That shot at 10:42 is actually insanely hard to do off a wonky ball like that, to prepare late, over run it yet contort the wrist under and inside it enough to hit it wide enough but still flick it with spin to land short and centred away from the sideline, that's real genius hand work in tennis right there. So easy to miss it wide as you can never practice it yet somehow he pulls it off. The Maestro, greatest of all time in pure tennis ability.
@@pauljennewein3434 Federer potentially lost 2 slams and an Olympic Gold Medal because of del Potro Federer had great momentum going into US Open in both 2009 and 2017, but del Potro somehow managed to stop him Federer did beat del Potro in 2012 Olympics in the SF, but that match dragged on for so long that Federer's stamina was basically depleted when facing Murray in the final (keep in mind Federer just beat Murray on the exact same court a few weeks earlier for Wimbledon)
Thanks for this, 7ennis! Hadn't ever watched it; Murray played well enough & served pretty great, but Fed was awful. That simple missed overhead at the start of the 2nd set basically summed up the match for him. (Is this the first time he didn't break even once in a 5-set grass match? Or 5-set match on any surface?) In any case, glad to have you back...and would love (if possible) condensed versions of Fed's 2012 Wimby semis & finals vs ND & AM. 😀🙏🏽
@thesoccergod You got it! Murray was playing very well, but you are right. If Federer hadn't played such a long match against Del Potro, he might have had a better chance to do some damage. This has definitely got to be one of the most one-sided matches in Federer's career on grass, not to his benefit. I would love to cover the 2012 Wimby SF and F at some point!
Federer was tired, but you can't take away from Murray. Winning tennis tournaments is about being able to have enough energy to win all of your matches. You could say that Federer should have won faster against Del Potro--then he would not be as tired. It also can't really be said that Federer had a harder path to the title just because of the Del Potro match--if I recall Murray defeated Djokovic in straight sets on his way to the gold medal here.
Bro that’s so good love your channel ! By any chance can you please do the Shelton shapovalov Wimbledon 2024 match ? Either on RU-vid or if not on Patreon ! Thanks
I would say his 2016 version is just as good if not better. Honestly in the golden era (08-16), he was arguably the best player in 2 periods, mid 12- mid 13 and 2016.
While Federer was obviously affected by his SF bout against Delpo here people always ignore he fact that in the Wimbledon final Andy looked like the better player in the first two sets while there were regular outdoor conditions (Roger was really fortunate to hang on in that second set an managing to break at the end of it). Once the roof got closed is that Roger clearly starting dominating. Perhaps if the roof remained open this could've been the same result in Wimbledon as well.
Probably not, as that was the one that equalled Sampras's record, and without it, he would not currently be ahead of Sampras or Djokovic for most Wimbledons
No, he was asked about this and explicitly said no, Wimbledon was his priority. He has a gold in doubles, that's as important for him as any singles gold.
