The other night here in Florida, millions of hopeful people tuned into the drawing of the Mega Millions Lotto, estimated at over $500 million dollars. Although I do not play the Lotto or gamble at all, a group of our friends convinced us to buy five tickets that went into a pool, so if any of us hit the "big one" the money would be split evenly among the participants.
Although I rolled my eyes at the cashier as I handed her my twenty dollar bill and asked for "five quick picks," in all honesty it was hard not to be a little excited at the possibility. That just MAYBE one of our numbers would come up, and overnight I would be many, many, many millions dollars richer. What would I do with all that money?
Well, yes, a private yacht tour around the Mediterranean was on the menu, and maybe a swimming pool. But what I really fantasized about was what all that money could do for all the cats in my community. As the time for the drawing approached, I fantasized about my own self-funded cat shelter, complete with multiple veterinarians and staff, a modern, light-filled building with plenty of space, with a central sky-light lit atrium for the cats in residence. There would be a fleet of fully-equipped buses that would serve as pop-up spay/neuter and vaccine location to be dispatched all over the central Florida area. No charge. Every cat or kitten that needed a place to stay would have one.
I also thought about how, with that absurd amount of money, I could start a free boarding facility for people in domestic violence situations who need to escape a dangerous situation but have no safe place to board their cats. The kitties could stay - for free - and be taken care of until the owner was on his or her feet again. And boy, all that money could really help people who needed vet care for their pets but didn't have the cash to pay for it. I could see a well-stocked cat food pantry filled to the ceiling with bags and cans of food, there for anyone who needed it.
Well, reader, I did not win the Lotto. But that doesn't mean that my dreams to help cats, and the people who love them, can't come true. Even small things can make a huge difference: taking the time to spay and neuter your pets, or help a neighbor get theirs fixed if they are unable. Donating a little money or time to your local shelter. Choosing not to turn away when things seem too difficult, or too sad, to contemplate. Saying to yourself, "I'm going to help, even in this small way," and actually doing it.
See, those hundreds of millions of dollars sitting in that 'Mega Millions' Lotto cache didn't materialize all at once. It grew dollar by dollar, a mass acclimation by individuals, each with the shared dream of winning all that unimaginable wealth. People of every age and walk of life, pushing their hard-earned money across gas station counters everywhere in exchange for the fantasy that it might, with the cosmic spin of plastic balls, transform their lives forever.
One small act at a time, each person doing what they can. We can do the same thing as that Lotto, compounding our shared efforts to make the world a better place for both animals and people. And in this Lotto, everyone wins.
