Field Test "County Line" Bar & Chain From Tractor Supply. Are They Worth Buying? A Useful Option?

Breaking down tops with a small saw. Need to "configure" a setup as I have a LOT to do. What better reason than that to test options? Not like they are going anywhere or I'm on the clock.....SO the beginning of that development process. Long bar vs. Short bar. High dollar vs. Cheap ....

Up here in Canada a 18 inch speedcut combo for 75 can $ and the chains are 25. I've found the speedcut chain and husky sp33g cut well also. It is sad that the speedcut and versacut line has shrunk to just the common movers. Though to get them in a Stihl mount.

I have been reasonably happy with the less expensive chains. So far, the bars haven’t been the best experience. Oh, by the way, I received a replacement 20” VersaCut today in exchange for my crooked one. This one looks good and flat 😅

For inexpensive bars, I've been happy with the Forester products.

It looks cold. It is cool here this morning. I just put the coffee on, 12 cups. It will be ready in less than ten minutes. My wife will not be up for an hour and I want a cup of Joe before then. A bar is a bar and a chain is a chain. I have mostly Stihl Oilimatic bars on most of my saws. I used to like 3/8 chains but I have become a believer in the .325 chain, since I have it on a lot of saws, now. My big saws still run 3/8” chains but my 021, 024, 025, MS 250, 026 and Ms 260 all run the same bar and chains - .325. The 260/026 have a different length chain than the others but it is still .325. The others are exactly identical - .325, .063, 68. My 18” Stihl bars actually measure 19.5”

If I recall the chains are all "tri link" chains. (Was mostly listening, not watching, not sure if you had a tight closeup or not) so 3 "rings" as a logo on the chain. Tri Link IS better now than they used to be. Still "cheap" chain but they are moving up slowly in quality. I think their new production drive links have oil features. Occasionally you hit a cutter tooth that is WAY overhardened while the rest are on the softer side. The bars are "meh" but in a pinch on a sunday better than no bar haha. I seem to remember a few siezed sprockets from my tenure there and people coming in a year after "that big ice storm" and no receipt hoping we would warranty it.

I bought a 20" County Line bar and chain at the end of last season for an 026 I got running and switched it all over to run 3/8's instead of running .325 like my MS251 does. I bought one of the fancier chains that had "titanium cutters" on it and it came in a tin instead of the normal plastic packaging. But I haven't gotten around to doing any cutting yet before winter came. It looks like it'll cut good and the gold teeth look cool but aside from that I won't know until spring comes. I tend to just stick with the Stihl RS chain on my MS251, I feel like I've cut stuff with it that it wasn't meant to cut running that chain. :)

speaking of new style semi chisel chain cutting nice. The Husqvarna x-cut .325 chain cuts almost as good as a chisel chain while staying sharp as long as a semi chisel.

People think cutting down a tree is the hard work but that is the easy part of it. Cleaning up the mess is the hard work because you have to cut it into firewood lengths and the carry it to your truck or trailer. It takes me about 15 minutes to cut down a big tree and an hour or two to clean up the mess I created.

Geeze, I must really not pay attention. I saw your 560 clutch and had to go out to the garage and check my 2260 (which is my favorite saw I think - small mount with stuffers). In my head it was outboard, but sure enough, it is inboard. I love the oregon versa bars - nice and light, and that speed cut chain works great too. But, if you are only putting a 20" on, the cheap laminate bars are fine too. A little heavier, but for a small bar, it doesn't matter much. The 24" small mount versa bars are super hard to find though.

I need to look thru your archives to see what you thought of Holtzforma chains. I just got a 20" .325 semi. And bar. They seem okay. Man, I have so much standing dead ash. A lot of it's snags. That, & crappy ass cottonwood. Thanks as always big kid 👍🏼

I have 16 and 18 inch speed cut bars, I like that they're very light and the chains pretty good but the 18 is flimsy so I dont like it. I bought the 16 inch speed cut bar/chain off amazon dirt cheap but the chain is nfg, it's super soft on one side and rock hard on the other, it was dull in 2 cuts. I had to buy a different chain so I didnt save much in the end, I think amazon is selling seconds. I have the newest holtzforma bar/chain on my 660, the chain has been surprisingly good so far I've ran 3 tanks through the saw and its still really sharp. I expected to sharpen it after a tank but it's still cutting very fast, I dont keep cutting with a dull chain.
