General question.. I’m not familiar with the mustang basses.. what’s the basic differences between a Fender Mustang and a Fender Precision Bass? Just curious..
@Pontiac Soviro Thanks much.. so it’s 30” vs a 34”.. I’m partial to 34” myself.. but Dave seemed to like the way it played, so was curious about the differences.
I still have my made in the USA 1973 sunburst Mustang. I was eleven when my parents bought it for me. I used it for lessons, competitions and even gigged with it through a Fender Princeton and Hiwatt Custom 50. Very good times.
In person, a Sienna Sunburst anything has the very best wood grain, so if you've not seen that one, with black guard(black, white, black 3-ply believe it or not!) I'd try to find it for a Fender example of the PRS like "dipped in glass perfect" look.
This bass. Its actually very good if its not defective somehow, as you might imagine. Its quick, its just as deep sounding in most regards, but can get much more aggressive and punchy in a mix than the bigger models.
I had a robin's-egg-blue Mustang bass for a couple of years when i was in my '20's. Wish I"d kept it. I traded it for a Grundig TK 46 Reel-to-reel tape deck, and almost wore that out.It's still working 40 years later, so I guess I can't complain.
When I saw this bass it reminded me of my Musicmaster. Most people I have met have no idea what I am talking about with that bass. They were great little basses.
@@bavariabearfan music master has a middle pickup similar to a Jazz Bass. Its the alternative, along with the differentially placed Bronco pickup setup, that belong as the 3 known versions of the bass. Was there ever a Duo Sonic Bass?
I sometimes watch other guitar repair videos but many of them don't seem to know what they're doing. Your videos are the only ones that make sense in that you approach things in a logical manner. I think the problem is that these days everybody thinks they can be a guitar repair person... Nope!
I love these MIM Mustang PJ basses, just got mine about a month ago and its so much fun to play, from a guitar player's perspective (I only play bass when i record)!
Dave, thanks for this video and all of the rest. Would you mind one day going over the most common tools you use and from where to purchase them? It would be nice to know where to start and how to avoid the evil empire. Thanks again for all you do.
when you get a bass with strings like a bridge over the river kwaii to be in a state to play bridge over troubled water its a good weekend. I really like that colour too actually pretty nice looking bass.
There are four types of Fender bridge height screws: #4-40 x (length fractional inch) older six saddle #4-48 x (length fractional inch) some six saddle after 2008 #6-32 x (length fractional inch) Tele three saddle, basses M3x0.5 x (length mm) offshore six saddle Every one except the #6 are visually similar and close in diameter, the #6 being slightly thicker with a coarser thread. None are interchangeable and will mess up your saddle if essayed. Cool thing about the Tele’s #6-32 is that one turn of the screw at the saddle changes string height at the twelfth fret by 1/64th “. (1” divided by 32 threads per inch = 0.03125” per rotation). The M3 x 0.5 and later use #4-48 are very close to each other at one and one half turns for that 1/64th” at the twelfth and the venerable #4-40 is right between the others at one and a quarter turns to change string height 1/64” at the twelfth. I have a Fender Mustang p.j. I love it cool little bass ,I was told the switch can be a problem so far not for me. Flats I was told work good for it, I think I will give them a try.😎
I’ll tell you, I accidentally bought a guitar with the pau ferro fretboard a week before they were announced not knowing it wasn’t rosewood. I hated it, I thought it was a really crappy piece of rosewood. Then I found out it was pau ferro, and that explained everything, but a bunch of youtubers crucified me for saying I could tell the difference. ‘Cause they saw a video once, where Danish Pete said he couldn’t tell the difference, so now my opinion is invalid. Now I find it extremely satisfying whenever someone confirms my experience with pau ferro. At any rate, I had the same problem with it soaking up any kind of mineral oil or conditioner, and always looking dry.
Saw a video where Danish Pete talks about an oil he applied to make his PF neck look more like rosewood - so I guess he could tell the difference after all.
God I love that Capri Orange color that Fender has. It's my second favorite factory color. #1 goes to that deep purple P-Bass with a white pickguard. That one is my fantasy bass. You've had one on the show before. Maybe one day, I'll have one.
My first bass was a Sunn Mustang, which is a different beast. It is a full scale Precision bass, assembled in India from genuine Fender parts in the Sunn factory, which Fender (or rather FMIC) bought in the 1970s. Yours is a short scale bass; the first Sunn Mustang bass had only one pickup, the P-type. Is yours a later model with the J pickup as standard, or has it been modifier?
I generally don't like a PJ setup at all. It has an odd nasally tone that sounds just somehow off to my ears. For some reason a PJ Mustang sounds fine though. Must be the short scale. Some Ibanez PJs sounds good to me as well. Every other traditional PJ outside of that just turns me off.
I'm guessing that's a late model Mustang (MIM?) with this P/J setup. Wondering if the two knobs are volume & tone or two volumes. Because it has a selector switch I'm guessing the former rather than the latter.
Hi, Dave & thanks for your vids. I have one of these Mex PJ basses. I like the lil' thang but the switch & pots are garbage and aggravating AF. I will be replacing the pups with Seymore Duncan 1/4 pounders. I want to replace the switch & pots as I do that but can't find what I need. What is your recommendation? I will need them shipped to Panama so if possible will be buying everything from Amazon. I thank you in advance for any help you may provide.
Hi Dave - on a short scale I’ve found the e string to be not as tight as the others (a little loose and rattley) I’ve found this on both a mustang and a music master in the past Any ideas what I should do to remedy this? Cheers
The toggle switch is garbage, same one they use on those gretsch junior jets coming out of china...I have 3 mustang pj's and replaced the bridge pickup and toggle switch on all of them, now they're killer
