It was NYFD until 1865 when the city switched from a volunteer force to a paid fire department. NYFD then became FDNY to distance the new professional fire department from the gang like volunteer department.

The department's official name is the Fire Department of New York. Hence, FDNY.

Anyone in public cannot have any expectation of privacy. And photographing or video recording anyone in pubic is legal.
