FightNGear shoots the Taurus 605 Protector Poly .357 Magnum. My review of the Protector Poly 605 and my thoughts on the overall quality and build of the gun. This may be as good as it gets for a low to mid priced snubbie. The Protector Poly 605 by Taurus is solid, good looking and good shooting. Follow my day from buying the Protector Poly to shooting it, then after the range, a quick review of the Taurus Protector Poly 605 .357 Magnum and my comments on the gun, the sights and the fit and finish.

Purchased one last weekend. It is a nice looking pistol with a very gripping, soft ribbed grip that Taurus revolvers are famous for. It will be my carry weapon and will not be a shiny paper weight like a lot of other people like to buy guns for. This is a gun made to carry, made to toss in the vehicle under the seat or glove box. Ruff, tough, and capable of shooting multiple ammo selections. Good job on the video sir. I have subscribed.

Good review it's nice to see a review which includes the firearm in action! Nothing drives me nuts more than reviews before the gun is even fired

Thanks for a great review! It is nice to hear a success story with this revolver. I believe I now have the confidence to purchase it and hope that I do not get one from the bad batch.

Thanks. I have quit making the Range Master. It was never a big seller and I didn't make hardly any money on it, but I still have mine and use it a lot.

Refreshing to see folks actually using the revolver in double action mode. Lot of guys out there pulling the trigger back so they can actually hit something. Nothing against single action, but if one actually buys it with the intention of carrying it for defensive purposes they really need to use not only double action frequently but also practice fast double taps at at least two targets. I happen to use 9 inch paper plates at 7 yards. That said, I bought this primarily as a snake gun but enjoy hitting paper every now and then with solid loads. I bought the .38 plus P version on this. Fit and finish was excellent and I even like the matte look. Being able to put three fingers on the grip is a definite plus. While very accurate at 7 yards fast double taps from a draw to hit a 9 inch pie plate at the same distance wan't exactly gratifying using the double action but at least they were hitting the target most of the time. It is a rather heavy pull at present. If it eases up with use ( no reason to thing it shouldn't ) I should do better. I might add, this is on me, not the weapon.

Agreed. There is a time for target shooting, but it is not during a self defense situation. Be safe my friend and thanks for watching.

I have had no issues at all with mine and have shot some hand numbing hot loads through it. I have read the same things on several sites and don't know whether I got lucky, or if there were a couple of bad batches that went out. I do know Taurus has great customer service and I would not be scared to buy one, but like you I am puzzled at the many negative reviews I have seen. Based on personal experience it is a great gun. I call them as I see them, and have no stake in any gun company..

There are different horses for different courses and different guns for different people. I never judge other people's favorite guns, but I do try to give an unbiased review that does not revolve around cost or the "coolness factor" of the gun. Thanks for watching my videos.

Kyle,who did one of my videos, carries this gun almost every day. Personally I find mine just a little big for EDC. My favorite is the 709 slim followed closely by one of my .380s, either a TCP or the Bodyguard. If I go up to a larger gun, I carry the M&P9C which I find to be a great midsize EDC. The M&P and the 605 are close in size, but the M&P is much higher capacity.

It is still holding up well and has had a lot of range time in the last month. I shoot mostly .38 Special out of it due to cost, b ut it had had a fair does of hot .357. I will say I shot some lawman 158JHP out of it and they stung the hand, but for the most part it is quite a nice shooting gun and easy to handle.

I only shoot .38 special +p in mine , its a little too light for the .357 mag in my opinion and also the cylinder is hard to open to reload at times , front fiber optic fell out but I shortened it and super glued it back in , fine now , and I've run about 600 rounds through it as well. I will be getting into reloading as I find it too easy to go through ammo with this gun , plus its the only one I can recover my brass from , going to get something different for .357 mag as that is really what I want to shoot. the trigger is on the heavy side , don't know why they were down playing it , but it is !

I am with you on the .357 mag ammo. It is a bit hard kicking in any small revolver and especially one with a polymer frame. Be safe my friend.

I have shot some very hot .357 and 38SP ammo out of that gun. For me I have went with the balance of Hornady Critical Defense ammo in all my EDC and home defense guns. I feel it has the best blend of stopping power while still remaining very controllable. Shoot safe and vote this year, we have a gun rights battle coming.

Great video and review. I wasn't really sure between the polymer 605 or the stainless 605. I think I'm 'aiming' more at the polymer version now. Basically for the sights and the weight, I haven't seen fiber optic sights for the stainless version. The weight is probably a little lighter than the steel versions, for all day carry that's a plus. Thanks.

I've been trying to find honest reviews about this gun. I will be picking one up from my local gun store in a couple of days. I read that there have been issues with screws working loose, especially after shooting hot mag loads. Have you experienced any issues? Thanks for the great video.
@FightNGear
@FightNGear 11 лет назад
I love the SP101 but so far I have not had any timing issues with my Poly and it has had a lot of full power ammo ran through it. The fit and finish is never as good on Poly guns as fine steel ones though, I agree.

I tried mine at the range recently with 50 rounds of regular. 38 special fmj and had problems with ejecting the empties from the first cylinder to the last. The empties would not come close to ejecting and free falling, even when I pointed the barrel toward the ceiling and actuated the ejector rod for its full length of travel. Any ideas as to what if anything I should do other than send it back to Taurus. I bought it new in box and did dust it off and put a very light coat of Hoppes Gun Oil.

I do not have a mold for the PT145. I make mostly holsters for the smaller pistols and just do not get enough orders for the bigger guns to buy the molds for them. Sorry I was not able to help.
@vulpixgrant
@vulpixgrant 10 лет назад
IF you had to do it all over again would you go with the Poly gun or the regular steel 605? My first gun purchased ever was a Taurus 85 .38 Special Ultralight that I have close to 2,000 rounds through now, that gun has such a good feeling grip on it it's hard to stop shooting it once I start. Replacing a 617 7 shot .357 Taurus, to bulky to carry easily that's to that massive cylinder.
@t436
@t436 5 лет назад
605 if you plan on shooting .357 a lot. That's the route I went.
@FightNGear
@FightNGear 11 лет назад
With a light smack and the barrel pointing up mine pops out brass like strudel from a toaster. I never put oil in the cylinder and that could cause some gunk build-up I suppose. I would think after a few hundred rounds it would become smoother and brass would drop out easily. I really don't know and I guess if you think it is not right you should send it in. Mine has been one of the best guns I have owned. It seems these are guns people love or hate.

The field strip would not include trigger removal. That is a little more in depth and I suggest for safety and liability reasons you have a gunsmith do that. Especially if you ever plan to use the gun for self defense.

I realize this is an older review, 11 years old in fact. But it did, along with a few others, swing me. I might have overlooked the Taurus, Having a new S&W 642 as my EDC. I Had looked at a consigned Ruger LCR, just before ordering my Smith in Apr. 2024 (having CCW a Mod. 36) The consigner was "well 'in the stratosphere with his way too much asking price at near $790 even though it had a Lazer However, I poke my head in y friendly LGS once or twice a week and they happen to have a Taurus 605 Protector Poly .357 Magnum. Did I need it NO! but the price was very right. And even better I had found an old Surfboard while at the town recycle yard, dropping off some junk. I decided to bring the old long board home. It sat around until wife asked what I was going to do with. On a lark I stuck it on eBay, it sold the same day! So, with a windfall in hand, I snapped up my 605 🙂 It serves as a backup in my road, hazard bag 👌 I am VERY happy with my 642 as my CCW companion

@venomoussvt I am not sure what to say about his. I have had no trouble with my 709 slim, 738 TCP and now this Poly Protector. I do read lots of knocks on Taurus and am sure many are well founded. This has not been my experience, but maybe I am due. I shoot an incredible amount of rounds through numerous guns and have no financial stake in any gun company. I do not want you to base your purchase on my opinion alone. Good luck with whatever you buy and be safe.

The people knock Taurus are 2 types: 1) the ones who expect more than what the weapons was designed for, and 2) the people who don't clean and lube the weapon out if the box. ♠️🎩☯️🏁
@FightNGear
@FightNGear 2 года назад
@@ratagris21 That applies to more than just Taurus. I find a lot of folks buy a gun expecting it to do things it was never designed to do. As to maintenance, people don't maintain their cars, tools, homes or firearms like the generations before did. But these days, ownership isn't about practical use to survive like it was years ago.

Vulpixgrant...I can't figure out how to reply on that stupid google plus crap, so I hope you get this. Your question is complicated for me to answer because I have so many guns and buy them for a lot of reasons including just to review. If I were only buying one gun, I would likely opt for steel frame over poly. But, this gun has some advantages. It is lighter, softer feeling with hot loads and less likely to stain or discolor in the frame and barrel when I get it wet. One of my favorite uses for this gun is in my tackle bag. It gets wet often. If I had it to do again I would buy the poly, but If I were recommending a revolver for a guy who was not going to buy lots of guns, I would say go steel.

Wow 9 months, no I never got the response until I started looking into the .357 snubbies again and found your video... AGAIN lol. I've been into guns since mid 2007, and currently own more than I am willing to admit over the internet. But I still have a love for .357 revolvers. My 2 favorite right now are my GP-100's in blued steel 4" and 6" barrels. GORGEOUS guns. But I really miss the snub nose .357 I used to have. I have purchased a Ruger LCR .22 Magnum for my 66 year old Mom to use as a CCW, but then she backed out of the training and it's a truck gun now. That little stinkers trigger is crap, but even so it's a hoot to shoot. Never liked the grips though. I have never held one of these before, have my Model 85 Ultralight here with me looking it over and really trying hard to make a decision before I go and haggle at 'My' favorite gunshop ;) Thank you for the response, I should have just come back and checked the original video. Google's evil takeover of RU-vid seems to be working a little better now then back then.

The Fit and Finish on these leaves something to be desired. They all have sharp mold seams and casting slivers hanging on all over the place. If you shoot a ton of full house 357 out of them be prepared for the timing to start running out. Save up for a Ruger SP101
