I've been playing so long that I can control how much it shakes. I actually allow it to shake a bit from time to time. If I hold the instrument just a little bit more, it won't move much. I like the pulsating effect and allow it to move just enough that it doesn't affect my bowing. Turn your bow inward slightly. Turn your hand counter clockwise enough to give just enough pressure to keep the bow on the strings constantly. When you need for the violin to be still, grab the fiddle just a bit more than usual for that.

The C string is the most loose string of all. Less tension. It vibrates bigger than any other string on the viola. Perhaps the bridge needs to be higher. A new higher bridge might be necessary. If it's the tail piece, check that the fine tuners are not loose.

Where do you live? We can look at it at Fiddlershop. Perhaps a longer sound-post would darken the sound. Maybe Ebony fittings and a harder bridge such as a 3 tree Despiau.

Yes we are. Chances are that your violin is of a bright nature. But there is a chance you could make it better with a longer sound-post and some more dense fittings and bridge. Do you have Ebony, Boxwood or Rosewood fittings?

It wouldn't really help me except that I would probably agree with you about it's brightness. If you have a luthier close by you should visit them and ask about the sound-post and bridge. Of course you could ship it to us but work like that is not that cheap. The bridge itself cost $30 and the work for the new bridge $50. Of course we do cheap bridges and quick installs (student setups) to save customers money but you need something extra to get the maximum quality sound. A sound post would cost you about $50 installed but that is highest quality post perfectly fitting. A lot of experimenting is involved in finding the best length and position. Obviously the investment messes up your "GOOD" deal in the end. Good luck with getting a darker sound from your instrument.

The problem is that I am alone in this room and if I move after focusing, everything will be out of focus. Thanks for the suggestion though.

What kind of camera are you using? Do you have control over lens aperture settings? If you can close the aperture a bit(higher f/ number) you can have a fair bit of depth of field to the focus. That will allow you to move around in the shot a fair bit without having to turn on auto focus. Found this cool little calculator www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html see if you can make sense of it. Basic idea of it is that the more you close the aperture the more in focus area you get. Play around with it a bit.

Great idea. I never thought about that. There is probably even a "Scene" setting that would obviously have a smaller aperture opening. I'll check that out.

Not sure if we had changed back then but now we are using the Sennheiser MKH 418-S Universal M-S stereo shotgun microphone.

I studied violin with some of the greatest teachers and soloists including Dorothy Delay and Ida Haendel. I played professionally and in leadership positions in respectable professional orchestras for most of my life. If you want to learn you'll ask me questions instead of making stupid comments such as the one that you wrote. it's OK for your instrument to move as long as you don't allow it to affect your bowing and I could keep it still if and when I want to simply by not holding so softly. I use three different types of vibratos and mix them with different intensities depending on the type of music and effect that I'm trying to achieve.
