I think you guys might’ve missed something regarding Lana reading Chloe’s letter. It wasn’t meant to be her reacting to the fact that Chloe had these feelings for Clark; it was an affirmation of Lana’s own feelings for Clark in spite of the most recent setback they had in “Rush”, thus why the voiceover was in her voice and not Chloe’s.
Yeup. There were multiple layers to this. Those words kind of, maybe not exactly in the same way as Chloe, applied to her as well, also having been a friend of Clark "masquerading as the girl of your dreams"
The vulnerability in this episode from all around, Clark physically, Chloe emotionally. This episode, specifically that scene really shows Allison Macks ability to emotionally connect with her character.
This was the first episode of Smallville I ever saw! My dad was flipping around, and stopped just before Martha falls and realized it was something to do with Superman. We kept watching after that, taping episodes on VHS for the rest of the series.
AWESOME podcast, love Fever. Thank you so much for answering my question, I sure did not expect that Tom was not even there for the sleeping couch scene! Such seamless editing then because I was convinced Clark was there the whole time. It makes sense though, so Allison could pour her heart into the scene on her own. Happy birthday Ryan.....hope you had a SUPER day😀😀🍰🍰🥧🥧🎂🎂🎂🎂 Next.....🌹etta 😀😀
Just recently got my girlfriend to watch Smallville for the first time, and she instantly loved it. And now we found out you guys started this series! Wholesome!
I love these recaps really just brings back my childhood memories when you guys recap and go over every episode in remember the things that you do remember once you review each episode. I love Michael's reference to Eeyore from Winnie-the-Pooh makes me laugh and I enjoy seeing when Michael and Tom laugh at each other's jokes. Because I've seen the behind-the-scenes on Smallville when you guys coming over cracking it up on set you can see the real friendship that you guys have kept over the years it's a blessing. Keep up the good work and always hold on to Smallville 😉🙂
Tom, I will say that it makes sense for Chloe to write it. As a writer, I find that when I speak I get tongue-tied and say dumb things frequently. But when I write, all my thoughts are focused in one spot. So someone like Chloe would probably write multiple versions of what they wanted to say before confronting a serious situation. Not a big thing, just something that I weirdly understood as the writers knowing the character. As opposed to the writers needing to show Chloe’s intensity or a way for Lana to find out.
That letter Chloe wrote comes back in (I think) season 9. What trips me out is that Chloe obviously threw it away, but when the letter reappears in much later seasons it is in perfect condition. Soooooooo…..
To be fair, Johnathan Kent served in the army. He actually would know how to infiltrate the place, and remain unseen. Think about when Johnathan saved that guy from the crash caused by the deadly plant. He pulled the guy out, hefted him up and ran off with him over his shoulder with no hesitation. Almost like he'd done that before.
Just because one served in the Army doesn't mean they know how to infiltrate a building. I remember playing Halo 2 with a fellow soldier who didn't know what flanking is and we had been in the Army for 3 years by this point.
I would have given this a slightly higher rating just because as a fan I love the story line that follows about Clark’s blood 🩸 all the way into season 3 it helps create drama and more storylines throughout the show which I loved. Anyone else agree?
First of all happy birthday Tom🎉🎉🎉🎉!!!loves this episode! Loved every single scene! It’s so cinematic! I remember that I cried all of my drops when Martha said to Jonathan she was pregnant! And what about Chloe’s letter!?!? She seemed so authentic, she is a good actress!❤ This is my fav part of wednesday!❤
One thing I don’t understand is didn’t the ship render the kryptonite in the cellar inert when Clark was tied up with kryptonite necklace. Wouldn’t that have killed any threats to Clark within the cellar?
I thought that the necklace had scattered kryptonite dust around the cellar back in the day. It made it all make sense, I vividly remember that. For some reason my brain remembers seeing the dust get scattered. Did it not show that? When the guy on the hotline said it, it jogged my memory. You gotta ask Al and Miles please. Now I'm curious. Thanks for doing this podcast fellas! Much love. 😁
On the spores: It could just be as simple as the spores were dormant in the ground deep enough to not be a problem until Martha disturbed them by digging down there.
This is a strong episode, I think. It moves the plot along by giving excellent intrigue to the spaceship and its mysterious abilities, while being emotional and intense in and of itself when first Martha, and then Clark, contract an illness, in addition to the impending investigation of the storm cellar and the need to hide the spaceship, along with the complications that come with Clark's super-strong skin and DNA when dealing with medical staff. Pete is utilised strongly here which is nice, as he is required to help the Kent family in a manner where he's the only one who can do it - Some great time to shine for him as Clark's confidante, which feels a bit too rare ultimately. I agree that Clark and Pete pushing the car onto the road was unrealistic. The kryptonite dust is very confusing - It's a big shame it wasn't mentioned but, the reason it's there is due to the spaceship burying it after getting rid of it inside Lana's necklace, when Clark was helpless to it after Tina Greer's ambush in "Visage". This is actually never established, but I'm completely sure it's true - *MILD SPOILER ALERT FOR THE SEASON FINALE, "EXODUS"* - In this episode, we discover that, like Clark, the ship is vulnerable to kryptonite, and when it gets rid of it, it's protecting itself, not Clark. I think this episode may have been aiming for subtle storytelling, but it seems like a bizarre (and very frustrating) oversight more than anything else. In my experience, things should always be made clear to the viewer, as I've seen many a time, things go over people's heads.
As for the Kryptonite it was created when the planet exploded. It is basically radiation contained within a rock. The "ite" in the kryptonite is because when the fragments fell to earth it was considered to be a meteorite which is what scientist and people call rocks that fall to Earth from space, however Clark and those in know are aware of where the rock a.k.a as a meteorite comes from and so they call it by its true name the planet it originated from (meaning created when the planet exploded) plus "ite" since the fragments are now meteorites and when combined the name it forms is the word Kryptonite.
To my knowledge, the yellow sun is the reason Kryptonite affects Clark. The sun is why Clark has powers on Earth in the first place. Kryptonite came to Earth with Clark when the planet exploded as just fragments of ground but under the yellow sun it's effects change. Green Kryptonite is like poison and can kill him, Red K makes him not care about consequences, Blue, Gold, Silver, Black etc. all have different properties under Earth's sun
I thought Michael’s dog was my dog barking! Same exact pitch and sound. I kept going out and calming my dog down. Wondered why it was so quiet. Weird 😆
I am legit shocked that the Chloe reading the note of her feelings didn't win best scene and was kinda shit on. I am a huge fan of the show and I think that is arguably one of the top 10 smallville scenes ever!?!?
I'm not shocked. These guys aren't Henry Cavill. They don't watch scifi, they aren't fans of DC shows/movies, they've been crapping on Smallville, and they haven't watched it until now. Rosenbaum wouldn't even deign to read the script except his own lines. Tom is constantly surprised by what he watches and Ryan said on an earlier podcast that he wouldn't watch Smallville except for this podcast. So yeah, they'll shit on anything lol. At least they talk about it. Most cast members never want to revisit something..........until they can't get hired for anything.
The best part of waking up is with your Talk Ville cup. It's Welling Wednesday - Happy birthday Tom. Chloe pouring her heart out just for Clark to break it was so sad. The roller coaster of emotions in this episode were intense. Can't wait for Rosetta next week!
Even if it's not really big episode for Chloe, Fever is a reminder how gifted actress Allison is. She always delivered her lines so naturally. And that iconic line " i'm the girl of your dreams masquerading as your best friend"❤ . She was madly in love. Love Fever. Next one "Rosetta". Can't wait!!! Happy birthday Tom🥳🥳🥳
@@nachos4children I'm glad it isn't my decision whether to forgive her or not. The woman has a life to lead after this but I couldn't forgive or think she deserves another chance to work in the industry or sell books on her experience, if I had been scarred up like that. 😟
My favorite part of this episode was Allison Mack’s monologue to Clark. I was completely pulled into the scene and it felt totally real and natural. Also, the ending scene where the spaceship cured Martha and she came back to life. The pacing and the suspense was unbelievably awesome!
normal chloe would have been trying to find a cure for whatever Clark had. Her opening up her heart bedside was really un-chloe but it was really sweet.
@@TalkVillePodcast Haha good call. Maybe you all should have done the podcast 10 years ago while memories were fresh. As far as the "I'm the girl of your dreams" scene, great acting, sure, but how mortifying; I would never tell a guy "I'm the girl of your dreams"(!) even if he had made it clear he liked me as more than a friend-- let alone if he had made it clear he didn't! I literally laughed out loud when he said "Lana?" as Chloe had just told him [she thought] she was the girl of his dreams! 😆
@@TalkVillePodcast Props (not that kind!) to Wellz for bringing up whether the baby was healed along with Martha -- I was thinking the baby would have suffered brain damage from the loss of oxygen while Martha was dead/dying, so I am hoping the ship healed the baby too! My baby was deprived of oxygen (during his birth); he was born lifeless and then revived. As a result of oxygen deprivation, he has cerebral palsy, can't walk or talk (he's 5yo now), he's epileptic, legally blind, and tube-fed. So, yeah, definitely had concerns for that little fictional baby! 😆 But, seriously, I appreciated The Wellzo thinking about that.
I always had my own theory that the only reason the kryptonite-mutated spores existed then and not earlier was because of what happened 5 episodes earlier in Visage, who ironically was directed by the same guy, William Gereghty. When the ship activated its self-defense measures to neutralize the kryptonite necklace on Clark's neck, the radiation dispersed from the necklace got absorbed by the fungal spores in the dirt of the cellar, which caused them to mutate.
That actually makes sense never thought of it like that. I always though it was because Martha dig deeper than surface which released them and thought well they must never dig in the cellar till now
I liked this episode... Pretty underrated... When Clark brought the supplies for the party to the Talon and told Pete, Lana and Chloe that his mom was in the hospital, they were all asking questions... Chloe asked him: "Well, what are the symptoms" and Clark hit her with the: "What is this, an interview?"... I lightweight smirked because it's rare that Clark snaps when he's not on Red K and it was understandable... Also, we get to see Lana and Chloe realize how much Clark means to both of them and that can hit home... When you know someone that's consistent, strong and always that rock, it hits different when something happens to them and you realize "maybe, I have taken them for granted"... Obviously, Chloe reading her letter to Clark always gets me and my man said "Lana"... That kinda broke my heart, however, I understood that... Jonathan Kent definitely was the hero in this episode and it was cool to see him kinda go into "James Bond" mode to save his family... Pete, again, proves to be that reliable "partner-in-crime" which was cool to see... All in all, I give this episode 🌹🌹(2 roses)... #LoveThePodcastAsUsualFellas #TalkvilleWednesdays #TheNextEpisodeWillBeASpecialOne
John Schneider and Annette O'Toole are 2 of the most underrated actors of all time. I wasn't sure if Schneider had the range to play a father-type role, but now I couldn't imagine that show with anyone else portraying Johnathan Kent. Love the show, boys! I'm super excited that it's growing! 🔋🔋
What I love about you guys is how you talk about Allison as an actor and dont involve her criminal activity. You acknowledge her from the time that the show aired. I respect that a lot
@@Genisischarm Haha right? Like good lord guys even if you hadn't read all about it before, you would've caught up by now. I'm not a fan of REFUSING to talk about something like that if it comes up, but it's genuinely almost never relevant to anything in the show, yet we always get these comments "well I can't hear Alison mentioned without bringing up the crazy stuff, even if it's to say how much I respect not bringing up the crazy stuff." This is how tabloids make money 😂😂
I love how Rosie said they didn't carry things over from episode to episode, and then the very next plot point he read out was one from a previous episode.
I have never taken that scene as Pete actually contributing to pushing the truck. Just doing what he can while Clark’s powers slightly come back enough to move it.
Happy belated birthday Ryan 🎉 Happy birthday Tom 🥳 best Clark Kent ever! I love this community and the insight from everyone about the characters and each episode.
In regards to Pete and Clark pushing the truck I felt that Clark had not lost all of his super strength yet and that he actually did most of the pushing with a little help from Pete.
Clark explains (to audience) when he tells his father he lost his powers temporarily. I don't think that was meant to be that the illness took away his powers. It just affected him shortly, like the blurred vision was just a few seconds. His healing ability is why he could still function off/on for a whole day or two when Martha loses consciousness within minutes.
Happy Birthday Tom. Taurus gang represent ♉️. Great episode btw. Chloe’s confession to sick Clark was excellently acted by Allison. Makes what happened with her irl upsetting seeing how talented of an actress she is. I’m giving this one two roses 🌹 🌹. Next episode is a special one
Chloe's letter is definitely my favourite scene of the episode. I remember since I started watching Smallville when I was youngish, I don't have very clear memories of my first time watching seasons 1-3, except for a few distinct scenes (the pilot, the tornado, Christopher Reeve, etc) and that letter scene was one of the few scenes that stood out to me so clearly. And on rewatches, I continued to love it. The "I'm the girl of your dreams masquerading as your best friend" line is so iconic and was so relatable as a teenager haha. I always liked how it came back again much later in the series when Clark finally gets to see the letter himself. Also Michael, Kryptonite is called that because it is radioactive pieces of Krypton. When Krypton exploded, chunks of the planet got sent to Earth with Clark and the reason it affects Krytonians is because it's radioactive pieces of their native planet. It didn't exist before the planet was destroyed. Can't wait for next week's episode! Rosetta is definitely one of the best in the series!
I enjoyed this episode. It’s very emotional seeing Jonathan scrambling to save his family. Hated that they dragged out the unrequited love thing with Chloe lol. She’s more likable in later seasons when she moves on.
Exactly she became way more likable when she was over it! Chloe still being hang up on Clark at this point was so unecessary they should have gave her another love interest in season 2.
The ships not protecting the family. Clark later determines the ship has been defending itself. And that's why he uses the Kryptonite Key when he decides to destroy it.
@RedK5 it's not taking the chance. Same with when Tina locked Clark in the cellar with Lana's locket, and it purified it. Clark even states the ship wasn't saving him, but protecting itself.
Yeah we are all thinking it right - “how do they not remember?!” Tom must remember how he destroyed the ship at the end of the season? They are really missing something in this podcast huh. 🙈
Allison is an incredible actress, lt's good to separate the two love the characters Chloe it's evident, after so many "nothings" from Clark, she happily realizes and moves on and finds Jimmy and Oliver❤
I think the ship recognized that Clark was sick from the Kryptonian dust and wanted to cure him of it. Clark and Jonathan apparently knew that the ship would do something, so they drove directly to the hospital where Martha was lying and put the key in the ship there to heal her at the same time. And the ship only wanted to heal Clark of the Krytonian dust and nothing else, so not everyone else in the hospital was miraculously healed either.
Yes, and it’s kind of referred to later when Jonathan gets sick and Clark asks for Jo Rel’s help and he’s like his path in your life is fulfilled, it would be of no consequence if he died now. Like they “ship” cares to make Clark into who they want him to be via the people they placed in his life, but once they are done it doesn’t care. And needless to say Martha’s work wasn’t done so it helped her.
Tom doesn’t know. The kryptonite dust came from the time the ship purified/clarified Lana’s Kryptonite necklace. There is no natural source of krytonite dust.
Honestly one of the best episodes in the series. The fact that Jonathan literally sought out for a miracle to save his family shows why the earlier seasons had a lot of heart build into it and that’s what smallville is about. Incredible acting from the cast especially Allison, she was very talented and never disappointed with her work.
Talkville is my favorite rewatch podcast out there haven't missed a single episode since it started! But could you consider doing some change in your format : less summary and more commentary and bts stories from y'all. It would be great if after reading the synopsis of the episodes you go right into your thoughts, opinions and bts stories about the episodes. We don't need the play by play, we already know what happened in these episodes. The recap takes a good portion of the time, not recapping the episodes on the pod would give y'all more time to talk about the bts, your stories and thoughts about the show which is what we look forward to hear every weeks.
Agreed. And a format that allows them to take their time. Sometimes it feels like they're rushing to get through the episode so they can do something else.
I think this was a cool episode. I really enjoy this podcast but guys, you might wanna cool it with the complaining about the writers 😅 sometimes it feels kinda awkward 😂 23:26 NO, IT'S NOT DUMB. It was actually pretty clever when the intention of the story was actually that batman stop seeing superman as some kinda threat and start seeing him as a person. A human ina certain way
Wow, surprisingly low-rated episode from the guys. This was one of my favorites of the season. I don't think there was a scene I didn't like. The CDC descending on the Kent Farm, Clark getting sick and his powers on the fritz, Chloe and Lana's love and concern for Clark, the intimate scenes between Jonathan and Martha, breaking into the CDC, Clark saving his dad, the high stakes of having to save both Clark and Martha. Mark Snow, while I'm not a huge fan of his work, just hit the ball out of the park with the scoring as well. I thought it is a very intense and cinematic episode.
Also, kryptonite is a natural mineral on Krypton. It doesn't effect them negatively unless it's exposed to sunlight from a yellow sun. Krypton had a red sun, that's why everyone on the planet didn't have fantastical powers like Clark does when he's on Earth. So, yes. Kryptonite should be named after the planet it originated on. Krypton.
I liked that it seems to be that Clark can get another ally with the doctor. At this point I loved how she is clear about not discussing anything about her special patients to absolutely anyone.
We will definitely talk about this later as Helen's knowledge of the blood comes up again, but yeah it was kind of a relief to see her sticking to her ethics here. I guess the worst assumption you could make is she was just stalling, but it really seemed like she made a firm decision to be the good doctor. Also loooved the tension of not finding out with the needle, but knowing she was going to anyway once she looked at the blood. Schneider really sold it telling her "you HAVE to look at that blood YOURSELF. You'll see why." Especially knowing that he'd rather not have her know at all but he was desperate and out of options.
Yeah, for a min there after she finds out how diff Clark is, I was kinda expecting the show to expand on that and include her more - like maybe she would offer theories to how to deal w new abilities and challenges...alas, nothing like THAT! And the blood ends up in the wrong hands, disastrous consequences in multiple eps, and now on my rewatch I feel like maybe she does betray some confidences to Lionel at some point since he will eventually know more about Clark than anyone else.
This is the one, this is the episode where i fell for Chloe. This is when she became the heart of the show outside of Clark and the Kents of course. Not sure why the ending got me like it did, but it did.
Love this podcast and y’all. So many great moments between Jonathan and Clark. John and Tom played it so well. To me the true hero of this episode was the ship and ship key. Without the ship key Martha and Clark would not have been healed. Keys played a big part in this episode. The ship key was key to healing those affected and Lex gave Helen the key to his house and heart. I felt so bad for Chole in this episode. After pouring her heart out to Clark he gets that smile on his face and says Lana. Pete had some good lines in this episode. The X Files alert line was awesome!! Love the fact that the ship was stored next to a beta max. Sam definitely needs to be on this podcast. I never heard of the band playing at the Talon. The pregnancy was a surprise. Clark as a big brother. Great acting by all. I wonder why Lex wanted Martha’s file.
19:00 - My thought was that Clark wanted it to be Lana saying all that to him. It was harsh for Chloe to go through it as she pours his heart out to him, but it shows Clark's heart for Lana in that moment and who he really wants.
Tom's metric of "I wouldn't show this to someone who has never seen smallville" is kind of weird. Like, I wouldn't show someone The Two Towers if they hadn't seen any of the other Lord of the Rings movies, but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie.
Happy birthday Ryan ❤ this episode so good as someone who is asthmatic any issue with lungs and breathing gets me hard emotionally and the baby reveal was so surprising back in the day 🌹🌹 kitchen slow motion scene was so good this episode had are family in tears poor Chloe 😢
