Even in the face of precision guided missiles, tanks have continued to dominate the battlefield. Todays battle tanks are high-technology war machines, with everything from depleted-uranium armor to computer-aimed guns. Take a look at today's most potent main battle tanks from around the world: the sleek American M1 Abrams, the British Challenger, the French Leclerc, and the German Leopard 2.
In this documentary, part of the Firepower video series that aired on the Discovery Channel, design experts talk about their newest designs for battle tanks.

@OlderG0ds It rates. Gunner has thermal sights, stabilised gun, fire controls with lead-computing and target tracking. Commander has thermal sights on a small CRT screen (cheap and works). PNK-4CR rig on his traversable cupola allowing to override the gunner, independant thermal imaging and wield the AA machine gun buttoned-up. Shtora APS gives imunity to ATGMs, and detect foe laser rangefinding. Driver operates an EMP generator to destroy magnetic mines in the front. This is standard T-90

I still have this documentary purchased in VHS format back in 90's, I never thought it was a Discovery show. For those who ask about the T90, well, IMHO, at that time american cable tv documentaries were very biased.

look at 2:06 and see how the gun barrel is kept still while the tank is bumping like crazy. amazing machine

the Leclerc uses diesel engine, rolls as fast as the M1, and is a very modern machine, enough said.

@mba2ceo A tank is a mobile gun platform, which can go faster to a location than infantry. It is designed to destroy other heavy vehicles. Airforce - pummel Armour - punch through Infantry - hold and occupy Everything is connected until universal vehicles are developed. There are none in sight, yet.

Modern Russian tanks have not been in many engagements with the exception of that colossal fuckup in Chechnya (which is not the fault of the T80s or the crews, but rather the stupid idea to send them unsupported into a hostile city). While the Abrams and challenger 2 have been in battles that rank among the largest in history.

@EliteGhost001 "In 1969 the project (MBT-70) was well over budget and the Germans withdrew from the effort, developing a new main battle tank on their own instead. In the US the development continued for a short time, until in 1971 the Congress cancelled the programme. The MBT-70 is the "grandfather" of the Leopard 2 and the M1 Abrams, the current main battle tanks of both countries." There you go, Germans pulled out first.

@OlderG0ds you'd be amazed how full of tech the T-90 is. But this program is made by the USA. The US thinks its M1 is so amazing while they didn't even came up with the entire design. They took what's left from their cooperation with Germany to create a futuristic tank and then they made that into the M1. Only to be stunned by it fuel hunger. Later it even adopted the Leopard's gun. And it was Russia who came up with gun stabalisation. I might not be a fan of the US.. but I do love tanks :)
@ThePerfectRed

Actually the Abrahms uses a German gun in license. Originally the USA had mounted a conventional 105mm rifled gun when they decided they needed something better.

@OlderG0ds I would say that the Bazooka was the pinnacle reason in making close quarters tank assaults possible rendering the Tiger I obsolete for town eradication.
@Twiggy163
@Twiggy163 13 лет назад
@OlderG0ds source: wikipedia Congress canceled the MBT-70 (replecement for the M60, in cooperation with Germany) in November and XM803 December 1971, and redistributed the funds to the new XM815 later renamed the XM1 Abrams after General Creighton Abrams. There you go, the US pulled out.

In the A6 variant, the German Leopard is world's best MBT. Cheaper, also in fuel consumption, than the M1 and more widely used than the Challenger, a very good MBT but only used by the British Army.

@mba2ceo While Shoulder fired weapons like the RPG-29 Vampire and FGM-148 Javelin have been developed and indeed have been used with great effect on modern tanks, new systems have already been developed and deployed by armies like Israel and Russia that can effectively knock them out of the sky. Also, ERA has been so fine tuned by now that it can defeat tandem shaped warheads. Tanks are also increasely difficult to hit, with new technologies to allow them to literally disappear into the land-
@Twiggy163
@Twiggy163 13 лет назад
@OlderG0ds No not to actualy fire xD but if the target was further away it either needed to stop to increase it accuracy or the gunner needed to be an unbelevable good one. As far as I've read, it was the US that cancelled their contract with Germany and started working on their own battle tank.

i think that ALL tanks should have side skirting...not only is it protecting the tank.....take it off and it looks like a tank from the 70's, that goes for the M1 aswell

@mba2ceo there's a reason tanks are still being made today and it isn't because they are obsolete

You are the one who is being stubborn. The pressure produced is higher, however with the M829A2 and beyond, the pressure within the L44 gun tube has already reached near maximum allowed. With the addition of the L55, the US Army found that it caused problems. And FYI, Germany does NOT have M829 ammunition.

@mba2ceo Tanks have their place on the battlefield, Nothing gets you moving like the presence of an enemy tank in the vicinity , 100s of them coming at you and you won't be able to run fast enough with a turd in each sock!!!
@TimOvrlrd

@mba2ceo scape. Also, Tanks are becoming increasingly self-sufficient, meaning that they don't need infantry or air support as much anymore. Some tanks have and are designed to shoot down helicopters and other aircraft. Tanks versatility makes them indespensible on the modern battlefield. Even IFV like the Bradley are incredibly useful in practically any scenario, including unconventional warfare. In desert storm, the only two M1 Abrams destroyed by enemy fire were hit by other tanks and

I doubt that Chieftain was a most heavily armored tank of that time. The T-64 with composit armor aleady existed. Their RHA equivalent was about 350 mm.

@Bjjownsu10 1. Planes are best at discrete engagement. 2. Sherman would have done the same thing. 3. If there was a RPG that Abrams would be a $7 million pill of derby. What U have stated gives perfect explanation about the failure in AFGHANISTAN. 4. Abrams = 9,000 units * $7 Million = $ 63 Billion wasted stolen * Just because something can accomplish something does NOT justify its existence due to inefficiency. Today's theater requires WW2 equipment - P-51s and Shermans.

@HubertWolfen true, I always tend to focus on the factual part, the phrases they use like 'this machine saved a lot of lives' are extremely painful to hear though... especially since the wars they were involved in were corporate wars.

Don't forget that the Abrams and soon the Challenger work with German 120 mm guns from Rheinmetall. Germany's technology remains best. And after compulsory military service ended in 2011 there's a professional army again handling those tanks. But me as a German will never be proud of those killing-machines...

@kolinmartz The Merkava Mk.IV has some massive problems with the armor. A single RPG can pierce thru the back side infantry door. The Israelis tryed to combine a troop transporter and a mbt and they didnt think the design thru.

@NathanDawson94 13 лет назад
@HubertWolfen NO! Here, I think this is a documentary, where I learn about tanks. In order for it to be "U.S war propaganda", it should ONLY talk about how great the M1 Abrams. Also, it talks about the Challenger, which is a British tank and it says "the latest main battle tank produced by the pioneers of tank design..." It can't be propaganda since it says that, which backfires on the effort to make U.S war propaganda. It is the total opposite!

The Challenger 2 is nice, but its low production numbers and the problems with its rifled gun, it's also very expensive. M1A2's draw back is its expensive and its gas turbine engine uses a lot of fuel and has proven to be unreliable in sandy conditions. As far as the T-90 is concerned, we might as well admit that all Russian weapons are superior to western weapons. *Sarcasm.*
@mba2ceo
@mba2ceo 13 лет назад
@RyanRyzzo TANKS are actually a hindrance in the field. I would never want tank complements in my division. Tanks cannot defend themselves against aerial assaults or well equipment infantry. They are completely obsolete since WW2. Nazi learned that the hard way. Like battleships were in the Pacific in 1943. Like carriers are in 2011. Why do U think USSR has only one Admiral Kuznetsov class aircraft carrier but hundreds of Subs ?
