Keep in mind this is a forklift mechanic stating this.....25 years ago when I helped do some home builds, the corners of the rooms had 2 2x4's making an 'L' shape and then when a wall intersected in the middle of another wall we did a 'C' created by 3 2x4's. That way you have plenty of meat to nail the 2 walls together. Keep up the good work!

It’s just drywall, when you start tearing Walls apart working in construction you realize most people don’t even bother, the drywall is fairly stiff and it’s not really a problem. Either way you do it will be more than fine. You could even just use some thin plywood. You will be much better off putting that money towards drywall screws instead of using nails or at least getting good ring shaft nails so you don’t have to deal with pop outs.
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 года назад
I'm already using ring shank nails and scrap wood. So this is definitely saving me money.
@ShaneZettelmier
@ShaneZettelmier 3 года назад
@@TKCL yeah, every way you talked about doing it would work great so I would do it’s cheapest. I’ve torn apart dozens of walls that had nothing there and we’re fine after years.

This might be a dumb question but, do you have to do blocking for the interior walls too?
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 года назад
I don't see anywhere that you do. Apparently it's common practice to sheetrock on 16 inch centers with no blocking
@mike93lx
@mike93lx 3 года назад
A single 2x6 can give you enough backing to cover both sides of a wall. That would be one inch on each side... Plenty of backing
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 года назад
Glad to hear that! I've don't that throughout most of the house. It's hard to toss $17 dollar 2x6s when they can be used for something like this.
@mike93lx
@mike93lx 3 года назад
@@TKCL I hear you on that. Make ever bit count! I'm planning to build the same model tornado shelter that you did (looking for build videos of those plans is what caused me to find your channel) and even sizing it down to 6x8 has the lumber at 2500,plus plywood, anchors, nails, steel, etc. Feels like I need to budget over 4k right now
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 года назад
Sadly that was an affordable shelter compared to concrete and steel shelters before the lumber increase. I'd strongly recommend building it the size we did, after 6 inch walls it shrinks quickly. Now if you are using it for tornados and quick uses, that shouldn't matter. All night through a hurricane like us, I like the size and being able to fit a futon.
@mike93lx
@mike93lx 3 года назад
@@TKCL its just for tornadoes and I want it in my garage, so its very fast to access, so space is limited. I figure that the 35sq ft will be plenty for 2 adults and 2 kids for the 15-30 min of a warning. If we needed to hunker down for a hurricane like you do, it would definitely be a different story
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 года назад
I understand that! It should be plenty for that circumstance and cheaper than my build being in a garage.
