A brief video showing how to use the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer to calculate the date of (Western) Easter.
I mentioned in passing that my desktop calendar shows a full moon on 6 April 2023, but the prayer book's Golden Number for that year appears beside 5 April. I should have shown this passage from the prayer book: "But NOTE, That the Full Moon, for the purposes of these Rules and Tables is the Fourteenth Day of a Lunar Month, reckoned according to an ancient Ecclesiastical computation, and not the real or Astronomical Full Moon."
00:00 Introduction
00:28 The Calendar
00:40 Sunday Letters
01:14 Golden Numbers
02:22 Overview
04:12 The Golden Number for 2023 A.D.
05:06 The Sunday Letter for 2023 A.D.
06:07 Finding Easter 2023 A.D. from the Calendar
07:11 Procedure for years after 2199 A.D.
07:47 The Golden Number for 2222 A.D.
08:14 The Sunday Letter for 2222 A.D.
10:38 The Date for Golden Number 19 in 2222 A.D.

Thank you for posting this - the George VI 1662 BCP I use ends in the 1953 for the Table of Movable Feasts, so I just pencil in the matching year after consulting Google. For 2024 I resolve to calculate it, armed with the knowledge from this video!

Outstanding. Being a spoon-fed Episcopalian, I appreciate knowing how this is calculated. As usual, you have presented difficult information with clarity and patience! Thank you. Honestly... Thank you for everything, I have learned much from your channel.

As always, I never get tired of saying that you are our mediator, because your reviews are always filled with extraordinary teachings and important learnings, I myself am not very good at making calculations, but this review which God inspired left me surprised. May God always inspire you with his knowledge to always leave us instructed.

Thank you very much for that kind comment! I don't consider myself a mediator by any means, and though I thank God for the gifts He has given me, I reserve the words "God inspired" to the Scriptures.

1) Something I've never said: I would like my Prayer Book better if it had more math in it. 2) I love the unbridled optimism the Prayer Book shows in projecting its calculations out into unimaginable future centuries. Let it be so. 3) You may have talked about this before, but: what is the pencil you show in your videos? Pentel Graphgear? 4) Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate this. I always, unsarcastically, wanted to learn this.

Thanks for commenting, Moving About and Manipulating Objects! I heard a radio program yesterday which was first broadcast in 1960: CBS Radio Workshop's "Report on the Weans," set in the year 7956 A.D. I noticed today, after I had made this video, that I could have calculated Easter for that year -- I kind of wish I had chosen 7956 A.D. instead of 2222 A.D. Optimistic is right. Yes, the pencil is a Pentel GraphGear 500 PG523.

Great video! Have you thought about ranking your favourite prayer books?

Once upon a time, I had a '28 Book in which the last date for Easter was in 2012. It made me wonder if the Mayan Calendar folks were onto something.

That _is_ funny, dale. I didn't show it, but my copy has a table listing the Golden Numbers and the date of Easter for every year from 1786 to 2013. Thanks for commenting!

@@RGrantJones So does my current Cambridge edition. I think my old book was from OUP, slightly less optimistic.

Thank you, dear brother. Absolutely fascinating, although maths is not my strong point so I was a bit bamboozled by the end😂... Nevertheless, very interesting to see how pre-Google calculations were made. Personally, I think it might have been easier if we had stuck with God's calendar in Leviticus 23, where both the new year and our 'Easter' would fall on the Passover. Glad to hear some Bible reviews are coming.

Thanks for commenting, Tony! It is sad that Christians have divided over calculations such as these.

I imagine Amish people doing such calculations now. I idealize their simple lifestyle.

Yes. I used a pocket calculator for the long division. Without that, I'm so out of practice that I might have have had to hire a child to do it for me (if they still teach long division in school).
