EPISODE 84.
At long last all the bronze hanging knees, lodging knees, breasthooks and floors are fastened into the boat! In this video we show the final parts of the process, including some welding of the most unusually shaped knees. We also do some more preparation for planking - planing more of the huge boards and finishing the line-out. In other news, Backtrack gets some slick threads, and Pancho shows a hint of halloween evil…

Leo, I don't know if you realize it but you are quite literally making a historical record of your venture. This series is a documentation of a early 21st century interpretation of late-nineteenth-century craftsmanship and it is done at its finest. Your attention to detail as well as taking the time to create hundreds of hours of video will live on long after we have passed away. I am proud to say that I was here to watch it in real time. Keep up the great work.

An interesting progression for Pete, who has gone from a "I wish you would leave me alone" semi novice (on camera) to a fairly confident, and competent instructor/teacher on the things he works on and their significance to the integrity of the "boat". Everyone improves as the build progresses, to Leo's credit. Shaping future craftsmen while insisting on "only the best" of their efforts ensures the craft (both TALLY HO and ship building) will survive the current version of "good enough for government work". I know nothing about building a boat ,except for what I have learned here, and here I have learned that the only way to do things is to do things right. Carry on. Thank you.

To me, Pete has always come across as extremely productive and competent. The transformation I have seen is that he is more willing to talk to the camera and explain what he is doing (which is good for us, since most of us don't know anything about building boats by traditional methods). Not sure if that is what you are saying or not, and not trying to say my take is more accurate than yours.

I’ve just been made aware that there were a lot of RU-vid ads throughout this video! Sorry about that - it’s RU-vid’s default setting for an uploaded video and I normally turn it off straight away, but I forgot to this morning! I’ve turned them off now. edit: Thanks, I know you guys don't mind the odd ad. But apparently it was showing ads every two minutes...! I prefer the video to run uninterrupted once it has started.

Leo, my brother (if I may take such liberties), listen up: your very heart-felt thanks to all your supporters, I'm sure, were gratefully accepted by your supporters. But I've gotta say that I'm sure they wouldn't toss a buck or two your way if it wasn't for your brilliant dedication and skillful execution of all you do on this really quite daunting project. Further, we all know you've sunk insane amounts of your own money in this (and we all know you're totally tapped-out of your own funds.) That said, full disclosure: I'm retired, fixed income (fixed very low), so can't contribute a nickel... BUT... I eagerly await each new video and hit the LIKE button before it even starts. (For the life of me, can't comprehend why there are any DISLIKES, guess I'll never get that). The up-shot of what I'm trying to say is: You've built a project, a team and a following like no other. This is fascinating to watch and vicariously be a part of. The human spirit dwells in unexpected places-- and often gives the world a glimpse of the better side of humanity. This is one of those glimpses. I'm happy to be a molecular part of Tally Ho!, as I'm sure everyone who follows these videos is. I thank YOU, Leo, for bringing this to all of us.

According to his website, he's not looking for volunteers, however that may change as the build continues. While I'm sure the work is rewarding, but it likely isn't a walk in the park and does take a good level of commitment (minimum 6 weeks, 9am to 6pm - 6 days/week). He also mentions a 1-week "no pressure" period where either party can walk away with no hard feelings... I interpret this to mean he's gotten some volunteers in the past that aren't up to level of work that's expected.

Just a tip from a boilermaker for using a heating tip at Pete is at 3.29, your not turning the oxygen on far enough giving you a much cooler carburising flame, you're after a neutral flame (perfect acetylene to oxygen ratio, neither oxidising or carburising), turn the oxygen up until the flame just starts to come back onto the tip, you should see a small "inner" flame coming from each hole of the heating tip rather then it all melding into one like what you have there, you'll get a hotter flame (3-500 degrees celsius hotter) allowing you to turn it down a bit saving gas, or heat faster with the same amount of acetylene. Fun fact though in case it might be useful as some point, you can heat low carbon (mild) steel with a carburising flame to slightly case harden the outside of the steel, there are better ways to do this then with a torch (see this video by chris over at clickspring on how to case harden with a small furnace ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V_Mp1fNzIT8.html&ab_channel=Clickspring)

When we used to plane wide 8/4-12quarter live edge slabs we built a custom cart w/ inflated tires to accept the slab as it came out of the surfacer then just wheel it around and make another pass. Will support the long material well and can actually become quicker. Also, I've noticed the planer will give a smother finish. Depending on the material and how the cart is designed, it can become a 1 person job. I love the content and only perpetuating about this idea bc I've 2 manned big boards a lot and once we got the cart I couldn't believe how instantly it became effortless...safer, faster, more enjoyable. "Let Love Guide You, Not Fear" is paramount in these times and becomes the solution to all that hinders our full potential.

Hey Leo. Love what you are doing! Been following you for a while now. I don't know why but if you are ever looking for some research or whatever in maritime history just give me a holler. I'm a archaeologist an coordinator at the Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums. Keep up the good work and next time I want to see Poncho help with the planking ;-)

Just a handy tip from a pile buck. When you use the torch try using the bench or table to lean on. It's all in the wrists. Also try angling in to the cut. Hope that helps. Love your videos!

Whoa! what snappy entrance music! woke me right up.. I do dig the music you put on your videos.. You left out the thanks to your self Leo.. For taking the time to share your dream with us.. We are all dreamers Leo.. (some more than others) and a lot of us thrive on dreams.. and when we can participate in someones dream and help to make it possible it reinforces in us that dreams are not just wishes.. But that they can come true.. even ours..With hard work and perseverance and (as Ringo Starr said) with a little help from our friends! So thank you Leo for letting us share in your impossible dream come true.. You do more for us than you realize.. Carry on son.. remember it's the third star on the left and on till morning!

It's great that you are using top quality all natural ingredients: Wood, Bronze, Copper, and Lead. No cardboard, no cardboard derivatives, no cellotape. Only a little bit of string. I think the front will not fall off. Very rigorous maritime engineering standards indeed.

Delicious irony that seeing all this wonderful work on Tally Ho makes me go weak at the knees... Which is precisely what Tally Ho won't be. Incidentally, the term 'breast hook' also makes me feel quite faint. Breast hooks were a medieval instrument of torture used to rip the - Well, they were used on women. Oh, dear. I think I need a cup of tea. And a few biscuits. Any excuse, eh? ;-)
