So this boss is the topic of some...debate. If you've been following FF14's high end raiding scene this tier, then you might have noticed quite a few groups getting walled hard at this fight, and it's got quite a few folks in shambles.
To be clear, this fight is ridiculously difficult, compounded by the fact that we were told by the devs that this fight wasn't tuned around the extra week we got (everyone was essentially led to believe this fight would have an easy dps check), and reality did not at all line up with expectations.
There are a number of theories as to why this is the case, but here's how I interpret it:
1. Class balance is bad this tier. Like, really really bad. The DRK GNB tank combo does almost 500 more dps than the PLD WAR combo. Considering the fight has an effective dps requirement of about 63.6k dps, that accounts for almost 1% of the boss' health. BLM pulls almost 700 more over its other casters at a similar level, and the additional res is dead utility on this boss. Like, it's a problem.
2. The numbers tuning on this fight is unbelievably tight, enough so that the dps differences between a meta and non-meta comp can absolutely be the difference between a clear and a wipe. Furthermore, the tuning is tight enough that crit variance can absolutely screw you without a meta comp to pad numbers.
3. This fight has two different mechanic orders, and one is way better for dps than the other. If you start the fight with gorgon first, your burst windows are in places that actually make sense, rather than in fire-1. That means that if you're barely clearing the fight in gorgon first, odds are good you could just get screwed by ultima first. It sucks
4. The first three fights this tier are unusually easy. They're mechanically fairly straightforward and their dps checks are nothing. They line up exactly with what the devs told us to expect, and many folks, myself included, figured this would continue to be the case going into p8s.
People wanted a harder tier after asphodelos, and they got it, and now it's straight up dunking on week 1 groups. I personally hate door bosses, I think it's unsatisfying to clear one since it gives no loot and you immediately have to do more boss. It would be one thing if a door boss was 4-6 minutes long, but this is a full length 8 minute fight, and I have to do it every lockout to prog phase 2. It's honestly frustrating to the point of being not fun.
There aren't really too many notable things here, it's a purely execution fight with very little strategy or quirks:
- During the gorgon phases, if the gorgons move counterclockwise, they will ALWAYS end on an intercardinal. If the gorgons move clockwise, they will ALWAYS end on cardinals.
- This fight has only two possible combinations, the second set of mechanics is determined by the first.
- If you're looking at fflogs to measure your dps and your dps requirement, the enrage timer on this fight is EXTREMELY misleading. The actual enrage timer is 7:47. Clear pulls indicate they end at 7:51 because jank. Basically the boss checks whether or not youve done enough damage at 7:47, and pads the fight by an extra 4 seconds if you beat it.
