How do you even get it separated in the first place? I cant find any kind of groove

Hold the base down and use a screwdriver at the battery end. Then tilt Controller down in the opposite direction and it will force the base to pop. Unfortunately the controller is glued together. So it won't snap back into place as readily as before.
