Video taken on June 13th, 2011 for the weekly noon test of Wichita Kansas's Outdoor warning siren system. This is a 1950s Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000 siren located on the Wichita Water Works building. Siren is tested in both Alert and Attack (Growl) Modes. This sirens blower stays activates after the Alert cycle for some odd reason. You can also hear the Whelen Vortex just about a mile west of this siren.

now THAT is what a thunderbolt is supposed to do! the fact that you heard that low pitch that loud from where you were standing means it's doing it's job. you would probably not hear any non blower sirens low end that far away as well...

Big ol' 6MC(A1) Blower under that bigger cover. It really makes The Thunderbolt have a distinct tone. Love it. Update:Siren is gone and most likely scrapped.

@amtrak3501 Yep it is! it used to have the normal T-bolt screen on it but it was in bad shape. It probably blew off or was removed at some point. I do not know for sure.

@sirenaddict Yep. They are basically just an omnidirectional thunderbolt without a blower.

That has a nice, husky tone. I love to hear a T-bolt where the blower stays on until the chopper has completely stopped.

To me, they were the best of the best...I lived about1/2-3/4 of a mile from one (right across the street from my Aunt and Uncle) and under my g/f at the time's house)...when the weather was cold and dry...it sounded like it was in the room with you; warm and damp...you could barely hear it...but on a dark, stormy night when the dual tones went off for a tornado warning...caused goose bumps to crawl up your back!!

@MKIIProductions Yeah, This T-Bolt only did one cycle of attack. You could really hear the Whelen Vortex from here. Thanks.

Wow this one does the same thing its rotator does not stop in between signals like ST Paul MN's Thunderbolt 1000s i wonder if Federal made them to do this or is the timer set to go for three minutes non stop ?

Out of curiosity, does anyone know when these T-Bolts were manufactured? I've seen some posts that date them to the '50's. When I lived in Cleveland, MS they installed two of them for the VFD's and as a weather siren...wondering if they were new or re manufactured? They used them until the late 1990's to early 2000's.

The first round of Thunderbolts in Wichita went in between 1952-1953.

@garyhstorms10 Actually a chlorine leak since they use the gaseous form, but yes that's what I mean. Although it is a part of the county system as the videographer said, they could still use it to warn of a chlorine leak.

@sirenfan97 aren't thunderbolt 1000's and 100T's choppers the same as model 2''s and 2T's?

Justin Lynch Sometimes. Model 2s will have the same choppers and motors as 1000s and Model 2Ts have 4/5 ports while only a few 1000Ts had that. Thunderbolt 1000Ts mainly had 5/6 choppers

I bet the time delay relay is shot. It's doing the same thing that mine did over at East High School. we had to replace the relay unit. This siren is hard to service because of it being on top of the roof lol. They won't be in a hurry to fix it because they don't worry about the attack signal working as much these days. Nice video, by the way.

Maybe they'll put a new chopper in it. They did it to the other sick 1000. That one is a 1000T now.
