Learn femoral nerve flossing exercises for pain in the front of your leg that you can do at home. Femoral nerve flossing exercises are also called femoral nerve glide exercises. Nerve flossing for the femoral nerve can effectively release and free the nerve from areas where it may be entrapped. These exercises can provide relief if you're experiencing pain in the front of your thigh which is often caused by femoral nerve compression.
There are also a number of different ways to perform femoral nerve flossing exercises. You can floss the femoral nerve standing up as shown in this video, but you can also do it laying down on your back or stomach or kneeling.
Try doing these exercises in 10 repetitions sets 3x/day to start. It may take a little while to "free up" the nerve, so be patient with it.
If you've been doing femoral nerve flossing and your pain isn't improving or is worsening, you may want to consider seeing a chiropractor, physical therapist, or orthopedic MD for more extensive rehab or other treatments.
Pain is down the back of your leg will likely respond better to sciatica flossing exercises instead of femoral nerve flossing exercises. See the link on the end screen of this video for a demo on how to floss the sciatic nerve.

I watched quite a few videos to floss my femoral nerve. You are the only one that demonstrated how to do it if a person couldn't bend the knee. I can't, so, Thank you verymuch!

That actually helped!!! Thank you!!! I had a hip replacement just over a year ago and everything has been fine. I'm 67 years old, but in relatively good shape and quite active. I consider my operation a huge success. But about a month ago I started noticing that I couldn't put weight on that leg without it feeling like it was going to give out, as well as kind of a 'funny bone' feeling on the side of my hip and along my quad. It seems to come and go, and is worse some times than others, but always there. I think a combination of things may have brought it on. I started doing heavy weight training about a month previous, including deadlifting and squatting. Even though I was using proper technique, I think this was a contributing factor. Also, I know from years of trial and error that eating a lot of wheat products makes my joints more sore and inflamed and I had binged on them the day before the symptoms were at their worst - I couldn't even walk for about a day and a half. And the third factor is simply my age. My chiropractor confirmed that my L3 is a bit out of alignment, and that is one of the places that the femoral nerve can get pinched. The other place, from what I have found out through some searching, is where the nerve goes through the Psoas muscle. And my psoas is definitely tight, as are most of the other muscles in my legs. I stretch pretty regularly, but don't seem to make much progress in flexibility. Thanks again for this video!

I know this is an old message, but I feel compelled to make a comment. Thank you for sharing your story after your hip replacement surgery. I am having the very same issues you described although I did not get them from weightlifting, but I’m definitely going to get my L3 checked out and also the psoas muscle looked at. right now, I’m pretty miserable. Just did the exercise above and I do believe it has helped….. in fact, it was immediate relief! Thank you so much for sharing

Thank you so much! I thought the problem was in my muscles, but the exercise immediately took away some of the pain in my glute and thigh. Never made the connection between both problems because one is in the back and the other one in the front of the leg...

I have that nerve pain feeling in the thigh sort of leading to the knee but nothing coming in the hip or back so is that definitely the femoral nerve I need to do this exercise for?

Just did this lying on the bed on my side. Oh, the stretch it was in the front of my leg. Afterwards, there was a decrease in numbness, and now the back of my calf that oftrn gets a charlie horse in the midlke if the nught is " twitching" (extended) it is like it is getting some relief. And I and I am beginning to feel some more numbness go away. Wonderful. I knew the twitching signaled some relief

I have been wearing a tight belt for work for about a year with a firearm tucked in the front of my waist. Now I'm experiencing lower back pain and burning sensation in the front of my thigh. I'm hoping this exercise helps
@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab
I've seen quite a few law enforcement officers with the same work attire. You may want to check out my videos on something called Meralgia Paresthetica, since what you're describing could definitely be causing Meralgia Paresthetica. Femoral nerve flossing is a good thing to try too though if it may be an upper lumbar problem with femoral nerve radiculopathy. Best of luck in your recovery!

Hi I have started to watch you videos with great interest as back in January this year I had a compression fracture after a fall at work it is healing but I do have lower back pain and cannot stand for long periods. It is improving slowly but the pain in my front thigh has not improved and after reading the internet I do believe that I have Meralgia Paresthetica too so I'm in quite a lot of pain can you please recommend the exercises that I could do safely to relieve this pain in my thigh and to help my compression fracture pain from my spine. Thank you so much.

I hope this flossing exercise helps! Femoral nerve issues, if that's what you're struggling with, can be brutal. Nerve flossing can be really effective at releasing the nerve. Best of luck!

Is this a good exercise for the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve or Meralgia Paresthetica?
@JasonWilliamsDC-Chiro-Rehab

It will likely tension that nerve as well, although it's not a direct branch off of the femoral nerve.

I have improved doing many of the exercises but find that I can walk only about 100 yards without the pain, discomfort and numbing combing back. Interestingly enough I can push grocery kart with my hands only resting on the handle with no pain at all. How long does this usually take to completely resolve?

When I hear my patients tell me that it's comfortable to lean forward I always consider that what's affecting them could have to do with spinal stenosis and will dig a little further, this sometimes includes taking an XR. I always recommend seeing a chiropractor or appropriate provider get a comprehensive exam. It's really too difficult to estimate timelines based on this little information, but a practitioner may be able to give you a better idea. Best of luck in your recovery and thanks for watching our videos!

Any better? I have that and am seeing a new pain specialist. I had a nerve block for the ilioinguinal nerve on February 1st. This now chronic pain has been overall debilitating for me and I had to quit work. I have to do a lot of squatting and such to take care of 2 cats that require meds. One I have to follow around on my hands and knees in order for her to eat enough food to give insulin. She's newly diagnosed and was a grazer, but with insulin, they have to eat quite a bit of food to give. Plus, am cleaning litter boxes throughout the day. Anyway, driving is an issue, sitting without elevation, and walking when I extend the leg back. I have pain right around where the inguinal lymph nodes are. Also, the side where the hip is, across the groin, and down the front of the thigh. Exactly where she shows the pain route in the video. Was in Physical Therapy for pelvis, groin, and hip flexors, but will have to renew. I've had a lot of imaging and it's normal. No hernia. Left side only. I am left-handed. Additionally, in some areas, it's allodynia. I am on Gabapentin 900 mgs (300, 300, 300) and hate the side effects. Plus, I don't find it effective. And I also have a Lidocaine, Prilocaine and Gabapentin topical cream that does help. I haven't been diagnosed officially yet except nerve entrapment/compression and maybe central sensitization. I am thin, but used to wear tight clothing, had a commute for driving, was in private home healthcare and assisted clients with walking, dressing, getting them in and out of bed, etc. Plus, I had a pet sitting business and I worked on Sundays in the Church Nursery. All physical. I don't know. My right is fine. 🤷

I had tkr 2 months ago. I ended up getting severe femoral nerve neuropathy. My Orthopaedic surgeon said it would be 1 year to recover. Is there anything I can do? I do have an appointment next week with a neurologist. But anything you can advise would be great. I have not been able to lift my leg since my tkr. Thank you Lori

Lori, I'm so sorry to hear that you're suffering with femoral nerve neuropathy after surgery. That's certainly not an outcome you expected I'm sure. I treat that condition in my office and many times a sports and rehab chiropractor can help with manual therapy and exercises. I'm hopeful your neurologist is correct and it will go away. I can't give you any specific information on your case since you're not a patient but I do always recommend folks see a great chiropractor who will spend some time and create a plan to get over whatever they're suffering with. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery.

That's really not enough information to make a determination. I always recommend seeing a rehab-focused chiro if it's significantly limiting. A professional can figure out what's going on and how to get over it as quickly as possible.

As long as it doesn't significantly increase radicular symptoms 3 points on a 0-10 pain scale I typically recommend my patients perform it. Rehab involves a struggle sometimes but is worth it.
