Heres an easy way to find the actually head gasket thickness on your small block chevy. Plus a swap of head gaskets gained some compression on our L31 budget build. All the little things add up to more power on our quest for cheap HP on our Lt4 hotcam L31 build!
Be sure you have flat and clean head and block surfaces for new head gaskets, especially steel shims and MLS gaskets

I have found that Keith black claimer pistons are .005 taller then stock gm pistons helping compression and they are very affordable for a street engine they work great.

Scat makes a 3.50" stroke crank as well. I would run one over turning a stock crank. Easy way to put the pistons 0.010" higher in the bore.

Just make sure your head and block are the correct finish and true/flat. I have used those same gaskets back in the 90's when they had a black rubberized coating. I still coated the head and deck with a thin coat of aluminum paint which keeps the areas the gasket does not cover from rusting also.

4" head gaskets come/ came down to 16 thou shim. GM, Detroit Gasket [generally genuine GM] and Felpro make them. They were hard to get for a period but I think enough people complained. These are only good for iron heads, but you can reuse them,, or even stack them. Flat tops should be .025 down the hole, 016 gasket+ 041 piston to head. With 2 valve relief pistons and 0=80 angle mill on some fuellies you can get around 11.5-1. Even 64cc chambers are just over 10-1. SBC with decent heads, fuellies etc still make decent power. Though better heads around these days. They also do the shims in 3 7/8 gaskets for 283 307 use. 400 too. And NEVER use 4" gaskets on 3 7/8 bores. You will not keep a headgasket in it. When the sales clown tells you they are not available beat him until he looks! I used these on a 350 road race engine for many years until I went to alloy heads. Though this was 80s and 90s. Last Chev I did was a decade ago and got 020 shim gaskets in Felpro

Don't forget to check the diameter of the fire ring. Most off the shelf headgaskets for a small block measure 4.100 if the standard bore size is 4.00 All that extra clearance means less compression. Now that I watched more of the video I see you took that into account.
@cuttersperformance
@cuttersperformance Год назад
Yes, sir, but as some guys might not know, Always lay your head gasket on your head. Oftentimes, the chamber size will determine how small you can do with the head gasket bore and not the actual cylinder bore size. You dont want the gasket encroaching into the combustion chamber
@KCDW83
@KCDW83 Год назад
@@cuttersperformance True. I didn't think about that. I deal with sbf with windsor style heads so that's never really an issue. Just something to consider if you are going all out. Get gaskets made that are .010 over you're final bore diameter so you have .005 clearance and help get as much compression as you can.
@cuttersperformance
@cuttersperformance Год назад
@KCDW83 you really gotta watch with aftermarket heads with bigger valves. I did a tear down on a SBC a few years back that had a weird issue with pre ignition/detonation and turns out the wrong MLS head gasket was used with the AFR heads it was sitting into the chamber slightly even though it was .060 bigger than the cylinder bore. The mls gasket was causing the hot spot and causing all the problems. It was pretty wild, but luckily, it was a cheap fix for him before any real damage occurred.

Make sure your surfaces are flat and clean as shim gaskets are obviously not as forgiving. Pistons must be .020"+ in the hole, or you won't have enough piston to head clearance with shim gasket. Spray the gasket with high tack if it's bare, if its factory coated, leave it alone.

I’m curious on how the lt4 with the .525 lift is outside of the .040 clearance you prefer with the vortec head mods when it’s only .550 with the setup you are talking about. I’m sure I’m missing something and I’m not being a smart a either. I have a setup I’m wanting to try with about the same numbers. This gives me hope it’ll work.

@robertheymann5906 Год назад
Head gasket bore diameter is also a factor, you only need about. 010 bigger than the bore, just enough to provide clearance
@michaelhancock1603
@michaelhancock1603 Год назад
Quick question regarding the gasket bore diameter. Why is it necessary to oversize the gasket bore if the piston isn't zero decked? I hadn't even considered that prior to this video!
@cuttersperformance
@cuttersperformance Год назад
The bore size needs to be slightly bigger than the bore, actually slightly bigger than the small chamfer thats at the top of the cylinder bore. But the big thing you need to watch/check is the combustion chamber size on the cylinder head. If you lay the gasket on the cylider head, it must be bigger than the combustion chamber and can not protrude into the chamber in any spot. Alot of guys try to get the smallest bore diameter for the cylinder bore and end up having pre-ignition issues becuase of the gasket is protruding in the combustion chamber causing a hot spot. For a 4.000 to 4.030 bore a normal head gasket bore size would be aroubd 4.100 to 4.200. The bore diameter does not affect the compression ratio nearly as much as thickness does.

@piss-cutterperformance Agreed. Giving carbon a place to attach to and act like a match ready to be lit :(
@robertheymann5906
@robertheymann5906 Год назад
@michaelhancock1603 Crevice losses It's dead space in the combustion chamber where gasses don't burn completely. We want our chamber to be without cracks and crevices. The distance down to the top ring is another area although not easily modified since it's part of piston design, manufacturers have moved the top ring up higher close to the piston crown to reduce this crevice over the years. Swirl and or tumble inside the chamber isn't as affected if we tighten up the crevices and in a wedge design our quench area is more efficient with a tight gasket bore.

Sooooo... I've got a question for you and since I cant message you directly, I'll ask you here. I have a nice little 350 build with a static 9.98 to 1 compression and dynamic of 8.35 to 1 compression (.042" quench area and aluminum heads). Here in Tennessee, the average "premium" fuel is 91 octane which should work just fine with my combo at 35 - 36 degrees of total timing. Question is, how can I use 87 octane for normal cruising? Simply reduce total timing? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jim
@cuttersperformance
@cuttersperformance Год назад
Theres a bunch of factors that kinda determine fuel sensitivity. What's the vehicle this engines going into? Rear gearing? A lighter vehicle with high gearing is going to be much easier to tune to run on 87 octane than a heavy vehicle with low gearing. You have a good quench and aluminum heads, which helps a lot. Plus, keeping the coolant temp around 180 will certainly help. A timing curve that ramps in abit later will help the situation and not gave to totally pull back total timing, and an adjustable vac advance hooked to full vacuum, bringing in an extra 8 to 10 deg of advance during cruise/idle will help drivability. Let me know abit more about your engine/vehicle combo for timing recommendations as a starting point
