldn't be an inqusitor most likely barring him from the most destructive weapons but as a preacher there is still enought stuff to let him go unhinged
Yeah Warhammer doesn't really have a "good" side. I really like that, cause it gives thr impression of: War sucks. Sometimes you get born into a wartorn place, everyone out for everyone. But you cant give up and hope for the best, you MUST take a stand. But no matter what side you're on, you're never in the right
Despite his insanity, theres something to be said for Mozgus' bravery and honesty. He could have easily been a religious hypocrite who is willing to put others through pain but not himself. But not only does he put himself through punishment all in the name of his "faith" but he willingly faces down the blood blobs JUST to protect his faith. That is some dedication.
Most people say their favorite arc is either golden age or falcon of the millennium empire. But personally the conviction arc is hands down my favorite and it isn’t close.
This is why I disagree with the position of a pope in Christianity. To claim that you speak for God, to say that only you can decide the fates of others on behalf of God isn’t just the pinnacle of arrogance, it’s dangerous. It allows you to justify the most heinous and depraved acts while believing you’re faultless and chosen
Looking at what popes did throughout history and the church in general. Sex slaves, money laundering, funding illegal activities, wars and other stuff. The organizational might as well be the spawn of the devil
When Schierke and Farnese went into Casca's dream, Farnese summons Mozgus into battle since she still sees him as an image of strength and an indomitable wall.
I'm sorry but when you said he prostrates himself at max velocity i just imagined mozgus not just letting himself fall but literally power diving down like hes trying to break concrete with his forehead
Thanks so much for depicting the Inquisition better than many content creators on RU-vid. I’d like to add some points: -Bernardo Gui mostly exerced in Languedoc when the Cathars heresy happened, in 13th century. He had nothing to do with the Spanish Inquisition, known for being more violent (who showed up later, after the Reconquista, end of 15th centhury). -Among inquisitors of his time, torture induced many debates, some of them being against it (for many reasons, mostly thinking it was inefficient). Bernardo Gui was one of them, as he wrote in his « Inquisitor’s guidebook ». -The name of the rose is an awesome movie (and book) but Umberto Ecco wasn’t very accurate on the inquisitors. These are just details I wanted to share, thanks again for such high quality content.
It’s sad but it makes me wonder. Under other circumstances Mozgus could’ve used his devout faith for good. We’ve seen small tiny bits of Mozgus having a heart, such as how he gave the deformed people home and did seem to care for them. But alas, he was far far too evil and deluded by his own devotion. Im not saying he’s a good person, and it’s actually crazy how people like Mozgus have existed in the past. If he used all the effort that he puts in torturing and taking lives into helping spread religion and helping his community, the world of berserk could have been just slightly more hospitable, even if his religion was a sham. He is one of my favorite characters in all of berserk.
people with such a strong and pure convition NEVER existed....in reality they were all selfish and corrupted by their own power....they did not TRULY belive what they preached only used it to further their personal gains....
he was secretly given powers by the egg of the perfect world. same as the heretics leader. he was a psuedo apostle which means an apostle made him into what he was and not his own sacrifice.
Like Rashad said, he was so called pseudo-apostle. A bit like the bug-people and "elves" that Roshinu created. Difference is he wasn't a servant to the apostle but was shaped by his dreams into that angel-thingie.
> The idea that "divine" justice is inflicted upon any who don't share you beliefs is unfathomable in modern times My dude have you looked outside recently?
Father Mozgus had a strong religious desire to commit violence and pain. So it makes sense that he was a better fight for Guts than a full apostle whose desire to eat, screw, or live in general was their dominant desire in their ascendancy.
I am devastated i will never see the end of this story. Easily the greatest manga of all time. Miura is the progenitor of the dark fantasy genre in all media.
When i first read this arc I was convinced Mozgus was an apostle and was pretty taken aback by the realization he is just a normal dude. Well.. normal isn’t particularly the word for it.
Yes! Obviously I dont think I'll ever see Zodd whipping around the sky or Slan coalescing into a woman to bang me, but a religious zealot who's faith runs w such conviction that he does inhuman things for said faith? Very very plausible
@@lordfizzz Not to mention that despite being such a brutal and fanatic character in some ways he was more human than most people in the world. He took under his care people that were shunned by the society and seen as monsters due to their deformities and afflictions and yet he took them in, gave them purpose and family of sorts. It's really a shame he was such a brutal fanatic, otherwise he'd be capable of more good than many people in Berserk world.
I still can't believe that guy was NOT an apostle at first. Is his face really normal?! Plus I actually *MISSED* somehow the egg thing depressed apostle/part of the key to break the barrier between imagination and real world. I just didn't even see the thing in the image. So, I assumed at the time that the inquisitors were all apostles to begin with and I didn't get it.
He is considered to be one of my favorite villains from the manga, He is like a far more brutal version of Herr Star from Preacher, which I recommend checking out, if you have not seen the comic or the show based on it.
Herr Starr was ruthless, but at least he would kill people instantly, most of the time. He would not spend time torturing them if he had nothing to obtain from the victim. I think Jesse would be the only one he would torture for personal amusement.
@@paganavenger8920 I agree. It makes the stuff he goes through later so much more enjoyable, even if some of the things were way out of line, because he's such a horrible person.
I like to believe that religion is created to help us deal with the aspect of death to believe that there is a soothing feeling of afterlife, for us to unite and be guided, sadly there's also a fact someone deviously can claim that God speaks through them and can get away from most crime.
Religion is the justice we pay to God. not a way to deal with the afterlife if think about it the best way to cope with the after life is to not think about it at all.
Mozgus In heaven be like …. God: arise Mozgus Mozgus: my lord “ proceeds to bow to god” God: get up, you stupid fool Mozgus: my lord wha wha what wrong God: you have commented countless sins in your life Mozgus: what are you talking about? I did everything for you My life’s work is in your name. God: you’re life work makes me puck Mozgus: but but I I God: you have tortured, killed, and massacred hundreds of innocent and you claim to have been my messenger laughable Mozgus: I God: i know a place for you to be in you damed many people to hell now it you’re turn.
0:04 The perfect "establishing shot" for this video, establish that he's absolutely balls-to-the-wall, pants-on-head, "swing a book at somebody and don't hit with the spine" crazy.
Considering that the story about the sage and the skull king is related to void, I can't help but feel on some level the other one about the woman and the village may actually be Slann. Considering the likely huge connection of the Holy See and the Godhand, its possible that their religious stories tie back to the Godhand(And goes into the theory, at least one I have, that the Holy Sees goal is to eliminate witches and other such people who could perceive and even oppose the Godhands work or at least act as a opposing force).
Hearing that Father Mozgus is inspired by the character from In the Name of the Rose Barnardo Gui does not surprised a truly intense and evil character for sure. If you like Sean Connery and the character of Mozgus I highly recommend In the Name of the Rose cast is great, story is really good with plenty of twists and turns, and one of the of the original James Bond's finest roles as I have watched it sense I was a kid.
A fact that people need to remember about the Spanish inquisition is that their jurisdiction was only people who claimed to be Christians, unlike their depictions, including berserk, they did not disturb the faithful of other religions.
I'm a Catholic (but I don't act like one) and when I read this arc for the first time and saw this BLOCKHEAD and what he did "in the name of god" it got under my skin and got me a little offended a bit. BUT THAT WAS A GOOD THING art is supposed to do that sometimes.
Love your Berserk content. Especially long-form detailed breakdowns of the subjects you choose. Keep up the good work Edit: The horror of Father Mozgas is that he's a true believer. He wholy believes he's doing the right thing. Though there is a contradiction in his belief. One that he can't see.
The burning was exclusively reserved to what was called ''relapse''. A relapse is a person who abjured his heresy and then goes back to it. '' I swear never reverring that goat thing again'' [proceed to rever that goat thing 3 seconds after release] --> burning It was exceptional, most of the time the convicted had a fair trail, for exemple in France it would have been better to be judged by inquisition than by common law as the church's man where softer and more fair. If I remember well there where less than 50 people burnt in France in more than 300 years of inquisition. For all Europe in 5 centuries there were only 3000 death penalty pronounced by the various inquisitions. Most of the time the sentance was spiritual like prayers, penitence etc The more you know
Exactly. I like to believe that it is an inherent part of human nature to worship something, whether it be God or something else. It is naturally a part of our psyche. So in a way we are born to worship.
I always feel conflicted by characters like this as he truly believes in all senses that what he is diong is right not objectively he's just right by law of the world this is shown when he damages his knees but he does hideous things such as bash peoples heads in but as he was raised as well as all of his servants they were raised to believe fully in God (the God hand) and to not stray from him much of berserk is like this guts is a perfect example as he was a pure as bieng in the berserk world you could but in that world no statement is more true than eat or be eaten as if you don't pillage and slaughter you will die and suffer as even nice people like Rickert had to kill sometimes to keep living as no one is truly pure in the world of berserk
