Your chickens will be adding to your compost pile all year! We always look for soil on sale all year. If we find some, we buy a bunch. Thanks for sharing this fun idea for filling your beds on the cheap. Cheers!
I can't wait to get my new property move in ready! I'll be expanding the flock to 10 or 12 and getting a real composting system going instead of just my little tumbler. :)
Soil is soo expensive! Great job filling the bed on the cheap. We have a dairy/farm near by and they gave us a huge trailer load of compost for free. Such a huge blessing!
I like the new garden bed. I'm in the desert, so leaves are hard to come by. 😪 But I have chicken poop and sticks and twigs for filler and compost. I can't wait for spring!
Same! Spring feels right around the corner yet so far away!!! Twigs/sticks, chicken poop, those I have too. Can't wait to get on the new property and really be able to compost on a larger scale!
Soil sure adds up fast! Great tips on saving money, and I bet once all those branches and leaves break down, you’ll have the best soil in that bed! I hope your garlic does well for you! I’ve definitely planted mine very late in the past, and it’s always done well anyway!
I will when it comes back. It's gone dormant for the winter with the short day lengths. I didn't get any blooms this year but I found out after the fact that the first year it's very unlikely to flower because it's just getting established.
Yes! It won't get to do much this time cuz I will be moving the bed when i harveys the garlic and moving it to the new place! But I'll put all the soil/organic material as the base for a larger bed at the new place!
Yup! I like to use cardboard under it as a weed barrier to compost down but the box is still holding the other 2x6 bed I'll be building up at the new property!
That's awesome! A big portion of the area where I am building the new garden has been spread over with sand so I'm looking forward to doing raised beds over that!
Happy New Year Dani! Amen girl use Hugelkultur method. Saves so much money using other materials. We planted garlic for the first time this year…even though it was warmer earlier on this fall, I couldn’t tell if it sprouted or not because of the straw on top. Does it have to sprout before winter?
I don't think it really needs to sprout too much but it needs to get some root growth to make it through winter. I'm not sure the garlic I planted will make it or not. We shall see...
