Hi Lance. I really appreciate your videos. They are very informative and you are just fun to watch! I've been a machinist for 25+ years and we work mostly in inches. We do on a regular occasion work with metric. If you can remember the number 25.4, you can convert easily from metric to inches and inches to metric. For example, 10mm/25.4=.3937 Inches, or .875 inches*25.4=22.225 mm. Take care and keep the great videos coming!

Hi lance. I have a question regarding the half shaft in a mf 35 3 cylinder. I have a few photos to send to explain. Do you have an email address I could ask you on?

Why were those adjustments important on the axle at the end?
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 4 года назад
Stops edn float which stops the oil seals from wearing and the bearing runs on a full compliment of bearing rollers.

Have you covered renewing the lower lift arm pins on a ted20. On my tractor there is a casting around the pin with a separate nut holding it on do I need to remove this. Thanks nick.

G Day Nick, No I have only done the later type. Should not be far away a video on that though.

hi Lance,thank you for your reply,forgot to say,i have replaced both diff bearings and seals and bearings on shafts,shoul i put anominal ammount of shimms either side to start the procedure,was a bit confused when you said just one side ?
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 3 года назад
Yes you do shims on both sides to start and when you are finished try and even the number out per side if possible.
@frederickpotter555
@frederickpotter555 Месяц назад
I’m confused as to why you install a gasket each side of the brake back plate. The parts books for both the TO35 and FE35 specifies only one gasket between the axle retainer assembly and the axle housing for the 6 hole housings. It doesn’t indicate which side of the plate it’s to be installed but one can deduct that it goes on the housing side as the shims are shown beside it. Why do you use two?
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed Месяц назад
On the early tractors (TE20) there is oil in there as they don't have the inner seal so I fit 2 gaskets. On later ones they are not really needed as it is just a grease compartment. I probably only needed the one but old habbits stick with you at times. It all adds up to a shim pack in the end.
@frederickpotter555
@frederickpotter555 Месяц назад
@@BundyBearsShed That makes sense now. Thank you for your reply. By the way, it’s an excellent video.

One question lance . What do you do if you haven't got a measuring bit of equipment?
@Andy-lh9pf
@Andy-lh9pf 21 день назад
How do you know how many shims you need each side
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 21 день назад
Try and keep them even. You remove shims until when you turn one wheel forward the other goes forward as well. This is just too tight. you add shims until when you turn one wheel forwards the other side goes backwards and there is no real noticeable axle side movement.

Hi Lance, Great videos. I have set my bearing to the tightest setting but when the wheels are on you can feel side movement from the bearings, is that something you have come across?
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 2 года назад
Yes you can often feel a little bit as the wheel has quite a bit of leverage.

G'day mate you have the same problem as me bending down, like putting that axel gasket on, one thing though I couldn't understand at first why you were shimming the axel. I can only figure out that the axels move in and out on rotation is this to take up any load that the tractor pulls? Bloody interesting how they figured this out and I really have enjoyed these sets of videos in the restoration of the old girl good one Lance John
@darrendean21

I'm guessing to pre-load the bearings, or if you like end float?

sorry Lance forgot to ask ime restoring a1960 mf 35 ,the hubs have twelve holes , do thay have gaskets either side of the brake plate,as non came off and i cant seem to get any only the six hole gaskets,cheers simon graves

I only fit them on the outside of the brake plate not on the shim side.

@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 4 года назад
Yes it is the same but the axle end float is the same on both sides as the axles touch in the middle so try and have even shims side to side.

hi lance writing to you from south wales uk, watched you set up the halfshaft bearings with shims clock gauge etc ,i may be a bit dim .but do you carry out the same procedure on both sides of the tractor ,love your vids,simon graves

G Day Michele, It is hard to say with out seeing but I would try and make sure the shoes are centralised so the full surface area rubs on the drum. I would also remove any glazing from the drum with some emery tape.

I've watched your last few videos with the rear end. My friend has an old Fergie, he had just bought it and as soon as he got it onto his property he hear a loud clunk and the rear wheels quit turning. They pulled it the rest of the way and it sat for a year. I'm going to attempt to diagnose the issue. I gather that probable causes could be a snapped connector between the trans and the rear end, a snapped axle, or broken pinion gear. I'm going to pull the inspection cover on the hydraulic pump section and see if can view the coupler. Next I plan on pulling the PTO shaft and using a scope to inspect inside the rear end. If i can't see anything then I'll pull the left hand wheel and axle as you said both dont need to be pulled in order to remove the differential. Would you agree on these steps? Cheers and keep up the good work with the videos!
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 5 лет назад
G day Karl, yes the shear tube is the first place to look for sure. If it is sheared lift the hydraulic cover and replace it. They are not known for breaking axles but you never know for sure.
