I spent hours and hours farming the sphere grid for this fight, and this is how it went : Me : Wow, already 6-million hp gone, i might actually do it ! * boss destroys my pattern and casts auto-heal on himself* Me : ..... HEY YOJIMBO, WANT TO BE A MILLIONAIRE ?
Yeah, i figured that out after he had already recovered millions of HP, but the thing is that i was still in deep trouble, i was barely surviving the fight to begin with, and then he killed Auron, screwing my Double HP + 0 MP buffs. So.... er...yeah, Yojimbo.
just wanna say...I remembered this comment when it came to this fight... i was around an hour into the fight, had one hit left on the right hand and was getting ready for a 'mighty G' when it accidently attack the wrong target...the hand wiped a party member, other hand came back...then said 'f' it, rotated Yuna in...
@@RepentInReprise now you see, the problem with that is, Yu Yevon Kills the summoner(Countless members of the fayth in this case) and takes control of the Aeon as Sins new Core Which, again, in thos case, would.male.Sins next incarnation invincible
It was speculated for a while that Penance was Summoner Gandofs Final Aeon which is why it has a large scar in its torso and why it was dormant in the large chasm near the calm lands where he fought Sin. Though i think artbooks disproved this later saying it was a forbidden machina used by Bevelle during the War with Zanarkand
The top of the ship is comprised of the rarest form of alloy know to all. It goes by the name of Plot Tanium. Its an indestructible alloy that is surprisingly easy to work with and mold. While being unbreakable no matter how thin it is made!
@@alexanderdreyfus58 I know this is a 2 year old comment, but damn I'm surprised that probably no one understand the pun you just made. Pretty underrated.
What makes you think they did not already for a past sin ? That is the farplane's abyss he comes from (as shown in X-2). He does look like some kind of ultimate aeon. Only ultimate aeons seem to be that unique and powerful (and from which temple would you get Penance anyway ?). Pyreflies also prove he is a sort of biomechanical entities not entirely living and not entirely machine.
It may not look that impressive now but imagine doing this back in 2004 after buying the PAL version of the game off eBay and all the ins and outs and what and where to grind things werent publically available all over the Internet like it is now. Everything you knew was word of mouth from friends or from a GameFAQS text guide with the ASCII art. You were left to figure it out on your own for the most part. Hell back then I only knew about the celestial weapons because my cousin knew about it from one of his friends who knew about it because of a pen pal from Japan. Its trivial now but getting to this point back in the games primetime was legendary.
@@iris089 That's normal. That's how it was done back in the day minus the pen pal stuff. Games like this were impossible unless you knew a nerd who did it all.
@@60wwediva When I was a kid, the only way to know a Fatality move in Mortal Kombat 2 is to ask a friend from his friends OR to buy a game magazine. But this one took it to the next level to have a penpal from Japan.
37 minutes, of everyone doing the maximum potential for damage, using quick hit to make every single hit with reduced reaction times, constant haste for speed, auto potions healing with nothing by x-potions, and maximum (im)possible stats to not die in every single turn. Not saying this boss is impossible. But would need way to much time for any sane person to farm for materials/exp to do this fight legitimately. Great video though!
Literally the only thing you need in this battle is: Tidus, Wakka, Rikku all with fully powered Celestial Weapon. 255 str, 255 def, around 230 spd. 110 luk, armor: def 20%, auto haste, auto potion, auto protect. item: 99 x-potion, mix for hot spurs, eccentrick and ultra nullall. All can be farmed within a day.
This boss is actually super easy. Dark Magus Sisters is probably the hardest fight as it's at a perfect point where you arenn't that powerful yet. At this point you've done everything. This isn't even an efficient way of killing Penance, you can do it in half the time easily.
Christos Soteriou Hell no!! I beat Dark Magus Sister while fighting against all 3 of them. Penance is way harder! what sucks is his second form honestly. The First one is really easy... but the second form is a pain in the ass.
@@dildonicplague Ruby Weapon is an incredibly easy boss if you have W-Summon and three Mime materia (or W-Summon, a KOTR summon with "MP Absorb" linked, and two Mime materia). Start off with two dead party members, start off by reviving them, and then W-Summon Hades (which will inflict Stop) and then KOTR. He will be unable to cast Ultima and you can either Mime this continually or risk W-Summoning KOTR for a few turns before switching back to Hades/KOTR. As long as you can get into that rhythm, Ruby is simple. I had more issues With Emerald, personally.
Wow, literally nothing happens when you beat the greatest challenge in the game? Not even a “we did it” or something? Hilarious that it drops armor and spheres when you couldn’t possibly get any stronger.
Yeah that's why I quit and was glad I actually forgot to get Anima. I would have been pissed to beat that thing and nothing happens. No cut scene, no secret scene or Zanarkand spotlight for Tidus. Not something rare that be such a great addition, nothing. Whoever developed FFX and thought about this is a major cunt. It's such a tideous grind heavy game that sucks so.many hours out of your life it's a shit storm. It's not fun at all and are just for adults who love the strategy challenge.
It may look monotonous, but everyone that played the game when it came out, and spent the time to get this far, and met this boss, knows how much time and dedication it would take back then to make the fight this easy. It is just incredibly difficult, or at least very time consuming.
This is my favorite game of all time. I grinded the sphere grid and everything else to make the party wicked strong. However, this was on ps2. Now that the remastered has come out, I'm fighting the want to grind for these battles on the remastered. You're right,it takes SOOOO much time to get your party like this with great equipment, etc
@@daisuke4bleach The luck spheres and some other spheres, they take a lot of time .. those monsters are the arena must be dealt with in a specific way. Collecting the monsters take a lot of time. But it is fun when one has gotten far enough.
Your divine punishment for maxing out the sphere grid, getting the best gear, and dealing all of the damage is a fourty minute fight where nothing interesting happens. I sure hope that was the meta commentary the developers were going for. Because that sure is irony LOL. Of course, hella impressive. Such dedication and planning that goes into this fight.
@@rober4 lmao what, how is this not squaresoft music when the game came out when it was still called squaresoft and also is by a composer who has worked with the series for 20 years
Yeah this bastard requires a choreographed dance of, eliminate the arms then let one lone person do the attacks to the core. Then dispel the immolation. at 99,999 this bastard takes 120 hits minimum to take down. I did it myself but took almost 45 minutes. It's a long sit.
Hitting around 120 times is nothing when you fought Yiazmat from FFXII once :D Anyway, i really enjoyed the fight against Penance back then. Funny thing that HE was the main reason to buy my first PS2 lol
I just have to say with all the "What's the point?" and "Why would you waste your time for such a repetitive fight" and yadda yadda yadda... I'm not sure those kind of commenters will really understand the feeling of getting a true full completion of a game that seriously defined many of our childhoods (or even adulthoods for that matter.) This game has a very special place in many of our hearts. And knowing you've truly mastered it? THAT holds more satisfaction than any Platinum Trophy could possibly dare to try. (Although that Trophy is a HELL of a bragging right too... ;D) I have 4 words my friend... "Well done and congratulations."
@@nogunk147 That does make sense as a theory. Strange that there’s zero textual reference to it in the game. No one even comments like “What is this?” it just happens.
Well if you watch the cut scene when penance appears. He comes up from the chasm I'm speaking of. He's summoned and appears. Easy to speculate that he is most likely the final summoning of the summoner that caused that chasm
"Penance" = "payment for one's sins". You (your party) comited the ultimate act of hubris/sin: killing the (dark) Aeons (which would be something akin to killing Olympic Gods, in Greek mythology, for example), so Penance is supposed to be your "Ten Batsu" ("Divine Punishment" - written in his body) for it (the hubris of breaking the "natural order" of the cosmos: human beings killing/defeating divine creatures: inferior-order beings (humans) killing superior-order beings (the Aeons) ). Supposedly, Yevon, who is a demiurgic figure in FFX's Universe, is the one summoning it.
I don't care what anyone else says. This may have been a long repetitive fight and yeah you could've ended it one hit with zanmato but you put in the effort and earned that win. Congratulations and I hope you keep up the good work.
Exactly after spending awhile doing this and finally beating him it is so much more fulfilling than just zanmatoing him. I felt so overjoyed when he finally died lol mostly because all the other bosses weren't challenging.
I think ffx is one of the best game and for me it's definitely one of my all time favs. However i dont like the fact that when you get that high on stats, black magic is useless as well most of the abilities. It's only quick hit and some mixes and some auto-potions etc. Why not move magic further with spells like blizzaja or multi-blizzaja or combinations like ice barrage (aqua, birth by sleep).
They were probably too busy worrying about boring, tedious side quests and excessive grinding to worry about more interesting and elaborate skills and move sets haha
Took me 151 hours to platinum this game. However, I wouldn’t say it was a “hard” trophy, it just requires sooooooo much patience. I fully maxed out my characters before hunting down any of the dark aeons (aside from Valefor but he was a joke) and it was a breeze. Only died once to Anima, Bahamut, and Dark Yojimbo. Since it had to be done for the platinum anyway, I figured id get it out of the way first and boy am I glad I did. Defeating the dark aeons/Penance without fully maxing out the characters is pointless. You would be making the fights “harder” for no reason other than suffering hahaha
It might be possible to get it so fast... If it's not your first playthrough, if you just fill the rest of the empty nodes and not erase the +1/2 /3 ones to replace them with +4 and if you use Yojimbo for the superbosses then... naaah... 80 hours still feels too tight...
Even if the battle itself isn't that hard with the right setup, getting this far is a pretty monumental challenge in and of itself. For starters, you need the right armor, which would take quite some time to farm the materials for. Then there's the Celestial weapons, which are bound to take a while even if you don't bother to get all of them. Then you need to get your stats high enough to even stand a fighting chance, and while there is a way to level up incredibly fast, you need to farm more materials in order to do so, and may even need to farm extra spheres. Not to mention the Dark Aeons that need to be defeated as a prerequisite. So yeah, though you could argue that all of this isn't that hard, you still have to do pretty much everything else there is to do in the game before you can even attempt the fight. So I'd say it still ranks as one of the hardest trophies in the game to get, if not THE hardest
To defeat Penance without Zanmato is easy . No need of ribbon, bhpl is never needed. No summon is needed . Strategy for penance is easy but very specific formula... All three characters must have 255 strength 255 defense 255 agility with luck at least 100. Preferably wakka tidus and rikku, but Auron or Yuna is OK .All three must equip fully powered celestial weapon. All three must wear Shaman Armor with following: Auto haste Auto protect Auto potion (sell all potions except X Potions at least 90+ in stock) Defense +20% In beginning of battle have Rikku Mix ultra nul all (cheer x5). Hit and kill the arms one by one preferably with quick hit ability , then the main body when arms are gone, defeat the arm prior to it's turn. The arms must never get a turn. No character need to die in entire battle. When penance hit you obliteration all party auto heal with auto potion ability. When penance hit you with immolation in second form immediately dispel that character. Penance can be defeated with this method in around 40-45 minutes in PS2 You can set overdrive mode to Comrade if you use overdrive of wakka or anyone to hasten overdrives.
This fight was so good, its basically an orchestrated performance, one mistake and you are paying the price or just recovering for the rest of the battle!

Ok for those wondering about the lore of Penance I think the 2 likely answers to what it is are: . Either a culmination of souls of high summoners/guardians from a variety of different fights with sin at the calm lands that were never sent, forever roaming in the scar .High Summoner Godof’s final aeon, who was responsible for the scar in the calm lands 400 years prior to ffx I think the dark aeons are related as the cult of yu yevon realised the power of penance rivalled Sin/yu yevon, so the dark aeons were yu yevon’s method of fragmenting/containing that power Penance’s design however looks a lot like a machina, so there is a theory that al bhed were able to make a machina that was powered by the souls of the dead. But I mean yu yevon also used machina in the temple of bevelle so it could maybe be correlated to yu yevon too. Would explain why you can hear the yu yevon musical motif in the penance OST. Whatever the real answer is, Ffx don’t really do a good job on explaining this big floaty boi.
I'd say the final aeon theory holds up with how strong penance is, although yu yevon would have merged with godofs final aeon one would think is. And the cult theory considering the DAs have to be killed just have the fucker show up, minus yu yevon as yu yevon would be the amoeba you find him as in Godofs day. Add the fact a good few of the dark aeons are found near their temples like valefor for example. And maybe seymour knew of them as Dark Ifrit was found where home was and maybe he was used by the guado to ransack it otherwise its a bit random he's just there chilling and waiting. Also, there's precedent for final aeons to act independently as jecht and dark ifrit, bahamut and anima acted independently with no summoner. Makes you wish penance had more references in game. I had the theory the dark aeons were born from penance the same way ultima was from omega as the colour palettes kind of match up and penance was almost like a dark final aeon
I once read the official wikia about Penance. Penance isn't a a Dark Aeon or anything related to an Aeon. It's not an unsent either. The wikia explain that Penance is the ultimate machina created by Bevelle on its final attempt to stop Yuna and her guardians.
Honestly, I kind of felt cheated when I beat Penance, since it required so much time & effort to unlock the Celestial Weapons, capture all those fiends for the Monster Arena so you can grind out the necessary stats, and then hunt down and defeat the Dark Aeons...and yet the reward is minimal.
Dude by that point, what else is there to get? You are maxed out in literally everything and you just defeated the strongest creature in the game. What is the point of getting stronger if you can conquer everything? Tbh i wish there was like a “ignore magic defense” type of item to make lulu a lot more better with the magic stuff because by the late game, magics are incredibly useless. For me if there’d be an ultimate reward after beating penance, that would be it.
I don't know why some people insist that anything above 170 agility is completely useless. I saw someone else's video of this fight with his agility a little above 170, and he was forced to use overdrives to destroy the arms before they could get turns at the beginning of the fight. I want to be able to do that without overdrives, and according to this video, having 255 agility DOES make a difference.
Interesting thing is there are words "ten batsu" written on his body cast with Spira language which translates in to "Divine punishment" from Japanese.
That's why he/she/it is "Penance" (payment for one's sins). You (your party) commited the ultimate Hubris of killing the (dark) Aeons (which is what makes him appear in the first place), so Penance is supposed to be your "Ten Batsu" (Divine Punishment) for it (the ultimate sin of Hubris).
Man this boss took a lot out of me. The sheer amount of concentration to not F up your rotation was exhilarating. Took me like 4 or 5 tries within a span of 3 hours to beat him. Wish I recorded the entire match. I only was able to recover like 15 mins which is uploaded.
Funny thing is Penance isn't even the hardest battle in FF-X. Once you already know the pattern, it's easy. The hard part is leveling up and farming lmao
Gypruzz Caccamo exactly what I said. The original release of FFX didn't have penance or the dark Aeons. it took the international releases (which came half a year later, and not in the US) to add these guys in, and I think a few years after that when they released it again as 'ffx- greatest hits' that they had the US version (in terms of spelling and everything) to finally have the dark aeons and penance. If the OP didn't know these guys were available, he may have had the original US release.
For me personally. this was the hardest boss I've ever played (I beat Nenja Gaiden Black on master ninja difficulty) and I have never been able to beat this bastard. pain in the @$$
Yeah, the PAL version had this but not the NTSC version. Despite having the PAL version, I ended up stumbling upon penance online since I never managed to beat the Dark Aeons.
Just watched a list of FF Super Bosses that placed Penance at #1. I can't imagine the insane amount of grinding it would require to get your characters to a point where you even have a chance at defeating Penance... ...but the fact that the game even allows you grow your characters to such strength that it's possible to defeat this boss a with a relatively simple strategy kinda takes away from the boss' difficulty. And once you reach that point, the fight itself isn't particularly interesting. The Boss just repeats the same attack, and every time you're hit you auto-restores back to full strength and continue. I feel like Penance isn't a difficult super boss, it's just a matter if you've spent enough time maxing out your characters. It's easily the strongest enemy in the game, and definitely the final test of strength a player can face in FFX, but from a design perspective, Penance isn't a particularly interesting boss. I'm studying to become a game designer, and the FF games have been a huge source of inspiration for me, so that's why I'm analyzing this so in-depth. I feel a more interesting boss would have more variability and do more things the player would have to react to and manage. Of course that all depends on the game also not allowing the characters to grow in strength to the point where they're immune to all threats and can auto-recover from all harm. Kinda removes the challenge if you can heal back to full strength every time you get hit and permanently have all the best buffs active at all times. But I still respect the amount of time it must have taken to reach the point where you're able to reach this level of power.
Penance has 12,000,000 HP. Divide that by the damage cap, 99,999, and you get ~120. That's the number of max-damage hits you need to kill him. Divide that by 3, and you get ~40. That's the average number of hits each party member needs to dish out to destroy Penance. That wouldn't be so bad, except that you've got both his overpowered attacks and his arms that you have to keep under control, lest Penance cast Judgement Day.
Sin was never meant to be a superboss. If people souls can turn into sin then sin power and destruction depends on who is controlling it. If Tidus father wasn't sin and someone else was, Spira would have been nuked during Kilika Be for real.
I understand quick hitting penance to death but why not Break HP, BREAK DAMAGE the party as well as use the overdrive like Tidus slice and dice and walked attack reels?
I reached the same spot after 85 hours with Tidus, Yuna and Rikku with all eight stats at 255 (yes, 255 luck on all 3 of them because it looks pretty).
everybody thinking sin is the most intimidating piece of shit out there when your party is all maxed out they can kill sin in a couple of hits but penance could destroy the whole world
Good one Mikagami. Trick in this fight is to keep an eye out on the right counter and not wait for 'bosses' turn with 'both arms'. Always take out one arm and in between get some hits onto his body while also keeping in mind the other hand. Normally I think around 6 times per arm at 99,999. I had HP break limit on the characters and of course carried 99 of those mega potions, 3 stars etc, Took around 40 minutes to beat him. Quick hit is the way to go and instead of Ribbon, add Defense in the last slot.
Cid did one hell of a job creating this masterpiece to be completely indestructible against all odds. Probably, the grandest accomplishment he has ever done in any Final Fantasy game. Praise the Sun!
They're actually really easy if you use the crater exploit. You can force the lightning to strike and then timing the dodges is really easy. I was able to do 223 consecutive in less than an hour total of trying.
Amazing dude, as someone who gave up around Dark Ixion around your upload date because I realized I wouldn't get far without the other Sphere Grid , this was amazing to watch, and it shows you prepared a lot for this battle. Well done
The sphere grid is cake once you complete the arena yeah that takes a while and the don tonberry ap trick. The species and area conquests creations drop spheres and are pretty easy.
Slow and steady gets the Platinum. Thanks for these strats because after getting hit Judgement Day, I wanted to be sure of what I can do. I had no idea I was struck with Armor/Mental break either during that second phase attack either. I just beat him though and it probably took about as long as you did but that's alright because it got me another Platinum for my collection. Again, thanks for showing off how you did it without Zanmato no matter how tedious it was :)
Ingat jaman dulu lawan penance di ps2 berjam2 dan berkali2 hanya sekali saja berhasil mengalahkan setelah itu ga pernah berhasil hingga ps2ku kejual hehe
After applying the UltraNullAll is just better to use Auron as it counters Penance attacks in the second half of the battle so you save some minutes. Boring battle anyway just did it because in my old PS2 I used zanmato to beat it and I felt I had to beat it legitely this time!
I don't see the point in grinding if everyone just gets yojimbo for every fight anyway.. I'd have to waste months of my life to get to penance to then do it in half an hour and be like hmm 250 hours gone 🤷♂️ that's like a months salary I could've been working
we do it for competence and to feel good if i used yojimbo for this fight i would feel like a piece of shit because he was made to be a dificult fight not a 1 minute fight
That describes the whole damn game and series. I get it. You do waste valuable time playing the game but it's for the intellectual stimulation and challenge plus the trophy. FFX is the most time consuming game everyone knows this
255 in evasion and accuracy are not necessary when you have 255 in luck. With 255 luck, you just need at least 170 in agility and 30 in evasion... with those stat, you would have been able to max you HP to 99.999 :) anyway, great fight.
but it is never necessary to have maxed hp. Def +20% works just as well as break hp limit with max defense, and aesthetically, 9999 hp, 999mp and 255 ALL stats looks a lot better than 99999hp, 999mp 255 in some with 170 agility 60 evasion, etc.
***** Nope, agility must be at 255, since it's determining the turns you can take before the enemy's attacking you. What you mean is accuracy and it's not needed with 255 luck, since you'll always hit (critical). And as it has been said, 9.999 HP + Def +20% + Auto-Protect is much better in a physical fight. Since you're wasting your accessory slot with Break HP Limit. Def +20%, Auto-Haste, Ribbon and Auto-Potion is your way to go here. In other words, Break HP Limit and 99.999 HP would mean, getting hit by Mega-Gravitas takes you several turns to replenish your HP (or using Super Elixier and Overdrives cost more turns then Auto-Potion (no turn wasted)) and in the last quarter against Penance you wouldn't stop healing.
Why didn't Yu Yevon send Penance to fight Sin again? Like i know the Final Summoning and all, but really you're gonna save Penance for a bunch of people who killed all your Dark Aeons; also why do you even have Dark Aeons to begin with YEVON, and the people who killed them are also trying to kill sin, but ooooooooooh no, they gotta be stopped so let's send our biggest ultimate daddy big dick weapon PENANCE to annihilate all of them????? I see you Yevon, i see you.
I never made it this far in the game. Honestly I normally can’t even get most characters last weapon. I like this final fantasy but idk the end grind always kill me drive for perfection. Probably the only one I never had a perfect 100% complete game.
I started watching and saw it was it was remastered, so i thought you might have cheated. Then i saw 133 hours and thought "ok, legit". Having all celestials are an achievement on its on. Could never get Onion knight, because of lightning dodging just ruined my life. I liked to blame the game or controller, but it was just be who failed at it.
I think penance is gandofs final aeon. If you look it appears out of gandofs scar of the calm lands and even looks like gandof in a way of you look at his statues at the temple even tho gandof isn’t the faith. I think it’s a final aeon because it’s the there right size and everything plus as I say it appears out of the scar and looks like gandof too.

A boring and tedious boss fight to match the boring and tedious process of getting all the equipment and abilities. You got more resolve than Yuna haha. Great Job though.
I don't know... By this stage the characters have long outlived themselves as fighters with a unique skillset, as developing people with arcs and relationships, and as pieces of a great story. They are mere husks for a mathematical function.
I'm working my way towards this fight, but god damn I've got a lot of work to do. Farm spheres, capture monsters, farm items to make the best armour & then I have to beat Dark Yojimbo like 5 times I believe :(
Chiko Tembo I'm also 27 & I pretty much had to take time out of my life just to properly finish this lol Now it's done & I feel proud, so go for it man :)
