The scrappage scheme was a bad idea, too many old cars from the 1980s and 1990s went you scrapheap that had virtually nothing wrong with them. I'd choose the original Ford Ka over a new Hyundai i10 anyday.
@lazrussanschei5372
@lazrussanschei5372 5 лет назад
Old cars are actually better for the environment than new cars. Think of the resources new cars need to be manufactured. If you drive around with your car for 20 years it's A LOT more healthier than if you buy a new car every 5 years. Emissions are just a very small part to consider if you want to look out for those things.

Now majority of the cars in the scrappage scheme are worth more than the discount you could get. Also you'd be lucky to get a brand new car for less than 10k these days, let alone less than 5k back then

The new cars are safer. Some cars around 15k even have autonomous emergency braking…
@LukeMM95

@@marklasy6209How is autonomous emergency braking safer? I think if the driver needs the car to do the emergency braking for them, they probably shouldn't be driving.
@marklasy6209

@@LukeMM95 I get that, but sometimes situations occur rapidly, and the car getting a 0.2 second head start on braking and reduce damage done to others and the passenger in the car.
@LukeMM95
@LukeMM95 Год назад
@@marklasy6209 There are people who have been driving cars with no assistance for decades and they somehow manage to avoid such incidents. I'm aware that other factors can be at play but this idea that modern cars are safer because they take more control away from the driver, is total propaganda by the car companies to keep people buying new cars. I'm sure in another 20 years they'll just come up with a new excuse to scrap more combustion cars, forcing us to either adopt electric or find another means of travel.
@marklasy6209
@marklasy6209 Год назад
@@LukeMM95 I’m not saying combustion cars should be scrapped. But I’m saying any new cars being sold should have the best tech, or we are just filling out roads with garbage. I like petrol cars they are great fun and they should be sold new. Diesel for small cars personally though should be banned in new cars as there’s no point in them. I would rather have the safety tech for an extra £2k then not have it.

At first, I'm against the car scrappage scheme because old working cars would be gone to waste. I like to keep my car going even when it's 12 years old and still driveable. But lately I'm starting to change my attitude. In Australia, I see many people advertising their cheap cars without a roadworthy certificate and without registration. And worse still, they want their cars gone in an instant. I wish I can tell them that's impossible and it's stupid. If they're going to get a new car, they shall just trade in their clunker to have it scrapped. End of story. Thank you.
@cpufreak101

So you guys are having our equivalent of Cash for Clunkers. Just a warning, expect the used car prices to shoot up in price with many models becoming rare. Here stateside the 96-03 Ford Explorer, more specifically the V8 AWD Eddie Bauer edition, is a really rare find these days, since they were worthless in '09 when gas prices shot up. BRILLIANT. Scrap perfectly working cars ( in many cases ) that people DON'T OWE MONEY ON. Get them into buying a new car and get in debt. WoW!! That will jumpstart the economy. Getting people into debt. Typical keynsian non-sense. And how much "pollution" was created with all the scrapping process and the building a new car process? How can anyone fall for this shit?

@Joe Very true, but it's not about caring for environment or people being sensible. In such a world, new car output would slow down and repair parts would be produced for a longer time, at lower prices in larger quantities. Instead the car manufacturers prefer to keep selling new vehicles to rotate the economy faster. It is wasteful but the alternative would inhibit progression :/
@bmw803
@bmw803 Год назад
@@birtalanlorant5572 They would produce them, but if you produce a car every 10 years instead of 7 years, you're still avoiding unnecessary waste. Longer intervals of production saves resources but big business and wall street doesnt understand that terminology.

How is,it "environmentally friendly" to just crush old cars? Surely it's better to resell the parts? As we all know, any car that's been on the road for 10 years has paid its debt environmentally to society, so the longer we keep old cars on the road, the better it is.

I'm surprised there aren't companies that buy in used cars then rip out the engine and fuel tank and convert them to battery electric then sell on part ex, or simply just offer the conversion for a price. Then again people love to waste resources and buy brand new crap.
6 лет назад
Charlotte Clarke It's a great idea but I bet the amount of red tape they'd have to attempt to cut through would make it a prohibitively expensive exercise. That said there are a few companies here and there who specialise in electric conversions for old Triumphs, MGs and classic VWs etc. I think they're more for fun than as seriously proposed replacements for originally fossil fuel powered cars though. As you point out we live in wasteful, throwaway times :( Anyway, greetings from the UK!

It better not have been a 5.9 ISB! We've got a bus at work which had one that recently had a failiure due to what I believe was a broken timing chain, the problem is spares are uncommon unless the vehicle is still in production and scrap yards are not willing to sell on parts. It was quite a challenge for them to find a turbocharger for a 2006 7.3L Volvo and resulted in a strong and reliable vehicle being out of service for quite a while.

It was just a wasteful, terrible idea. Putting many people out of being able to afford a car, ones that worked just fine & would have been far better for the environment than all those newer things, certainly EV's nowdays. Not everyone could afford a new car, along with it being not that very environmentally friendly with all the materials needed to keep making new ones, keeping the older ones going is much better in the long run than having some new thing, and these days, better than some unessicary technology laden, expensive, samey (most of the time being a dullard crossover, or SUV). I wouldn't bother with some new fandangle thing, will stay with my cars which are 25 & 15 years old respectively. This is an older episode yes, but the scrappage scheme was a stupid, wasteful thing. The one there in the UK & the one that was in the US. Just silly, wasteful, utterly silly schemes they were. Only time a car should be scrapped is if it is beyond repair, and wouldn't be feasible & safe to put on the roads. With that, if they were safe enough to do so, should take them banger racing instead, and give them a good send-off.
