As for this video:
I just had the knife for a few hours and was so impressed by it that I decided to make a short 6-7 minute long video!

I appreciate the pragmatic nature of this conversation regarding knives that are actually used.
@SpartanJohns

Thanks! I like all knives but i appreciate inexpensive knives which can do a good job with slight modifications or out of the box. I think those are the kind of knives which most people look for.

Have has this model for a year or two and it's one of my favourite EDCs. It's really smooth with the ball bearings, great heat treat, comfortable. I have more expensive knives but this usually finds its way into the pocket.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 года назад
I get it! I also have more expensive knives but i feel like it is really amazing when a 15$ knife can feel like a 50$ knife. I reduced the edge angle and put a deep carry pocket clip on it. Now I actually see carrying this as an edc mainly because it "hides" pretty well in the pocket.
@Kraakesolv

@@SpartanJohns I should try 15 degrees as well I think. Your video here convinced me to try it! The deep carry clip though, where did you get it if I may ask?
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 года назад
In the video this one had a large edge angle. About 30-35 dps. A few days ago I put 16 DPS on it. It did well so far, today I plan on taking it out and seeing how it does in wood. I got a few deep carry pocket clips from china. Like you see on the bugout but these are a bit different. Not as good as the original bugout pocket clip. However for this model, it being smaller, you have to modify the pocket clip a bit. Drill(widen) the holes. I did that and even so it is a "tight" fit. Not 100% perfect because I had to force the screws in a bit in an angle.

Hi Denis. I definitely have been missing out on your great videos , I'm so glad to have rediscovered your channel. I used to get the Ganzos , Sanrenmus and Y Starts shipped for free from China from Gear best price ranging from $10 - $20 what a deal. I gifted over 20 Ganzo , Sanrenmu and Y Starts. I only have three left 2 Y Start Jin01 and one Jin02 , great knives I paid $11 for the Jin02s and $13 for the Jin02 , those prices are long gone now . I remember watching your videos on the Ganzo 720 and after I bought several of those , thanks. Back then one of the people I gifted a 720 too bought this full size rat 1 clone with the g lock I never got one myself , but I really liked it. I mostly buy exclusively Cold Steels now. The other day we were discussing the CS Code 4 and the CS Bushranger , although I love both I would not recommend them to everyone. I think you would love them but would be better off with something other. The Code 4 was a great edc and I only had a problem with the smooth metal scales when it was bitter cold , under 32 degrees Fahrenheit ( 0 degrees Celsius ) with cold hands I found it slippery. The Bushranger is awesome but the lock spring is strong , I didn't have a problem and it's very unlikely you would either but with the strong lock spring and the thumb plate it's more difficult to thumb flick open but the wave deployment straight out the pocket works well except for the CS pocket clips being very strong / tight. The other difficulty with the Bushranger is the one hand triad lock closing , there isn't alot of room behind the riccaso for error and with the strong lock spring it increases the danger of finger guillotine. I have well above average strong hands and even though this was not a severe issue I didn't enjoy using it as much because. I made sure the friend I gifted them to was able and well aware. I don't know you well but I suggest forget about the Code 4 but still consider the Bushranger with your increase in cost and tariffs. I may get another in the future again if the prices are right. Today I'm revisiting the CS Pro lite clip point. I hope your having a great weekend on the other side of the world. Thanks again for the great info and entertainment. Thanks your friend Jim.

Hey Jim! I thought I was the one writing "novels" in the comment section! :)) I enjoyed reading it. The 720 Is a beast! If one lowers the edge angle to 17-20 dps it becomes very useful. I still have the one I tested and a one which I didn't abuse as much. The Rat 1 design copy(G727) is also ok. But I found the RAT1 had a more comfortable handle. I like most of their "reinterpretations" but the 727...wasn't the best. Not that it was bad in any way...they could have made the handle a bit longer. I had 3! Gifted 2 away and a friend lost the 3rd. Now...i just ordered another one. Concerning Cold Steel. I have the American Lawman which has a very stiff backspring. Hard to unlock it. But I always looked at that as a benefit. It's not a toy because you can't really play with it(open/close) for too long. It does give me that "extra sense of security". As for the Code4 and how slick it feels in cold weather. I know that feeling. Especially when it is cold and dry! I have a few which do that. It would be more a curiosity than anything else. The Bushranger...that would be more of "in know I want to work wood with it" knife. One of the best CS i got lately was the Air Lite. Grind is thick, i like how the AUS10A can handle rougher jobs and it is very thin/light in the pocket. I used it when I renovated parts of the apartment. Cut thru some old steel wires, drywall...and yes, it got chips but it held up very well. The 727s.....this one was more a curiosity...a "lets' see how it is" knife...but it ended up surprising me. I dropped the edge angle to about 16 dps...put a deep carry pocket clip on it and can't wait to test it. Sunny out now...and I am getting ready to go for a hike and maybe I get a few hours of just sitting and cutting wood. Thank you! I hope you get a nice day and manage to make the best of it! Denis

Like many, I own a few Ganzo models, and this is probably my favorite every day carry. The Rat design is classic and, in my opinion, this is an improvement over the already great Rat 2. It certainly is the knife that meets my needs. Love the Ganzo's G-lock!
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 года назад
I bought the RAT2...just to test against the 727S...and you know what? I think the 727S is better! A hint bigger and way more comfortable for small and bigger tasks. But how to say that in a video without having to delete 5-10 comments afterwards where people, for some reason, take it personal? That we will find out in the near future..when I get some time to make that video

I have several Ganzo/Firebird models, and they have all impressed me with their quality and ruggedness. I think their reimagining of the 940 Osborne is superior to the original!
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 года назад
I like the 940 as is. the size, the weight, the shape of the aluminium handle scales....I do have a few G756(the design copy of the 940) and I like it. That one actually convinced me to get the 940. For work I like them a lot. Bigger, so it feels better in hand for the times you have to do some cutting for a longer time. And I have to be honest, i like the fact that it is 440C since I think it is easily maintained. I put deep carry pocket clips on a lot of ganzo knives. this is why I carried them so much. I think it is always nice to have "that second work knife" with you. In case there is something to cut which you know will damage the blade or if someone else needs a knife and you know how that goes...they might loose it, chip the edge, aso...

EDIT: I am sorry, I posted the below before watching your vid till the very end... I was too excited when i saw the Chap...😄so you talked about it indeed anyway!! Previous post: Hey Dennis, as always: Glad you´re back after one of your "usual" breaks... 😉 ... Excuse me, if I go off topic, but: I can see the Spyderco Chaparral on your table and I´d really like to see you do an review on that one!! I am really impressed with the Chaparral: Why? - The thin, just 2mm ffg blade has taught me, that thicker stock really is not necessary in such a small folder. 2mm slices so well, and I´ve tested the blade very hard (twisted it in hard woood and so on): No problem! - The Chap backlock is amazing: Rock solid due to the internal stop pin - The whole knife is built like a tank: Steel all around (liners, backspacer, lockbar) - And: For me it has great ergos for being such a thin carry! I actually came to call it my "little bush craft claw", not kidding! If I bring a fixed blade as my main knife, the Chap is a great performing companion for smaller slicing tasks, feathersticks, minor foodprep. Dennis, I´d love to hear or perhaps WATCH your thoughts on the Chaparral...any chance I will?
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 года назад
I had a Chapparal Sun and Moon with me for a short period of time last Sept. Why did I want to test this knife? Because of the thin stock, to see Spyderco's HT of CTS XHP, and because it is so small...and for edc tasks...i imagined it would be all one can need. What surprised me was how solid it felt in hand. The shape and also the backlock. I explain that in the video. I have a video filmed, about the Sun and Moon version. Now that I have the LW i reduced the edge angle to 15-16 dps..It is a heck of a slicer. The only think I do not like(although it does not affect how the knife works that much) is the asimetrical grind. Like I said...the video is filmed and uploaded but still unlisted. Check it out if you like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jX_26rxjU5o.html Now I am not sure if in working with the LW some things might change....and I don't really know what I said in that video...I rarely watch my own videos...maybe after I'll make a video about the LW i will watch the Sun And Moon video

on the Chaparral: I think the backlock on this one is that good and rock solid due to the internal stop pin, not (only) due to being it so small...

@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 года назад
Thanks! I appreaciate that! Changes to my edc....well...yes! But since I work from home I don't really carry the same knife around so much as I used to. I still have a few which i keep coming back to. I do manage to get 5-10 minute breaks in the day where I sharpen/cut. But the folders are really random. Whenever I go out i will take: Wallet(leather), phone, folder, keys...but I do tend to carry less stuff simply because I test more at home whenever i get those 5-10 minutes.. I tend to carry my knives inside the pocket nowadays, not clipped to my pocket like i used to. Mostly to avoid questions from people who don't know me and my passions.

@@SpartanJohns nice response I’m the same way in terms of wallet flashlight and knife but usually carry two for work. Also I just got the range boss off your review and that’s a nice knife for the money. Cold steel triad lock is very strong for the price. I know they got bought out by another company but they seem to have nice products

I have the bugout and the mini as well. Plus 2 bugout clones. A long time ago i filmed a video about the bugout. I'll see how/if i can find the time and try to do that. Might be just a "indoor video" in which case it might end up just on my patreon. I didn't like the idea of the bugout at first...but then as I kept using it and carrying it....I 'kinda understood' it. now i have an 'interesting' view on it. so yeah..like i said, if i find the time i will make a video on it

I first came across the Ontario Rat models 1 and 2 in D2 and was interested in picking them up. However, in the UK, they retail at £53 and £59 respectively. I then found the Ganzo 727 S and M models, both in 440C but both retail at £25. I don't expect they will be 100% of the knife they copy, but they will certainly be more than 50% of the knife. Some makes are just too expensive for what they are, and where they are made these days.
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns Год назад
IMO...the G727 is not as good as the RAT1. Because it has a shorter handle. The RAT1's handle is much more comfortable. But the 440C and the Axis Lock mechanism are truly nice. The G727s Is nicer than the RAT2. A slightly bigger(more comfortable) handle, more cutting edge length, runs on caged ball bearings. But the Blade to handle ratio is not thought out well...as in: the knife moves really nice and if you close the knife via the axis lock with the butt of the knife resting in your palm you will nick your palm with the tip of the blade. That Is what i have to mention about them. As for the ganzo's not being as good as the RAT 1&2...I think they are even a bit better...it all depends on personal preference.

What is the best Ganzo to get?
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 года назад
Well....that really depends on what you like to carry and how you like to use knives, how big your hands are.... If you don't want to mess around with axis locks(honestly i never had spring break on me so far) i would opt for their FH series. The FH41 is a "soft looking" folder with a relatively thin grind and good overall feeling in hand. But it's D2. I like it, some don't If you know you'd like something with an axis lock, in 440C which is easier to sharpen, more stainless than D2, then you can opt between the full size models or their smaller ones. Personally, the one I like best and here I am sure it is just me, their 745 model. It is a design copy of the Benchmade HK Axis. I worked a lot with that one. It has a weird, 'aggressive' shape, but, and maybe it is because I abused mine so much and still worked with it AND it did a good job, I really like it. The one I made a video on, i still have and still use. In addition to that one i have gotten 2 more. It basically comes down to what you like...there is no "1 best model". If you have smaller hands, or just like their smaller models...out of the ones i have the 727s is very comfortable.

@@SpartanJohns I will let you know. The only Gozos I have are the G7531 and the delica looking one. The lock on the G7531 is not verry smooth, but the grind on both Ganzos I have is what impresses me most. For such a cheap knife, it is ground quite nicely and verry thin behind the edge(which makes sharpening easier for me).
@SpartanJohns
@SpartanJohns 2 года назад
the 753 has a wide blade and mine also has a nice grind. I worked with it 'out of the box' clearing a small hillside of roots. the downside to mine is the CF handle scales....they are too slick for my taste. Sharpening, as you said, was easy, even if hit a few rocks so it had a few dents and chips.
