Even in the face of precision guided missiles, tanks have continued to dominate the battlefield. Todays battle tanks are high-technology war machines, with everything from depleted-uranium armor to computer-aimed guns. Take a look at today's most potent main battle tanks from around the world: the sleek American M1 Abrams, the British Challenger, the French Leclerc, and the German Leopard 2.

HESH is the "High Explosive Squash Head" round... used to make the inner linings of the tank shatter... at give everyone inside a sort of "problem" when the splinters find the ammo compartment :P

Yes the CR2 uses a fin stabilized round called CHARM 3 (CHallenger ARMament 3.. "3" being the designation for the round) the rifling in the barrel means that, with the APFSDS rounds, it is the most accurate tank on the planet today Challenger ONE scored the world record for longest tank-to-tank kill in the gulf war, back in the 90's Hope this helped :)

Rifled guns spin the rounds which increase accuracy, makes it go straight. But these days they have fin stabilized rounds so there's no need for the rifling.

...outclassed the original rifled gun with its uranium shells. BAE aquired the license from Rheinmetall and are now tweaking it to their own needs. Expect the challenger being to receive Upgrade in the near future.

Ty for the answer Older. Does that means that the British challenger II dont use fin stabilized rounds? Also, can challenger II can fire canister shells or it would damage the riffling of its gun?

Rifled guns don`t have reach the kinetic energy a smooth bore pentdant might reach. High kinetic energy is a big concern when it comes to armor penetration, so they made up for the lower kinetic power by using depleted uranium against armored targets. This is problematical for political and health aspects for obvious reasons, so they started an evaluation program in 2004 by fitting the german l55 smoothbore gun to a challenger. The tests showed that the l55 with a dm53 penetrator round...

hmm if an AT gun hits the ifrared scaners and the sensors the tank is basicly usless, beside i wonder what woud they do if all the electronics failed ? ,,, is there a manual option ? ..+ good luck with all the options on the screen :D ... jesus crist what more would a man need in a hot battle than just locate enemy and fire 2 things , like the dudes going to start pushing the screen like crazzy going threw all the options :] .... i dont know if all that technology and electronics would be good

The French Leclerc is a good tank, but remember folks.. the tool is only as good as its crew! LOL Beside Leclare was a wimp and ran to England after the German invasion, then drops in after D-Day and the break out of Normandy which was lead by British and American troops to beat a dead German horse and declare power and victory for France... He was a joke.

Challenger 2 uses HESH rounds, and they also can fire something like 50 different types of ammo. Canisters, smoke, white phosphorous, all that. I don't think firing those wear the gun out any faster than a normal round.

@ShinigamixXXx Well, Mark I was the first tank used in combat, depending on your definition of tank. First modern type tank with a turret and gun that could move around was French Renault FT17.

first up, the nazi kick the frenchy butts, and the yankees freed france, for the most part, the french are not known to be major azz kickers, so honestly, they are good at whipping up a problem for the rest of the world. then playing chicken, the special opps is a differant story, and the auto loader originally came for the t-72 russian tank, which sucks anyway, just saying
